Easy ladies. :p

Calories. So I have biked today on reasonably undulating roads at an average speed of 18.7mph for a distance of 51.9 miles. I've used about 3 online calory counters and the lowest one says I've used 1976 calories. How can that be right? Is it right?

If it is correct, I need to eat another 2500 calories to stay out of deficit according to my fitness pal. Do I need to do this? My goal is to stay roughly the same weight, maybe lose a kg or two, but hopefully continue gaining muscle.

I find this all a bit confusing, eating another 2500 calories would be a bit of a task today as I don't feel that hungry.

I dunno, what do you guys do?

I generally eat enough before and on the ride to get me round, then have a slightly bigger lunch/dinner than usual when I get back and that's it. I don't count to the nearest calorie.

Did you eat while riding?

Yep, had 2 x 127 calorie fruit and nut bar things. I've just started using myfitnesspal out of interest and have found it quite interesting, especially the breakdown of nutrients (protein, fat etc).

I usually do the same as you but thought I'd try and be a bit more scientific.

Usually just have a large breakfast of 800+ calories, then fuel as necessary after the first hour and a half or so. Depending on the state of glycogen stores before breakfast is the key to when/if you are going to bonk in my experience.

I built up my Спорт into a bike this afternoon and took it out for a quick spin before I take it to work tomorrow. So I've used my 32-spoke Velo Orange P-B-P rims for now which look just like the original sprint rims it came with. I've got my black Michelins on, which at 23c are VERY close - there's about 2.5mm clearance between the rear tyre and the seat tube, so any run-out on the wheel is NOTICEABLE! I'll probably switch to my Tanwall 20c's which look like the original tubulars. I've got the Campag twin pivot caliper doing braking duty and I used a pair of ultra narrow 1980's curly drop bars I had in the loft. I've also dropped the gearing down to 48-18 from 48-16 to give my knees a break for a few weeks. I can't take a pic until tomorrow because my camera is at work but this is it a few weeks ago before the build, so imagine it with bars and cranks and we're there:

So what's it like to ride? Well it's tall and very short. There is an absolutely outrageous amount of toe overlap with the front wheel because the end of the crank comes to within about 40mm of the tyre. The Bob Jackson had a lot, but I'm going to have to learn to get used to this because you can't steer very far at all if you're foot is there! It's a sprint frame with very steep head tube. When you accelerate, the bike stays dead upright and doesn't want to steer at all. Everything you put into it goes straight into the wheels and it accelerates VERY fast

So far so good, but I'm a tiny bit concerned about the threadless bottom bracket I've had to use. It didn't wind on many threads so I'm a tiny bit worried about cranking it up too tight. I'll give it a nip up tomorrow lunchtime after it's settled but I don't want to give it too much just yet.

Mmmmm, uhhhhh, well it sounds about right; however, you're only doing rides like that occasionally aren't you? So you're not really going to go into 'deficit' unless you're doing it every day. You'll just get more hungry tomorrow or the day after and catch up.

I do about 20 miles a day and I can feel it if I'm not eating enough. I generally settle around 3300-3500 calories a day, a bit less in this weather, but my appetite varies depending how much I'm doing. You'll know when you go into a real deficit - firstly you'll start losing weight (fat first), then you'll just feel lethargic and your strength will start dropping.

That's a BIG breakfast! What do you eat to get that many calories in, out of interest?

You'll need more than a frame though?

(and i doubt you can get one for £250)

Why so persistent, today?

Easy now :P

If I had a pimp ride I'd race on that since racing means getting every last thing that can help you nail it. Insurance companies seem to turn around claims very quickly even when up at the 5-7 grand mark.

I'm the sort of guy that would drive a Ferrari F40 daily though:p

Finally home from my weekend ride, set off yesterday morning riding to Dover, one small issue, being a wind break for someone who had set off from Lands End 13:00 on Friday!

He had rode the first 180 or so miles alone, but got picked up at Dorchester with another guy at 2 A.M, we met up with them at approximately 7.30 Saturday morning, and pushed on through, not the greatest of routes, as it took a big chunk of the A27 to shorten the distance for the guy doing the long route. We eventually hit St Margarets Cliff @ 19:00 saturday evening after about 9.5 hours riding time, but 30 hours for my mate! Long old day, ended up riding to the hotel in torrential rain about 3 miles away, which was actually the biggest laugh I had, was absolutely soaked through and with puddles up to my derailleur, I just couldn't be any happier as I kjnew I was on my way to the hotel.

http://app.strava.com/activities/70458146 my ride!

As soon as my mate puts his ride on Strava will post it up, was so long he had to use another Garmin!

I'd get a tough frame for Cat 3/4 racing and race the good bike if I got to Cat 2/1 (which wouldn't happen as I'm a lot closer to 40 than 20).

Crashes happen a lot in the lower leagues.

Cheers for the replies, it sounds like pretty much what I've been doing. This week I've been over calories on a few days, but that gets evened out by the rides I do. Common sense stuff, I over-thought it somewhat methinks!

all my Jerseys are a Large. so I bought a Large Rapha Team Sky top
not checked their website for sizing though, all feels ok, just an odd cut

So what I'm asking is, anyone with Rapha jerseys , how are they for you?

I've compared it to my TORM and its slimmer cut, slightly longer in the arms, and the neck is a bit smaller but the torso length is a lot shorter
It doesn't feel tight though, im wondering if I need a bigger size...

If I'm doing a big ride this is (80+ miles) tend to have something like the following:

Half grapefruit - 90 cals
60-70g of oats - 250 cals
300ml or so of milk - 150 cals
Chopped banana - 100 cals
Raisins - 120 cals
Some honey - 50 cals

Went and watched a MTB race today as the tracks just opened near me.

Rode over as I've not really used my MTB much, did a couple of laps before the race. Had my front wash out on the first lap and fell off. Punctured on the second... Maybe I'm not meant to ride MTB anymore!

This is disgusting to hear Berger!

Judging by the Sky guys, the tops are cut a bit shorter than a lot of mine but they should still be about 3" below your belly button/tops of your bib shorts.
