Still a bit of a noob with bike mechanics. I'm looking at different tyres for the CX bike. I was looking at Schwalbe Durano, as they seem to have better puncture protection.
However the tyres are 700 x 23c. The tyres that came on the bike are 700 x 35c, can I still use them?

I assume I just need to use the tubes as my road bike, but if someone can confirm before I buy a set I'd be grateful!

Get some schwalbe marathon 700x35c. Really good tyres and much better for a cx bike

Nice replacement Gilet turned up from Chain Reaction todayafter the toggle bust on my old one! Black instead of blue though, although need to send some bits to Endura so will be seeing if they can fix this too, might not mention it was accident damaged after coming off last week! :D

Turbo session tonight, English, 300Watts for 60 seconds 7 times, 50 second rest, 8 minutes rest then repeat again! Hard work!

Sounds fairly similar to Sufferfest Revolver. Short warm up then 16 intervals at 100% for one minute and then rest for one minute.

They trick you though and claim it's only 15 intervals at the start. Also, one of the intervals is actually 1.5 minutes. Such barstewards :p

If janp's actually doing CX or off-road agreed - 25mm for that really isn't a great choice. If primarily on-road though, 25mm all the way :)

Did it last night

Back to 90 minutes of Sweetspot over/unders tonight.

Very nice. Last time I did it I stuck to about 400 for the intervals (90% IF). Hopefully in March after my break I'm going to approach things in a more structured way so I can do things properly and not always be so knackered that I end up having to go slowly just so my legs don't fall off.

Are you doing Galena tomorrow?

edit: Stalking your ride feed... Warlow looks quite interesting - nice balance of power zones. How did you find it to ride?

Warlow was ok. The sweetspot sessions don't break you like the sufferfest stuff but I find them really good for me psychologically. I am quite a good climber but I don't have the power output on the flat that others do. Part of that is because I don't push myself into that slightly uncomfortable place. I am a bit of a spinner really so I am hoping to improve that just below threshold area. The intervals force you to keep in the spot where you are starting to accumulate lactic but controlled so it never builds beyond a certain level that exhausts you.

Does that make any sense?

Here's another option for you:

http://www.evanscycles.com/products/cannondale/caad8-7-sora-2014-road-bike-ec053957

Still Sora, but the frame is very similar to the CAAD10 which is widely regarded as one of the best alu frames around, if not full stop. Worth considering. That said, if £600 is your max budget make sure you leave room for everything else. Helmet, lights, clothing, puncture repair and maintenance stuff etc. Also pedals

Your post was helpful as it made me find and go to the cannondale lbs and try some out. I actually found the synapses more comfortable and almost bought a 2013 105 model at 699 but ran out of time.

When I got home I found a virtually new synapses in the right size 2014 tiagra on the bay which i threw a bid at and won for 411 so I am very happy and cant wait to try a proper road bike.

-------

Can someone recommend me some reasonable flat pedals as it didn't come with any?

Also someone mentioned changing the seat to a charge spoon or scoop. I obviously haven't tried the standard one yet but a) I am overweight so comfortable seat will help and b) the std seat is white so if I keep it like new it should help resale of the bike in a year? and c) the spoon is only £18 on wiggle. Should I just buy one now before getting and sorting bike?

cheers

You won't know about the saddle till you try it but certainly the scoops have a good rep, i've been meaning to pick one up for my trainer. I wouldn't expect the cannondale to have a bad saddle anyway as they're one of the better brands!

Depends what you mean by flat pedals, i've accumulated 3 sets as I don't use them and all my bikes came with basic ones I replaced with SPD's! If you have friends who ride road they'd probably have some spare and the spanners required to fit them. If you're planning on doing your own maintenance then a pedal spanner is a good investment now (£15 parktool one is good) and you can change the flat pedals again to clip-less when you make 'the change' ;)

Halfords is an expensive place to buy the tool and especially the pedals!

Major votes here for wiggle! (I love the site), trust me your email if you want a referral (you get some sunglasses I think And I get a voucher for 10% of the value of your order if over £50) or someone else if you have a friend who uses it and you're a new customer :)

Caved in last night and bought a Garmin with gubbins for my rides and turbo trainer sessions.

Awfully expensive this cycling malarkey :p

Yeah. I've done a fair few sweet spot sessions (just Galena and Geiger several times) and I massively prefer the feel of the workout to the Sufferfest stuff but the lack of video gets a bit boring at times. I have watched all the TV/films I have to death so sometimes Sufferfest comes back out.

It's interesting to hear that you do well on hills but find flats harder to maintain speed on. I'm kind of the opposite despite having quite a similar feeling when it comes to pushing myself - I am only now really learning to deal with the discomfort of really going for it.

On the vast majority of bikes the supplied seat is utterly awful so I'd definitely get the Charge Spoon/Scoop sooner rather than later. Having the original seat in like-new condition will help with resale assuming the bike is a semi-cheap one (i.e. if it was a 1.5k bike people are unlikely to care about the seat on it unless it's a super expensive one).

It all adds up :p

Good stuff about the Garmin though. Which one did you go for?

I'd like to do 1000km a month, with at least one metric century none stop a month.

That's a 10% increase on this year, just need to get more longer rides in.

Also, I'd like to try and win an A grade race, but that's not likely to happen! Maybe a handicap I have a chance....

Power wise, I'd like to do 400w for ten minutes (5w/kg).

I can tick off the metric for Jan.

Came close to the power today, 390w for 5:30, not sure if I was slightly higher than that over 5 minutes but I doubt it. Not weighed myself either since Xmas so I might be over 80kg. :(

I'm feeling like my saddle is too narrow between the legs but fine for my sit bones... I end up getting saddle sore at the top of my leg where it meets the perineum as if on a narrow saddle it ends up catching and then gets irritated with riding. Need a saddle loan program to try a load of different ones without it getting expensive!

Guy at work today road in on his road bike with 23 tyres on, in the snow. Utterly, utterly crazy. Its just not worth the broken collarbone or smashed up bike. Madness.

Out of interest, what's your FTP and w/kg (without bike weight)? I know it'll be ridiculously higher than mine but y'know..goal to aim for :D

23mm tyres here and I was fine :p Then again, central Manchester often doesn't get the weather quite so bad as other places nearby.

Taking primary a lot and sticking to the main roads usually is safe as long as you take things slowly.

I did that yesterday:

First time cycling to work, did the same route home but Garmin died half way back. I just make sure I'm running 120psi and away I go.

Back to cycling jackets... this one looks quite tempting though I may wait for a sale:

I wonder how tight a fit you could get with a smaller size.

The only disadvantage is that I just know that my friends will all call it a DHB fleshlight jacket.

You work in Bury? My condolences :p

I do indeed :( Thankfully I don't live there!

I was tempted by that jacked but I get too warm as it is. I just wear my normal top under a fleeced long sleeve dhb top. I get some mad looks from other cyclists, especially when I'm wearing shorts too. I just get too warm! Not so much fun in the rain though.

ok pro4's were a hell to fit! my rubino's took ages and were painful but these! jesus.. I don't ever pinch my tubes but I got so frustrated that I forced the thing on after 30ish minutes of fighting it! and to my surprise, front was flat this morning :(

rear got pinched yesterday too.. amazing.

well, the tyres are now and seem to be quite sticky.. hopefully I'll got no punctures as that'll be a pain up the bum
