yea but I edited my post.
Newcastle has a really good underground metro system there is no need for people to bring cars into the city centre unless they have a lot of shopping.

maybe one carpark in the city centre but make it expensive to put people off and then a couple spread out somewhere near the metro stops not near the city centre that are fairly cheap to encourage there use maybe include a metro ticket as part of the carpark

oh wait I'm probably speaking to much sense

BTW do you live in newcastle? all those open air bike storage racks are a joke they are usually full of bikes drunken people have kicked.

newcastle has far to many bars and clubs for them to ever be safe they need to be proper enclosed ones. so people can't see what bike is there why not add something like that to car parks? oh wait to much sense

yeah same around manchester it seems plenty of ways in without a car but yet thousands use cars as its aparently faster ?! thankfully they are now planning things better and having large car parks at commuter towns so people can drive to the train station park up and ride in.

and yeah bike racks need thinking off here especially if people want cycling to be as big as in holland one day. we cant carry on with stupid metal loops and little else out side of bars and clubs.

I was planning to do it on the Saturday of the August bank holiday weekend. My destination is Newark on Trent aka crazy ***** Town just off the A1!

The ride I did on Saturday went through Newark. Nice place to ride. Unfortunately I will be in Northampton seeing some friends on that Saturday.

Good luck with it. Train home?

What happens when it breaks?

We used to have something similar for cars when I worked in Germany. At lease once a week half the cars parked in there would be stuck inside once a week when borked.

Also, Japan has double the population of the UK. It's got one and a half times the land mass, but only about 15% of that is suitable for building on or agriculture. The rest is unsuitable for anything other then forestry. Land is a premium over there.

yeah the car things can be very temperamental a mate in tokyo say's he'd never use one as all it takes is someone not closing a door properly and its borked for a day while they try and sort it.

as for the bike racks would be nice if we had them here and whats wrong with being a bit more intelligent about the land we have, sure its not the cheapest option but if its the best option why not.

Finally stopped raining so went for a walk. I've never seen so many sport shops in one area ever. 90% of the high street is either a sport shop or shoe shop the remainder are pubs & hotels.

Found a couple of nice bike shops too. One off the beaten track, really nice set up. Sells Parlee's, Ritte's & Cipollini bikes and Lightweight wheels. Spent around 2 hours talking **** about bikes in general. Then test rode a set of Lightweight Meilenstein tubulers on the R5. Nearly bought them on the spot

The other bikeshop was a more typical general LBS selling Specialized, Scott etc they had the CR1's westbrook are selling cheap look better in person than on the website. The female really knew her stuff as well which makes a change from the usual sales staff you get in run of the mill bike stores.

Reignited my interest in the Westbrook offer compared to £1300 for an R3 it's a much better deal. Might even be able to pop in and pick up a 6800 gruppo from merlin on the way back down.

I think you should look at the S2 for £1400 thye have. I am.

You've got an R5, get something different so you can compare and contrast. If you get the R3 you'll just keep thinking 'Why am I riding this today when I have an R5?'

Well, I would. And yes, I'm well aware that I'm looking at ans S2 even though I just got an S1 but that's different.........

I would, but I wan't it as an all purpose bike. Something I can race, commute & train on. as It's also going to replace my Ti. I think the Scott/R3 fit this criteria better than an out & out aero frame.

If I had an R3 I would be thinking "I'm glad I'm on the R3 and not the R5 in this **** weather" :p

gah! was moved to a different office in may, no bike parking so having to lock it to a wire fence (behind a police station, so not mega worried).
there are 3 other guys who cycle in and the same have said they would if there was somewhere safe for the bikes
with this in mind I've asked our estates dep if they will install a bike park/shed/shelter.
they have said they will take it to their next funding meeting (start of next month) but even if it gets the OK it'll be ages before it's installed etc.

Anyone got any advice on how to protect my bike when it's getting rained on? I've tried to keep it sheltered but I've noticed that there's a bit of rust appearing on a couple of the bolts etc.

Argh, it's only twenty past nine and it's getting on for pitch black out there. This is going to start cutting into my evening riding. Well lit roads ahoy, and slow downhill.

stick it in the office to be honest, it may get them to sort out a proper rack sooner than later.

tried that. got it in the ear, fire hazzard apparently.....
