I can see the point where it might improve your pedaling action but i can't see how it costs more? Freewheel is what 5-8 quid? If you've got brakes already then there's very little difference maintenance/cost wise compared to a fixie?

Generally with a flip flop hub you'd have both anyway; freewheel one side and fixed cog the other. I just need a fixed cog and a lock ring.

I agree with you that there is very little difference...but there is a difference.

The maintenance point was more about trying to change gear ratio (although a freewheel will seize if you dont look after it, a fixed srocket wont). It's very easy to whip off a fixed sprocket but it's a nightmare to get a freewheel off.

this is what i have on the SS i've built :) 18 tooth fixed cog one side and 18t freewheel on the other..

true, i guess having no brakes(front/rear calipers) would reduce the maintenance too but imo in a big city like london that would be unsafe, front brake only is the least i would ever have on a fixie.

Is it true that you have prove you wear oversized glasses, use an iPad and drink cappuccinos before you are allowed to purchase a fixie?

lol! i haven't been caught by the hypstapolice yet.. no cappuccinos.. no oversized glasses either here.. and can't stand iOS ;(

I'm going to get a fixie/singlespeed in a couple of years. Decent aluminium bike next year, fixie the next. Then carbon, then steel, then a tourer, then MORE AND MORE.

between me and my brother we already got 5 ;o and i have an itch to get a new Ti frame and build a new bike up at the end of year if i get permanent contract at the place im working.. its like you can never have enough.. the rule of n+1 is so right lol.

I've no interest in retro hipster fashion bikes so assuming I was to get any more it'd be a TT bike, track cycling bike or a replacement for one of my road bikes.

I wouldn't mind doing the velodrome again and I fancy trying a TT at some point too. I reckon I've got the build for it.

First TT tonight, rode the Stockport Clarion's 10 mile on the J2/1 course between Macclesfield and Knutsford. Clocked in at 26:04 (regular road bike, no aero gizmos). Those 4 seconds feel like being full on drop kicked in the testicles by Dan Carter when I could have made them up at innumerable points in the course. Try again next week? :D

Congrats OMS, that's a great time :)

Thanks. :) I was pretty happy with my pacing, fairly even all the way around aside from adjusting for a few lumps and bumps. The first half was into a headwind which was hard work and meant my splits were something like 14 mins out and 12 mins back. The tailwind was much appreciated as my legs started to go though!

I think I'd like to get close to 24 mins before I even start contemplating a TT bike as it's not something I'd consider doing every week like some people. That said, there was some absolutely stunning kit on show. My absolute favourite was a guy on an all black S-Works Shiv and he did it justice by clocking just over 21 mins for the course.

Not selling one but I just bought one and yes, it's awesome.

Which one did you buy? The road machine or rock n roll ? Think I'll get a road machine

Someone come to Herne Hill velodrome with me.:)

I want to try some track cycling but I can't seem to get my friends interested!

^Same price at Vanilla Bikes for the Rock n Roll and the Road Machine is cheaper still. They also have 1/3 off accessories, might pick up the riser block for £20 there.

Can't fault PX though, I ordered my Road Machine at 10am and it arrived the same time the next morning. Just annoyed it then popped up a bit cheaper at Vanilla Bikes!

If you've got a singlespeed and your running a freewheel just go get a geared bike you wusses!

Fixed or nothing!

Seems like a fast course, got a Strava link?

There's some lovely bikes at ours too, one chap with £9k worth of Cervelo TT bike and disc wheel.

Bit much for a bike you can't really ride that often.
