Road Cycling

As a cyclist I am not happy with the rise of camera totting road lawyers. They need to leave policing to the police.

Some cam users definitely come across as massive numpties. However, I absolutely want to get a cam to use in case I have an "accident" cycling. It has happened before and the guy got away with it due to my own naivety and lack of proof/witnesses being unreliable.

:(

PFTH SLEEVES!

Mixed feeling on cam users too. Brilliant for passive use but the various YouTube videos of people being minorly impeded by car drivers then making a meal of it are tedious in the extreme. They're the commuter equivalent of footballers going down too easily and rolling around on the floor.

Someone who thinks it's appropriate to eat cereal while driving deserves to lose their licence though...

Hi guys,

I've not long had my bike back from its first service - done approximately 600 miles on it to date but I'm still not happy with it :(

Just how close should the chain be to my front mech? Because mine is touching and I'm convinced it's that that is causing all the noises I'm getting when I pedal. Is it an easy adjustment?

Thanks.

What ring do you have your chain in on the cassette? You shouldn't have rub (i.e. the chain touching the mech) unless you're running in an inappropriate ring combination, such as big front, big back, small front, small back, etc.

Does your front derailleur move out at all if you pull on it manually? If this has just happened and you're not in an incorrect cog combination it's likely that your cables need adjusting/tightening.

Club APR tonight:

Good group and managed to stay clear of the scratch (just). I sat in a lot on the way out into the wind otherwise i'd have been ****ed off the back early, but felt a bit better on the way in. Ended up 6th just behind the group that split off at the end to contest the sprint.

Kudos to Johnny - looked strong all the way round tonight. I need to find some way not to feel like blowing up in the first 25 mins every time. I seem to take an age to warm up.

Might have looked strong but I did skip a few turns on the way out tonight and had a drink whilst doing so. Same as you I toil at the start till I warm up. Doesn't help when you drive up haha.

Riding hard at the end was a bit daft on my part but **** it :)

Lol, I didn't mean you when I said numpty :p

I know, I don't really do what the guy did and I don't go over the top with it :) I kinda have it for the same intentions that you want one for, and it's also there due to the interest in it really.. I do catch some random things on the road and hey.. it's good to watch them again!

Yeah, the police. All those police. All those police policing the hell out of the roads.

indeed..

Is that in your smallest ring at the front? If so, tighten your lower limit screw.

That's on the smallest ring of the cassette, the one at the bottom. I'm on the bottom chain ring too. Can't you tweak the cable with a twist on the cable thing? - sorry, I'm not an expert, I just ride 'em :D

Don't do that. That's looks like a small small combo.

Anything from the 3rd smallest down is normal to rub. You have a low trim on the front shifter to move the mech a little to stop it.

Had a customer wear through a mech enough for it to crack by not trimming.

I understand that and agree. I guess what worries me is that (and perhaps this is just me, I don't know) recently the amount of violence/aggression directed toward cyclists seems to be on the increase. I imagine part of that might be that more people are using cameras so more incidents are being captured, but otherwise I don't know why some drivers feel the need to give us such a hard time.

I am always concious of my vulnerability when I am on a bike and ride accordingly. I wouldn't dream of becoming involved in some of the confrontations that you can see on YT.

On my ride yesterday my Garmin 500 recorded 2901 ft and my mates 810 recorded 4278 ft! Does make the climbing challenges more difficult!

Yup. Height data is always so dodgy :/ My 810 records far more climbing than those I'm riding with that use a Strava/phone combo.

I'm not sure if it's that aggression is increasing or if it's being reported more/we're becoming more aware of it to be honest. As in, genuinely not sure (not just trying to disagree with you :p).

I've not got into any arguments quite as extreme as those you see in some YT videos but I've certainly had a shouting match with one or two drivers. I do generally commute 20+ miles per day on top of my leisure rides though - and some of that is in the centre of Manchester during rush hour. I guess given the amount of time I spend around irate rush hour drivers I've got off relatively luckily so far.
