Road Cycling Essentials

I have a pair of 28mm Vittoria Rubino's waiting to go on, but I'll replace them with something better when they wear out. P4Es will be a strong contender, as I'm hoping this bike can become my commuter, assuming I can manage the couple of short climbs on the route there and back. The gearing is 48*18, and the worst gradient is about 7%, so it should be do-able without my knees falling off, we shall see. After all, the record for climbing the Rake in Rambsottom, which hits 25% near the top, was set by someone riding a single speed 42*19 so clearly it can be done...

It sounds pretty doable though potentially hard work, yeah :)

I quite fancy going riding to the west/north of where I am this weekend but the weather looks atrocious :/ I might end up stuck inside on the turbo again.

First ride on upgraded bike - done.
It's so much quicker than before, the bike doesn't want to stop accelerating.

I was pacing it relatively easy and still beat one of my own KOM's by 2 seconds.
Pushed hard at the end on 2.5 mile lumpy section and smashed my PR by 54 seconds.

My 70 miler Sportive on Sunday is going to be fun :)

There's a flatter route I can take which misses off a a climb in either direction, and also avoids a big junction with a motorway, which would be nice. It's a private unpaved road, though, so I think I might have to recce that.

Where did you get your RB longs? I ordered a pair from Tredz but they emailed me saying they had ran out of stock :/

Lolz, guess! :o

They arrived mid last week but ordered them on the 11th so I possibly beat you to them!? :o :p

suck it! For the price I wasn't missing out :p

Good going! Nice work! Good distance? A 70 mile sportive might be a bit of a shock if you've not broken in the saddle and bedded in the brakes so take it easy/carefully! :)

Gaahd damn it :p

I think it was you that had done some cycling around the Goyt area recently. I want to do a day out and possibly an overnight with a couple of clubbies in the Peak District Area. It's about a two hour drive for us so ideally I'd like to plan a good day's riding that takes in some quiet roads, scenery and climbs. Can you help me put together a route/itinerary and advise on whats not to be missed?

Cheers Al

I could give a few pointers. Which area of the peaks are you looking to stay in? Have you not decided yet?

I'm familiar with the peak district from the Goyt and southwards.

Totally open minded. Just want to see some different parts if the country this year vs the same old routes. I am a bit disillusioned with the price of Sportives and would rather spend a few quid on an overnight and some decent riding.

Yes, has yours not made it yet?

I'm glad I ordered when I did - I got the last medium blue frame and they're not expecting more until May!

Dispatched today, should be here tomorrow then or Monday(hope its tomorrow, at work on Monday) ! I went for a medium raw, at 5'9ish I think that'll be bang on with 100mm stem! :)

Cool. I can give you hills of you want hills :p I'll mock up a possible route, highlighting some of the climbs/landmarks etc :)

Sounds like topgun has you covered but I'm happy to weigh in too :)

Last time I went up to the Goyt I came from north of it so I went up through the brickworks - going through Kettleshulme is nice too if you work out the route right. Once you're through the Goyt then Cat and Fiddle is pretty much mandatory :p After that parts of Macc Forest are nice and from there I guess you could go into Alderely. At this point you're moving further and further away from the peaks though.

Snake Pass is much further north but cycling around that area can be very fun (assuming you avoid anything like rush hour).

I'm not sure how many days you've got and/or how hardcore you want to make the rides but I'd be tempted by a loop that is Brickworks > Goyt > Buxton > North towards Whaley Bridge > Chapel-en-le-Frith > Edale > Hope Valley > er... somewhere :p

Are you planning on doing something like staying in Buxton and then heading out from there or somewhere else?

Went for a 2014 Pinnacle Dolomite 3 in the end - http://www.evanscycles.com/products/pinnacle/dolomite-three-2014-road-bike-ec054869

Tried out the L and XL last week and found the L to be the better fit. I was going to get the 2 (with Claris) but I was advised to go Sora if I could for the extra gear.

Claris is okay from all accounts but Sora is (I imagine, having not tried Claris) probably a bit better, yeah.

I think I went on about this at the time but you should totally swap out the tyres for some better ones. Ask the shop if they'll swap them for Pro4 Endurance or Service Course or something. Kenda kind of suck. Even if you end up having to pay a little extra it's really worth it.
