Road Cycling

Also having the upload to TR etc is also a nice motivator as I see lots of workouts people just give up and stop half way through etc. Sounds strange but not looking like a wimp to internet strangers spurs me on

Several of mine where 'give ups' mostly due to running out of time rather than really giving up. One of the reasons I would jump on the turbo was the lack of time commitment to get out for a proper ride!

The banter, advice and experiences of others here and on Strava is really all the motivation I've needed. To be honest without this thread/sub forum on OCUK I probably wouldn't have gotten into road riding! I'm now addicted!

Really enjoying it though, so thanks guys! :D

Is it just me that read the terms?

Probably, so 'free', but not free! ;)

Anyone with experience of maps and loading them onto Garmins?

I'm after European maps on my 810, yet I'm a tight-arse so I've not got any of the official Garmin maps. I've been using the talkytoaster OSM up until now, these only cover the UK. The Standard Garmin maps are ok (considering the 810 isn't really marketed for 'Europe') yet the maps for Rhodes (where I'm going) are very poor with only the major roads marked. I'm guessing this is because Rhodes isn't seen as a cycling destination by many.

I've tracked down these from a google search. They are based off OSM but haven't loaded them onto my 810 yet. I'm not expecting any problems with them, as they're created by someone who lives in Cyprus/Rhodes and obviously wanted some accurate maps! As I'm not really going on a 'cycling' holiday I'll not be going far (and will probably have a normal map too). I'll not be using them for navigation very much, but will report back.

I found this site too which appears to be a database of maps uploaded by people that you can search. Not all maps are free and most seem to be geared towards walking/hiking (topography) rather than cycling.

Looking for local cycling info most of mine I found from google searches leading me to websites and also links to tripadvisor reviews of some of them (the one linked is the most used/reviewed and reads very well, they seem to cater for anything/everyone). I was able to find approx prices from most of them (some by reading reviews when info was missing from websites) and this has lead me to noting where the particular dealer was located as it is in the next village to where I am staying. Their facebook page is great too - seems like the daily excursions they do are photographed and uploaded regularly which is a nice touch. Gives you a good idea of the scenery and road conditions too! :p;)

I know my hotel does 'bike hire' but I shall be comparing the bikes and prices on offer with what I 'know' I can get for €5-€10 a day from the other cycle hire places I've found. The main one I've linked even offers to deliver bikes to your hotel for free if you're hiring for more than 7 days (else €10 charge).

In your face! Here we have glorious British summer weather - rain, gale force winds, crap stewn across the roads that has been blown down by said winds. It's glorious cycling weather.

:(

Yup, classic British 'summer'! Amber/yellow wind warning for the midlands today & tomorrow.

I was going to head out after work yesterday, the rain wasn't too bad but the winds really picked up from about 3pm so slacked it off after the commute home.

Really not gonna miss this weather (I fly to Rhodes tomorrow)! I'll try and bring some sun back for you all! ;)

8 stone. Very nice! How much have you had to spend on new clothes? :p

I'm glad I've not spent loads on expensive cycling gear as I'm now down to 'Medium' in DHB jerseys and purely wearing Large shorts for the girth of my thighs. Now I've found Northwave bibs I'm actually wearing XL but feel I may give L a try.

Normal clothes are a 'problem' for me and I've not even lost 4 stone! (36" waist down to less than 34" now, can get in some 32")!

A small fortune! I've set myself a target weight of 20 stone, I'm 22 stone dead at the minute so I've not gone crazy on a complete new wardrobe yet. I'll see how i feel / look at 20. It sounds like a huge weight and maybe it is, however at 6ft 6" with rugby player build i think that's probably going to be the weight i'll hover around.

Much respect for losing that much mate! Keep it up! :D

You may find similar to me once your body gets used to riding - my weight loss stopped, yet my waist size kept dropping, I put it down to building muscle and losing fat still (muscle mass being heavier than fat). It's still happening and it feels great! Especially now I'm starting to see some ab/torso definition, considering I've done little with my diet or any other exercise. Beach body with no gym, yes please! ;)

Been in Copenhagen for over 3 years on a selection of rust buckets, GF decided to treat me for my cake day and I helped her pick out this:

Very happy with it, will mainly deal with my daily commute (in all weathers, all year round) was missing a few screws for the rear mudguard, will have that sorted soon. Other than that very happy with it, just took some getting used to from hub gears and roller brakes!

Very smart looking ride, I've always loved the styling of the Verenti's, that black with commuting setup looks very professional. Some great setups and spec for the prices you can get them for too! Enjoy and welcome! :)

Ah, nah i've not really loooked / found any. I do a nice little 50 miler down into Notts via the A52 through Beeston, down the ring road at towards Arnold, then down the A614 into Rainworth (stop off and visit the parents) and then back again via stabbo and stanton and home in Sandiacre. There's some nice country side out there.

Thanks! Seemed to be great value with the Sora components and just needed a stand and some lights to make it my daily road warrior, just hope I can get out on some rides that are a bit longer and more exciting!

Yeah I read them, but can we not just make it a buy-one-get-12-free?

Edit: Ah, I see, you can't buy singles any more. Sneakeh :p

Free delivery on orders over £25 loooool.

I'll probably order some endurance packs or something. I find the drink powders and bars more useful than the gels anyway. So they'll persuade me to spend a load of money on stuff by offering me something I don't especially want for free :p

But! FREE! ;)

Kinda gutted I'm going to be away and miss it - one of the few cycling related things I'm interested in with actual 'normal' TV coverage.

Being out the country will mean I can't view on iPlayer/etc without a proxy fiddle... I'll not bother and just look for some YouTube videos, I'll probably find the result from here first! ;)

I'm half expecting him to smash it to pieces, but then half of me wants him to fail miserably as I consider him an over-hyped, over-rated cyclist!

If he gets it I hope he utterly smashes it, rather than just a few meters lol (at least that way it's a proper 'world record' that'll stand for a few years).

Doing my first chain gang tonight! Anyone got any tips other than riding in a predictable manner?

I've never been on one but seeing Strava rides from some of the guys around here - fuel well and take a ton of gels! I saw one a few weeks back with a 27mph average over 60 miles.

Most here are 21-23mph over 40/50 miles (well beyond my abilities currently).

What? Sure he's got a lot of hype behind him, but I don't think you can really call him overrated. He's won something like 6 gold medals, 3 world records and won the TdF, I'd hate to think what it'd take for him to not be overrated :p

He's a beast when it comes to track cycling and TTing, so the hour record should be totally do-able for him.

When someone posted the Power The Hour SiS promotion they asked whether SiS knew something we don't. Now that we've seen the T&Cs and the fact that you actually need to make a purchase to claim your gels, we can surmise that they are fully expecting him to smash it as well, and will be raking it in from people ordering stuff to get their gels.

That was me lol. From what I've read he know's he can smash the current record, but wants to put it so far out of reach that it actually stands for 10years, rather than a matter of days which it has been recently. Fully beleive he's capable given his form when he applies himself to something 100%.

I'd be curious to see whether Tony Martin could do something, given his TT ability, but he hasn't got the track pedigree.

Yeah, I'm planning to go out tonight once it's backed off to a more civilised 18mph

Hopefully it'll be better by the weekend.

Quite amusing on my ride back to work at lunch. You can easily see where I was cycling into the headwind and where I turned round:

Sadly I was a bit knackered by that point so couldn't really take advantage of the tail wind.

Hutch flagged up that London is a pretty slow track, and that the air pressure is looking like it'll be all wrong for Wiggo's effort.

it may not prove to be the demolition that we're expecting. Dowsett has more in the tank too...
