As opposed to...?

A do it all bike like the Arkose/Grade/Diverge/Search. They were all way over my budget but I'm thinking that saving up for longer might be better, especially as I'll now be spending half of the summer (at least) in the middle east so I won't be riding anyway.

Eh, you can save and save until the cows come home. Better to get riding as soon as possible. And what, they don't have bikes in the middle east? ;)

How hot is it in the morning first thing?

We get out in summer and it's 15-18c usually, rising to low 30s in the day....

55 I believe it doesn't have Sora its Claris gears.

Claris only came out at the end of 2013 ie on 2014 model bikes, so it can't be Claris, unless the bike is newer than you think or has been upgraded, either of which would only increase the value. Claris is miles better than the 2300 that bike had at stock or sora of that vintage.

Just cracked on with the order for the first part of my bike build. Frame to follow...

Shimano Di2 Ultegra 6870 11 Spd Double Gearset
Shimano Ultegra 11 Spd 6800 Brake Set
KMC X11L Gold 11 Spd Chain
Fizik SL Bar Tape with Fizik Logos Soft Touch Black
Vittoria Corsa CX Tubular Full Black 700x25mm
Velox Jantex Tub Tape (enough for two rims)

There's a reason that they have the tours of Qatar, Dubai and Oman in February and not midsummer ;)

Exactly! Plus I'll be working 6 days a week (probably 7 as soon as things slip) so I wouldn't have time even if it wasn't hot as hell.

I'm just being my usual self. Any purchase over £100 has to come with buyers remorse, that is the rules! :p

@FrenchTart - Riding there and back or there and train back? You're close to Holme Moss, which you could climb from the wrong side of you went on the way or the right side if you ride back again. There's also a cat 2 climb that takes you over the same hill towards Holmfirth called Sky Ride or something on Strava (because of the road name) which you can find if you look at my ride to the tour on 7 July 2014.

Or hey, you could just go the right way up that hill from Denshaw and take it from there ;)

Nice. I'm still in two minds about Di2. As I'm getting the Shimano hydraulic disc brakes the Di2 levers are a fair bit cheaper than the regular ones, which would bring Di2 down to more reasonable levels.

The main thing putting me off is leaving a Di2 bike outside work when I commute...

Ah, I think I've done the Sky Cat2 - very very slowly. It was that ride where I named it using the *cough* awesome fog-related puns.

I think we'd get a train back, at least if we went to Leeds. From one of the closer options we might make it a loop :)

Holme Moss is one I've heard of - I'll check it out.

edit: Going the right way just isn't my style. Or the style of my ability to read maps at least :p

Another day of feeling like cack. Hopefully it won't impact el turbo tonight.

On Saturday I'm thinking of doing this route again but instead of looping back going all the way to Hudderfield, Dewsbury or Leeds. Has anyone done anything similar? Any recommended routes/segments to check out?

I didn't feel great on the commute this morning, -2'C again :/

My furthest journey up North was Altrincham, so no help here :)

Now big question, will I be tempting fate if I take the turbo tyre off my summer bike in time for the weekend :)

First pre-work ride of 2015 this morning.

6am start, 32mi and about 1C in Richmond Park. Doesn't feel like Spring has sprung just yet!

Off to the pool this evening to see if I know how to not drown.

Ah, wonderful Altrincham :p Though actually there seems to have been a lot of redevelopment of late to make it slightly less of a hole.

I don't think you'll win either way with regards to your turbo tyre and summer bike - if you don't take it off it will be blazing sunny weather. So you may as well take it off and resign yourself to riding in the rain :)

Yeah, so was I really, especially given the quite considerable weight difference over SRAM Red 22. But the idea of not having to change gear cables, and an automattically trimming FD seem nice. Plus I'll not be commuting on it so dont have to worry about that.

I'm keeping my Rotor 3d+ cranks so didn't need to order the whole groupset which kept costs reasonable too.

You chose a cold one! Clear night last night meant it got really cold again. I'm betting tomorrow morning will be much warmer!
What time does RP open in the morning?

Ah. I'm coming at it with zero decent components to offset the cost. I do like the look of the Rotor 3d+ stuff but think I'll probably have to stick with standard Ultegra bits to keep the costs down.
