Risen, out 2 October!

Just tried the demo.

Graphics - terrible

Control - Aweful, feels rubbery and has no feeling.

Voice acting - shockingly bad

Character design - even worse

Will deffinetly NOT be buying it. Can't believe they compared it for Fallout 3, it doesn't even come close.

Thats a bit harsh.

The voice acting is the same as Oblivions and Fallout 3, nothing amazing, nothing bad, just standard.

Control's are fine, never seen a problem.

Graphics are good in regards to the scenery, the characters graphics i admit are awful, but the terrain is nice.

Look at that first screenshots - can you sense the urge to explore that ruin? - that is what this game is about.
Finding yourself in over your head, retreating, getting stronger, returning and finally triumphing.Love it.
The scenery looks great, but the character graphic and animation is not as good. I hope this game becomes a massive succes - it deserves it - so their next game can marry this gameplay with higher production values.

Gotta say I'm really enjoying this game. The start was really very difficult and almost put me off, but now that I have the hang of it, it's really fun and unbelievably engrossing.

It's also unfair to say this game has terrible graphics.. while the character models and various other aspects are rather poor, the game is very pretty at times, and there is lots of attention to detail. It looks great in motion when you're out exploring the wilderness.

Harsh bud.

Anyone can see that the graphics can hardly be described as 'terrible'. They are certainly not.

Trolling are we?

Granted the controls and voice acting could be better, but neither distract from the gameplay to much.

Like others have said, I will be getting when it is cheaper, which will happen soon. If Dragon age was not imminent then I would have it in my hands now. Personally I prefer this setting to Fallout 3, I could spend days in such a world. I could see that FO3 is a great game but the setting just did not grab me and so it has sat on my shelf with only about 4 hours play time on it.

Why does it have to have a first person view?

ITs pretty damned decent, very hard, with some minor issues. Combat is almost too hard, especially to start, with nothing really giving you a clue as to how difficult an enemy is before you fight it its a case of learn where you can and can't go, and quick loading a lot.

Characters might not look brilliant, but, so what, the island itself is mostly pretty well designed and lots of bits look very very good. Quests aren't too bad, the boring collection ones can normally be done easily(eventually) alongside going after main quests.

I went the non mage path(I assume) and not altogether on purpose, combat does get easier, you'd be surprised how a little strength vastly increases your damage. Same with dexterity.

Either way, I'm enjoying it, and I've yet to see why people are saying the controls are dodgey, floaty/weird.

THe eurogamer review is a horrible review writen by a child. Its for the 360 version I think which could mean differing control and it may be worse. but its bemoaning things like the minor lock on, not directly controlling which way you face and if the enemy moves it doesn't follow around. Firstly that would pee me off personally if it did that, secondly, you can change the direction of your next strike of the weapon to follow yourself, thirdly, why would you expect it to take full control of where you hit. They basically seem to moan about non issues.

I do wonder if it looks significantly worse on the 360 than on the PC though, because reviews seem to mention it looking pretty bad, but playing it on top settings, it looks very decent.

From what i've read it's much worse on the 360, almost like a different game.

Played it for a couple of hours last night, quite enjoyable, love thats it actually challenging in combat. My rig doesn't handle full gfx settings too well at the minute..

Trolling are we?.

You can take your "roll eyes" back, thank you.

The voice acting is aweful, it does not even come close to comparing to F3 and Oblivion, voices don't fit faces, sentances come out as if they are being spoken to a wall, everyone sounds dead.

Ok, I may have gone overboard on the graphics, but they are hardly great, they are bog standard, Oblivion looked considerably better and that is years old.

The controls are dodgy, jumping animation is horrible and walking, as someone said above feels like your gliding along, there is no substance to it. Not being able to jump in any direction but forward is annoying.

Combat is far too unforgiving and far too weird, monsters being able to jump back 10 ft with no obviouse effort over and over and over again is ridiculous and the difficulty of the starting island is not what you expect, yes the answer to this may be "maybe its supposed to be hard lol" but as far as I'm concerned, it's a very poor idea to have new players ****ed off within 5 minutes of starting the game.

For me, it just seems like a down grade from much better RPG's like F3 and Oblivion.

Who compared this to FO3 and Oblivion in the first place?

They're completely different games to be honest.

Edit - At first it reminded me more of KOTOR with the dialogue. Combat system is different though.

I'll be getting this when I build a new PC, I love these type of games, even if graphics are not fantastic, immersion and gameplay win me over.

I assume combat is more player controlled? e.g. left mouse button to attack, right button to block? I'm not fond of games where you spam 1,2,3,1,3,1 to attack things.

Yes left mouse button to attack, right button to block, but really the great thing is you have to mpay attention to what the enemy is doing at all times to attack and block at the right times. This adds tension and prevents it from becoming boring button mashing.

Great, sounds like the combat style in Oblivion. :D

They are not direct comparisons just the closest I can think of, in that Risen is an open-world game mostly. The protagonist starts out as a clean slate and you learn what you want as yo go along (within reason). But ulimately the Gothic games have always been a bit unique, unless you've played them before its kinda hard to explain really. Risen has elements of all 3 previous Gothic games.
