Alright Alberto! :P

Out Front mounts are much better imo, got one on my road and MTB, easier for glancing and when you've got your body down. I need to sort out some sort of mount for my TT bike as it's on the stem which certainly isn't ideal, but have my bottle mounted between my handlebars, so not really sure where else to put it. Although can now rotate screen to landscape so might relook at where it could go.

Yeah I like the out in front mount, much better for quickly and safely looking when riding.

Superstar have their metal outfront mounts back in stock: http://www.superstarcomponents.com/en/garmin-mount-black.htm
Similar to the K-Edge metal mounts but instead of £35 they are £12.99.
I'm just about to order one.

Any recommendations for 28mm tyres? I want to try some on my single speed bike when I get it built. No real reason, I'm just curious to see how they'd ride. The Vittoria Rubino Pro Tech cost £18 each from Wiggle and look pretty good. Any other thoughts? Vittoria do some very cheap Zaffiro ones in 28mm, and you can get Continental ones that cost nearly as much as car tyres at the other end of the scale...

@Von

FWIW with my limited experience

I've used the 28mm non tech ones for the last 6 weeks, handled my bulk no problem.

Decent grip in the wet, not bad for the price.

I don't find the out front mounts make that much difference tbh. Unless you have some kind of neck disorder, it's not really much different glancing down in front of you or glancing in front and slightly left. Craig Bellamy probably has one on account of him having no neck. Sandi Toksvig as well.

I thought it'd be quite good for TTing, so have one on the good bike and just the normal handlebar mount on the winter bike. But tbh, i never look at it during a 10 mile TT as I find it much better to judge my pace by feel (ie does it really ****ing hurt? If 'yes', continue...). Maybe if you were pacing over a longer distance or using a power meter to pace it might be good.

Obviously the main reason to have one is that it looks pro. And i suspect that's why most people do. And i'd concur that the superstar ones are good quality and at a great price.

Superstar mounts are good, although they are tight for an Edge1000 as they mount under rather than over, so hit the bars when twisting on and off the unit. I have mine right in front of my stem on my road bike which I wouldn't be able to do with a superstar mount, but can with my garmin one.

The BB cable guides do differ as I compared to the one on my MTB which had larger guides and the sealed cables would have fitted on, however the moulding was different as the holes on the frame to route the FD cable will differ. Whether or not a different one from another bike would fit I'm not sure, but since I'd cut the old cable to remove it I needed a solution so had to use the old outers. I don't ride in the rain much, just the clear plastic had started to come off the old cables as you can see in the photo which made them a little sticky.

The out front mount makes it a bit easier to read and makes the bike look neater IMO. I don't spend much time looking at it as you get a feel for the right cadence and power your legs are pushing after a while.

Regarding cable guides, they're probably fairly standard between different bikes from the same manufacturer - but possibly vastly different between manufacturers! Maybe someone who works in a LBS may know more... Jony?

I don't think I'll be a Froome staring at my stem (nothing to do with watching his power figures allegedly), just now I have the Garmin I want to view/use it more rather than the occasional glances when I remember! ;)

I have no space on my bars so my 810 is on the top of my stem currently.

I'm not the most flexible of riders as I have short arms & legs for my height (!) and I'm probably riding in a very upright position so anything that helps me use my new expensive gadget more is a plus! ;)

Thanks Armo & Asprilla, I'll grab one of those! At that price I'd be silly not to! :D

I'm going to need another mount at some point soon, as I'm fairly soon going to have three bikes on the go. I can get an outfront mount for £13 or whatever, or a laccy band stem one for like £7, so for the sake of a few quid I'd quite like to try one of the outfront ones.

The link has them for £12.99 in various colours and has free shipping (+paypal payment) too! Just ordered one! :)

£25 for a Garmin one from Wiggle... Are the gel cases worth getting? Not dropped or got my 810 really wet... Yet! (only a matter of time)

I recently got an out-front mount and it has made a huge difference for me. It's not that I couldn't read the screen before but now it requires less eye movement so I can keep half an eye on the road.

It may depend on your bike though really - with a CX bike I'm a bit more upright than someone with a bike with race geometry.

Just get the SRAM one. There's no reason to pay almost double for a Garmin-branded one.

Given your size and presumable weight I can't imagine you getting any benefit from 28mm. Just stick to 25mm where all the cool kids (sadly not me any more) ride.

Alternatively, buy some 28mm Gatorskins and relive early 2014 for me ;)

I'm about 73Kg fwiw. Maybe I will just stick with 25mm... I can probably get some cheaper tyres at that width anyway.

Even when I was a lot heavier than I am now I don't think that the 28mm tyres helped me at all - maybe if I had been using a pannier or some such. At one point I was over 20kg heavier than you too  I also found 28mm tyres to feel really bouncy, which makes you feel less stable on bumps and knackers your cornering a fair bit.

Interesting that some 28mm tyres came out ahead in one of their tests. Previously (I've no idea of the link any more) I'd read that 25mm was the sweet spot.
