Get to Marylebone and take the Chiltern Line to Princes Risborough/High Wycombe. You'll be at the feet of the Chilterns. Plenty hilly round those parts :p

Easy enough to rack up 3,500ft + over 50miles or so.

Need to arrange some sort of meet-up with some of you guys in the Chilterns. Somewhere like Marlow and then proceed from there.

As for the charity links, I'll get something to you both (Shamrock and FT) soon :)

Snip

Although my derailleur isn't moving to the 32 cog at the moment so I might have to get that sorted first!

As long as it reaches the 27 you're fine ;):p

Definitely. I'll get Maxeh and Alexisonfire up this way too. Kimi could make a special trip as well I'm sure :)

Aha... it reaches 28. Which is what I used from halfway up Caerphilly Mountain at mile 80 on Sunday for the Velothon... spinning about 50rpm :( I think I would have ended up walking if I was solo and no other riders/supporters around.

Definitely up for a meet-up and seeing a bit more of the Chilterns. I was tempted by the Wiggle Chiltern Classic but wouldn't mind just stealing some of their route instead!

Met just posted this looking for the owner... What are the electric cables at back doing? And mudguards on those rims :p

Finally feeling like I've made some progress:

It's been ages since I felt remotely "fast"

Last night I went out with a guy from work, who's been doing loads more rides than I have. Climbing 5000-9000+ feet on his rides. Most of mine have been 2500 or less. And compared to him I've hardly been out. This was a flat-ish ride, of 20-something miles.

The last two links above are Ripon > Northallerton and back. I did them on the same day, last summer. I had a pretty decent rest between the two rides, and it was warm, dry and generally a nice day. I forget how far apart they were timewise but I guess one at around midday and the other back home late on the evening.

16.5 / 16.6 mph average. Flying along, I thought I was.

Last night was flat with a few lumps along the way. I don't know how elevation data is calculated by mr Garmin, but it's got more hills in it than the above two... so nearly 2x the climbing seems accurate... even though it all seems to be below sea level.

Steve wasn't feeling 100% / full of energy so spent a bit of time waiting for him to catch up, but most of the time we were pretty close. Bit of drafting here and there but mostly not. I was on the front 95% of the time.
I wasn't full of energy either, but had more than I expected.

Until the last few miles my average was about 18. It dropped off a bit on the last few gradual uphills but I didn't really have much left in my legs to push on, plus I was waiting for steve. And there was a bit of a headwind on the last long straight.

Is a 1.1mph average increase good in this case? My previous rides (with more climbs in) didn't feel anywhere near as good, even on the flat bits.
I'm going to repeat this ride next week sometime with steve, but I'll actually eat some proper food during the day... see if I can beat 18mph.

Headwind can absolutely rape average speed on a ride.

Focusing on trying to blitz average speed on a ride can actually stop you properly recovering before & after climbs and overall end up going slower than if you had just paced the ride like you should a climb.

Nationwide manhunt for the owner of that thing so we can form an ordely queue and each get a turn at skelping him in the chops.

Ah, are you planning to be in the UK much over the summer? We didn't do that ride last year but I'm sure we can sort something this time... :)

I'm almost full time back in the UK :(. Doing some consultancy hopping between the two but will be back either before the end of the year/start of the next. I will miss the mountains..
