Road Cycling

Ugggh....finding it hard to get motivated to get out of bed in the morning and ride to work. Managed it today but have been totally useless these last couple of weeks.

Need to get my mojo back.

120 psi James? Are you on 21mm tyres or something? :p

Rest day today in theory but I am off in the afternoon. Kind of need to fix up my PC but y'know..sunshine..only slightly dead legs.... tempting.

Had a low speed collision with a van last night - not really the driver's fault as he had to emergency stop for someone randomly pulling out and it happened to be not long after a small descent...and I misjudged my brakes. Fun times.

Great preparation for my TT last night, power meter not working, and trying to get it working 3 minutes before my start time, then lining up for the start and my chain came off, not once but 3 times! :P

After work ride (extended commute!) last night.

Not sure why but my legs were not feeling it, I noshed a gel after the Golf course (big climb) which I really struggled up Check the great graph of my HR flying up, speed dropping, cadence struggling and then me having to stop lol, you can even just make out my lowest gear changes. There was a great stretch of road after Westhope, 4 miles with almost perfect road surface (only one dodgy part crossing a dual carriageway). In between Marden and Sutton my higher gears started to play up, getting significant chain rub and I couldn't quite determine it at the side of the road. I decided to cut my planned route short and cut back through town so I didn't miss my dinner, handily my Garmin decided to die part way through so lost ~3 miles or so at the end.

well, it's sideways for one and that'd be difficult to fit on my head ha

now to measure my melon

I have melon size related problems too, none of the 'one size fits all' cycling caps fit me and I have to try on XL helmets as some of them are too small too...

So yeah, it's a bargain, but it's not the Di2 you're thinking of.

Thanks for clearing that up mate, had guessed there was a reason!

Glad to hear nothing major mate, hope the van driver was understanding!

Did I see in the pro thread that you're changing jobs? Whereabouts will you be working in the future? You going to be able to commute by bike for the next job?

I can't I'm afraid. Doing my second session at Herne Hill and then going for a pootle around RP with a (slow) friend.

Forecast looks perfect for it though.

been trying to trace down a creak/click in my bottom bracket area for a few weeks now, had it all apart a couple of times, cleaned, greased, chased, faced, you name it.

rode the bike up and down my street in trainers to test some other stuff last night.... no creaks or clicks

this morning I sprayed some GT85 on my cleats and on the pedals, rode to work. Perfect.

gahhhhhh

Always the simplest things...

I have a click that comes and goes on my bike at the moment. I thought it was the saddle as it stops when I stand up, but I've cleaned and greased the saddle rails and it's still there. I might try taking the seatpost out next and see whether that needs cleaning. I don't think it's drivetrain related as it comes and goes and it's not a regular thing like once per turn of the pedals or turn of the wheels. It's driving me nuts. I might replace the BB sometime soon, see if that fixes it.

Flew into work today - it's all about that average speed. I had some good lights / junctions at the start and got to 18+mph average which motivates massively :) Didn't maintain it but still made very good time. My power meter helps too to make me realise when I'm coasting (but still doing what on the face of it is a good speed). Still got dropped like a stone by a female on the flat - I was doing 20mph and she went past like I wasn't moving! Turns out she competed in the National 100mile TT champtionship recently which made me feel a little better :D

Must get into the drops more too - it is so much faster. It's odd - I don't feel uncomfortable down there in terms of aches etc but I just naturally want to move back to the hoods. Muscle memory I guess and the solution is probably just simple ride more in the drops.

'chased', 'faced'? I've got a creak starting and a strip/clean/grease of my BB hasn't resolved it. Seem to be getting more grind when really pushing as well as the chain rub I've always suffered from in higher gears (much worse after last nights ride!). The grind I get is always in the same part of the pedal stroke, anything else that would be apart from BB? (it's carried across chain change, pedal change and cleat change).

I've always put much of my noises down to the BB90, almost at the stage of getting it replaced/upgraded at my LBS, just don't want to be without my bike as loving it atm!:(

Mine is a 'Shimano Press Fit', part of the 'Powercore Oversized bottom bracket' and I'm only calling it a BB90 from reading around online. Is there an easy way to tell? Ideally I want to identify it so I can research what upgrade options I have rather than just replacing it with another the same (and seeing the same issues)... Would be nice if Ultegra cranks were an option as I would like to eventually upgrade my groupset (as currently I have no green light on a new bike purchase :()

Just a heads up - last time I sprayed my cleats and pedals with GT85 I lost a cleat bolt the next big ride...

Last time I had those symptoms it was where the saddle rail went into the plastic part of the saddle. Dribbled a bit of light oil in the gap and perfecto... no more clicks, creaks or cracks.

Had a decent little ride last night, was thinking that I had got back into the swing of things after 5 weeks off and then pulled my leg big style stepping into the shower

Or slam your stem so much that your hoods are as low as your drops currently!:D

'chased', 'faced'?

chasing is the process of running a tap through the threadsto ensure they are clean and even. Facing using a bladed tool to ensure the outside faces of the shell are completely flat and square to each other

chasing won't make a lot of difference except to how easy getting the BB in and out is, but a well faced shell ensures the bearings are accurately aligned, increasing their lifespan and reducing the chance that a slight offset is causing any noises
