HR depends what I'm up to.

My Garmin track from the bike leg of the Nantwich Triathlon says I averaged 169bpm, though a 55km ride I did a few weeks before had an average of 141bpm.

A Garmin or similar with HRM is on my list of things to buy.

I've been thinking about this sort of thing for Christmas, but until I am actually doing long enough tours that GPS mapping is an issue, I don't really feel the need. I think I'll make do with getting a cycle computer, so I can see my instant and average speeds, and a little GPS logger for £40 or so that I can just stick in my pocket, rather than relying on my phone and nuking the battery on that.

I doubt I'm ever going to be that good a cyclist that it's worth my while worrying about my heart rate and cadence and power and the like. My residual asthma and general build mean I'm always going to be suited to a slower pace and longer distance. Maybe I'll prove myself wrong on that front, but I doubt it. I'm already exceeding my own expectations in terms of my cycling.

Speaking of which, I fancy giving those hills you play about on round Anglezarke/Rivington etc a go this weekend. You doing anything?

I'm pretty busy this weekend, I'm afraid. Perhaps next weekend?

im 34, so the zones would be far different

220 minus your age gives you a rough idea what your maximum heart rate is, so mine is 186

I think thats an old wives tale, i'm 34 also and my HR goes over 200 - its more to do with fitness and your lung capacity when you start out any new sport and as you get better your HR will drop to reflect your improved capacity etc.

I've been ok so far with my phone, just need to make sure its fully charged. I'm thinking about going for one of the basic Garmin ones as I don't want to spend £300 + on the Edge 800 when I'm not sure I will use the extra features.

fitted my crud road racers, kinda fiddly to fit! but they sit ok i guess :) they do feel a bit "lose" and over potholes and uneven road i would not be surprised if they did make some noise..

I have to say im pretty impressed with the Bryton 40 i bought - £110 with HR strap then i added a Garmin cadence sensor (its better than the bryton one) for £26.

I plan on a full mapping one next year but couldnt justify the outlay initially so went for the bryton over the garmin 500 - i suspect new model garmins will be out soon hence many stores having sales on them!

Since I got my Trek about 3 weeks ago I've been riding without one, just have my phone in my pocket or bag.

Doesn't seem to be doing my average speed any harm so think I will run without one till I get a Garmin.
