Risen, out 2 October!

Couple of points to note:

Sound is amazing in the game, get into a fight and you can hear your oppoenent breath becoming labured and heavy, very much adds to atmosphere and tension.

Secondly, on the official forums someone has posted abut being able to force 1st person perspective via the command console.

Game seems very good so far, very very tough, but worthwhile!

So, if I liked all 3 Gothic games can I assume this is pretty much the same with minor differences? If so shall probably get the game!

You'll love it. Its got most of the good things that made the Gothic series special. Its more refined and less buggy. The challenge is still there, very dangerous early on etc. Doesn't hold your hand like other games mentioned in this thread. A defo buy for Gothic fans.

May wander into town tomorrow and get it then. Was a toss up between this and Aion but the server queues on Aion are putting me off right now.

Seems to be mixed reviews about this game. But looking at the screens and some comments on here I think I will go and get it tomorrow. Not much to play at the moment.

i bought this last night and installed it tonight, first impression is very like oblivion, game is very good imo.
I dont think the coding is very good but might be a 360 import i have some jerky gameplay in the game especially when i have the torch in use not sure if thats a bug or just my machines game settings.

The lighting in this game is phenomenal.
I agree, it's very good, especially in motion. It's an odd game, the character models are very average but the lighting and shaders are fantastic. The sun rays are among the best I've seen in a game. The game looks even better with forced AA.

Uni internet for the win

Gonna try it now.

Pretty good game this and they did a really good job in creating a topical island for you to explore and interact with. Its just a shame they didn't put the same amount of effort in to the story (which like most rpg games, was probably thought up in a single half hour meeting), especially the ending which feels a lot like they were rushed and just thought "That'll do."

Would recommend any rpg fans to pick it up.

Some of you guys have completed this game so quickly! I have been playing for 2 days straight and don't seem to be very far at all..

..although I do spend hours just wandering around exploring.

Keep Stumbling across caves hidden away in alcoves in cliffs, leading down into ancient ruins and whatnot. Cant get enough of exploring!

Feeling quite powerful now too. Nice going back and blasting to bits the same monsters which we're eating me alive at the start.

Did anyone else find much use for swords in the game? Maybe I missed something, but the axes were always more powerful and couldn't really see the point in choosing the swords over them.

Yes, swords are much faster, meaning your parry/counter parrys are much better, likewise later on you can weild a two handed sword in one hand, meaning uber power but shield, which makes blocking far far more effective, massively so.

Swords are far better in general as the speed means you get interupted far less, also from what I can tell you can get uber swords far before you can get uber axe's.

Think the game was very good in all, though I felt like the choice between sides was too unclear, which is what made me end up not a mage, without really realising I was cutting myself out of the option. Oh well.

The only real irritation is that its often faster to jump everywhere, rather than run, so I was a bunnyhopping fool for far too much of the game.

Oh, its also very very bug free, infact the only bug I think I had at all, was I levitated to a platform underneath another, "landed" and ended up with half my body stuck in the upper platform, but that was one bug in the entire world.

Not a single crash, not a single incompleteable mission, not graphical glitches that I noticed, no characters stuck anywhere or missing items. Frankly, for a pretty long game thats almost unheard of so well damn done to them. From someone who tried Gothic 3 for all of a couple hours before I wanted to kill myself and gave up, a completely bug free game(or enough for it not to effect the game really at all) is a pleasure.

Even massive releases, FO3, Oblivion and any other game I can think of, Stalker being an obvious one, they all had bugs, lots of them, and not hugely stable.

Keep in mind the reviews are, afaik, all of the 360 one. I get the feeling they have worse graphics maybe, and the control system doesn't work as well on the 360, or maybe they just don't like the hardness, either way, the reviews don't really tie up to the game at all.

Just checked(because a review talked about size when installed to HDD on the 360) and the game is only taking up just over 2GB of hdd space. Tis a pretty huge game, that looks pretty fantastic, for it to only be 2gb in size.

Eastern Temple help - possible bug?

Anyone else encountering this problem?

****** MINI SPOILER ALERT ******

I'm in the Eastern Temple and have used the three busts to get through the gates, and have passed the spike traps.

I am now trying to get through a doorway which is directly underneath the shining green "Difficult cupboard".

However, every time I try to walk through the doorway, I teleport back to the outside of that cupboard. I don't mean like its a spell effect or anything like that, more like a glitch where I just appear.

Is this a bug or am I supposed to put something in the cupboard?

Thanks

*** Update - Pretty certain this is a bug, fired an arrow at a skeleton warrior through the door, as he ran at me he 'clipped' up to the next floor...

Can't use a shield with an axe. I think swords are a bit faster, too.

Well you can't with a two-handed sword either. Not until you get the later skill which allows you to one hand them, which you can also get for axes meaning you can use the shield with them also. But shields are not all that great in the game anyway and I'm not sure I'd give up that extra 30-40 damage just to take 5-10 less damage.

But if swords are faster, that certainly makes them a bit more attractive.

Think I would still stick with axes on a replay though. Especially since I found the best trick in combat is to forget all about blocking and parrying. Just charge up your axe (which you can get at level 2 skill), swing and hit, then dodge back and start charging up again. Once you get your timing right, you never need to get hit and can take down just about everything in three hits. And it's made even easier if you use the summon skeleton scroll and let that tank for you.
