Is it always raining up norf?

Only in my heart /emo

Just entered for the Ride London, be great to get in, although if not ill just turn up and ride it anyway:)

Or not. It's one thing doing it on a regular sportive but everyone else's entry fee is paying for road closures and event policing so tagging on for free is a bit out of order, imo. Not to mention that a load of people gatecrashing will likely see an abrupt end to this event and the possibility of similar events in the rest of the UK.

It's not twice as good but it's 3.47 times cooler and 1.96 times more stylish.
You're right, of course. I had forgotten to take that into consideration. The Gore is not especially stylish, but as a man with a spare tyre around his waist, no cycling clothing looks good on me. If it's style you want, then surely you have to go for the Rapha & Raeburn Wind Jacket?

It doesn't have to look good, you just have to think it looks good and you'll instantly be riding with more panache and so will be faster.

I thought we'd established that we are pretty much are the same weight?

I quite like the orange one of those, but not even I can justify another jacket alongside my Rapha rain jacket and softshell.

It seems I've been going about this cycling lark all wrong! I'll be slamming my stem and shaving my legs the moment I get home this evening.

I believe we're also the same height (5'9/175cm)? The devil, as they say, is in the details. For example, I have a 28" inside leg, and at the moment my waist is 35". You are pretty much the inverse of that.

Were it not for the spots, I'd be inclined to agree.

That's the spirit. If you do shave your legs then maybe you can answer the question that's always troubled me; where do you stop shaving?

At the moment I'm more like 32" waist / 34" leg. Gonna be some hard miles this winter.

Short line if you're lazy, front of the legs only and short line if you're David Millar. Bikini line if you want to look fabulous.

Hmm, I could also get some Assos Mille bib shorts. Anybody got a pair? Are they really worth £150.

Pair on BR Road Parts at the moment for £85 if you're a medium. Make him an offer as the smaller sized stuff never seems to sell as well on there as the XL Rapha or 3XL Castelli (ahem). :p

You need to join me and Oli for some riding!

Once the back-up child is a couple of months older Mrs A will be running again (she's entered the Brighton half after four years off the scene) and I'll be giving her all the encouragement and time she needs to train - in return for regular weekend cycle rides and then I'm up for it.

Did my first (incredibly minor) inner tube repair last night. Despite it being a trivial activity, I feel like a cyclist now!

On a related note, what's the rule of thumb for replacing bike tyres? I only ask because on a car you'd shift them when the tread was worn, but already (after about 200miles-ish) the Vittoria Zaffiro's that came on my boardman are smooth along the middle stretch of tyre. Plenty of tread left on the curve of the tyre though.

Cheers guys!

Tread on road bike tyres is largely superfluous; it's there to give a feeling of security in the mind of the user, but in reality a slick gives the best grip in all realistic scenarios.

I change my tyres when they start to 'square off' or when they start to get badly cut up. I'd love to say i checked for this regularly but usually I get a puncture, look at my tyres and think I'd better replace them.

Cheers Asprilla. The thought did cross my mind as to whether I should buy tyres and store them somewhere, or wait. I know that tyres tend to be "you get what you pay for", so was going to keep half an eye out for bargains cropping up.

When you say "square off", I presume you mean a noticeable flat across the top of the tyre?

That right.

I know what tyres I like so if I see them on offer and I've got the cash then I'll get some. Tyres, chains, cassettes and brake pads are consumables and so it pays to have spare ones around.
