Road Cycling

Cyclists are so ****ing rude. 90% of the people I waved/nodded/said "Good morning" to today didn't even bat an eye. ********.

I've generally found the Chilterns much more friendly than Surrey in terms of other cyclists but then there are far less. I guess also when I tried it out it was November so there weren't many other cyclists about.

I was out mountain biking nearer Reading yesterday and actually every road cyclist gave a nod or a hello. Even the one who we subsequently got into a little race with and missed our turning! Only pedestrians and horse riders were unfriendly.

I had an argument today on a warm down with some idiot who was complaining I was taking up too much road (gravel in road so had moved out) whilst he was on the phone, who then almost crashed into a car coming the other way. I wish I had kept him distracted just a bit longer.
Reminds me of this video :D

I certainly noticed some horrendous roads in the Chilterns today, made Surrey seem like the alps

Aha, this is pretty accurate. I wasn't best impressed with the road quality out there. Lots of gravel and grit at the side and sudden massive potholes.

Something I wanted to ask about (not really cycling related, but I see it a lot):

I am correct in thinking, that when walking on a country road, without a pavement next to it, you are meant to walk facing the oncoming traffic? I saw a lot of people (especially runners) running in the direction of the traffic, rather than against it.

It's recommended that you do so but pedestrians are a law unto themselves really.

PlanetX BREXIT Bike?!
Shows how desperate they are to sell bikes
The jackets are £90 or £95 in the shop, which is why I'm tempted!<snip>
I'm going to swear if I manage to get to the shop tomorrow and they've sold out "due to all the web orders..." :D:p:eek:
Got myself one of the jackets and wore it yesterday in a shower, although it feels very similar material to a packable, I didn't melt in it & the protection is superb! Impressed (just as well for £90)!

I called by the shop when commuting home on friday in torrential rain (they're not normally open past 5). I was soaked to the skin (check pics), probably get that wet only once or twice a year! Typically it was only light drizzle when I left work so my jacket was in my bag and only had my packable on...! I hadn't got my wallet with me (doh) so got Sparrow to put one to one side (he was tempted to let me take it!), also picked up one of the NFTO Black jerseys in Large. Should've got a medium... Hopefully I'll catch them open one night this week to swap it!

Guy in the shop (Sparrow) said they'd sold over 100 sets of shorts & jersey that week! :o
Aha, yeah. Possible but I don't think so in this case. The last 5 miles of his ride after going through a car park are at 0 cadence, 25mph avg.
Cadence sensor battery ran out? ;)
Ordered a Medium but it seems pretty small, a little too tight across the chest and arms so I've had to order a Large now. Seems like a nice jersey though.
Yeah seems a great jersey, especially for the price. I have a Large here if you wanted to swap your Medium (unsure on their returns).
Ambulance called after he started to get worse.

I'll put up a picture of the helmet later but a very good reminder about ALWAYS wearing a helmet - could have been much worse!!
Damn, hope he's ok!? I scoff at anyone who doesn't wear one - I got knocked off at no more than 7mph and my head hit the road twice with enough force to crack the helmet. Scary!

As last week was such a write off (due to the weather) I went for a long loop yesterday, got up late and was an hour later than planned, which meant I missed to catch any of the local road race around Weobley.
As I left home at 11.45 I didn't eat before leaving, munched 2 bars on the way but didn't have much power left by Weobley. Was glad the run back to town was quite flat, otherwise I'd have been in trouble. Won't do that again! Doh!
18mph+ avg on the way out (with climbs), 17mph back (mostly flat). Power levels felt very average most of the ride really and I also chickened out of a climb I had a goal on because of this. Not sure why as I didn't have a heavy week? Guess I've just lost some form due to the reduction in miles, lack of food/fuel and carrying lots of heavy stuff around on the Saturday.

The rain came (just some drizzle with a couple of brief showers) on the outskirts of Weobley so I headed for home rather than extending my loop any further. Had my new NFTO rain jacket with me and it worked fantastically, my only 'gripes' would be the rear 'flap' is a bit flappy (even around my buttocks) and the off-centre zip, although it works well, does mean the jacket attempts to rotate on the body. Fit is superb, although arms could be a bit closer. It looks fantastic! Doesn't feel it but must be really breathable, as even without any vents I didn't feel it 'boil in the bag' in the slightest! :)

Walk towards traffic except on sharp bends or other brands with poor visibility where you should cross to the outside of the bend.

Excellent. This also brings up another thing from yesterday. On my way home, I had to bail out on the Quarry Wood road climb (really nasty steep corner, and I wasn't going to make it). I got off, and pushed around the corner (off the road, basically in the trees). On the straight bit, a cyclist behind me says something like "stupid bloody *something*" and cycles past me.

I'm standing on the other side of the white line, basically in the trees: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.5...4!1sUr_IncNZQJazUlzRbn2M9A!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

The other cyclist sounds like an idiot to be honest.

The Morvelo Bloc orange one? I've already ordered a Large but thanks for the offer :) Their returns isn't free, but really it probably won't cost more than £3-4 to send recorded and the discount was fairly good to start with.

Still super happy about eating/drinking on the bike. I know most of you obviously do this naturally, but it felt like a decent step in keeping my balance and fishing around in my back pockets etc.
A good milestone to cross off as it opens up lots of opportunities - checking a phone for texts, changing glasses & sharing gel/food with mates. Lots of guys bang food on their bars to open it, but as I eat various different types of bars I usually open with my teeth. Next one I've not mastered is putting a jacket on/off. It just takes me too long! Also can't ride with both arms off the bars for more than ~15s/20s :o
You don't want some super high end fancy frame that may or may not have an impact on ride quality. You want wider tyres.
Not many current 'road' frames will take 28cm with much/any clearance, it's only the 'endurance' frames which do. Even then not many of them will fit 28cm's with guards.
Already on 25s. I'm not sure how much more clearance I have on my frame to go to 28s. It looks pretty damn tight. Not sure that they will fit.
Check specs but I doubt it with it being a Tarmac!
My wife did say the kickr was a little loud for 5:30am... It's in the garage so the sound must echo round a bit too... Does buying the mat help reduce the noise?
Awesome riding mate!

A mat does make a difference. I found even a piece of old carpet made a big difference (was on tiled floor on concrete with no insulation/padding). A rubber mat, even more so!

I think the general advice is for when you're walking at night - your skin on your face should be quite bright to oncoming traffic, with your eyes reflecting so they have a chance to see you. For the daytime I think common sense should dictate where people walk (not that many of them have that)!

Sense of humour fail? You can't take the names of anything they make seriously, as I said.

Maybe slightly, I just don't agree on jumping on current affairs to flog a few bikes. What's next? The TT 'Shoot & stab' or the CX 'Have a riot in france'.

If they're really that stuck for ideas ask around social media.

Didn't know the Pompino meant that, assumed it was something Italian. Picknflick kinda hints towards a responsive frame... Phaart, well :p

Pickenflick is what you do with bogeys :D

My current pads (Uberbike racematrix) are insanely loud when it's raining. I need to find a decent alternative!

Monstrous rain on this morning's ride, and it was proper windy at the cat and fiddle - had to take the middle of the road to be able to counter the crosswinds.
