he has found this Kona
never heard of Kona...bu then I have never heard of Ribble as well..now I ride carbon ribble :)
For that sort of money, you may as well go for a cyclocross bike and benefit from greater tyre clearances and a more relaxed geometry. For example, I commute on a Pinncale Arkose with 700x35 Schwalbe Marathon Supreme tyres fitted, it shrugs off potholes as though they're not even there.

Yep, definitely a CX bike. I'm glad I went for mine, despite it having terrible cantilever brakes. having thick tyres as well as its carbon fork makes commuting pretty comfortable.

Disc brakes on a road bike??
Yep, they're coming. I've noticed a number of the higher-end TT bikes have discs and it'll only be time until they've filtered through to normal road bikes. Even Triathlon magazine hate them but are warning everyone to get used to it :(

Not sure what the benefits of disc brakes on a TT bike are; aero isn't one of their qualities.

I never get roadies who are anti disc brakes, there is no comparison in the dry and in the wet the difference is astonishing!

My formula brakes on MTB are leagues better than dura ace brakes I've tried on a road bike and make my tiagra feel woefull, even now I'm confident on cantis when I was on my MTB the other day I was sinned by the brakes!

My take on this is:

My caliper brakes can lock up and skid my wheels in dry or wet, so there's no need for discs on alloy rims.

But the new paradigm will be carbon rims and disc brakes, so you can get lighter wheels and not worry about delamination from heating the composite rims up. This is why disc brakes are the next big thing.

Locking a wheel on a 42mm tyre isnt the same on one that is 23mm, plus you have more than twice the surface area to grip the road.

Only advantage I can see for discs is on big decents where there is a big risk of cooking the rim. And like I said no rim wear.

cooking the rim? mind explaining for a noob.

If you're braking a lot (on long descents, etc) then the rims can get very hot. Carbon rims are not as good at dissipating the heat as metal ones and that can lead to problems with the rim. Metal rims also have problems with heat, but you wont damage the rim itself. In extreme cases the inner tube can explode or tubular tyres can slip off when the glue becomes softer in the heat.
Disc brakes get hotter than rim brakes, but they dont have the problems where it can cause a sudden tyre/tube failure.

thanks :) thought so(have 0 experience with carbon rims!) managed to get my rims really hot a couple of times :) hot enough for pads to stink of burning rubber when i finally came to stop!

Been out of the country last week, so that's one week out of the saddle, and now I can't cycle to work at the moment due to flooded roads!

Missing it already :(
