Road Cycling

Got knocked of my bike this morning by a motorbike that tried to overtake me as I was turning right - spent hours in the hospital getting xrayed and getting my road rash cleaned up. Just cleaned my bike to give it a checkup, and apart from a few minor scuffs on the pedals and the shifters being scratched and bent inwards, the bike looks absolutely fine! Amazed tbh, I had assumed it would be a write off. My body must have taken the brunt of the collision, as the carbon frame-set doesn't have even the slightest scratch :)

As I said on gtalk I'd personally be quite worried about the frame even if it appears fine.

Also, you totally need to pursue this with the motorist.

'chased', 'faced'? I've got a creak starting and a strip/clean/grease of my BB hasn't resolved it. Seem to be getting more grind when really pushing as well as the chain rub I've always suffered from in higher gears (much worse after last nights ride!). The grind I get is always in the same part of the pedal stroke, anything else that would be apart from BB? (it's carried across chain change, pedal change and cleat change).

I've always put much of my noises down to the BB90, almost at the stage of getting it replaced/upgraded at my LBS, just don't want to be without my bike as loving it atm!:(

Mine is a 'Shimano Press Fit', part of the 'Powercore Oversized bottom bracket' and I'm only calling it a BB90 from reading around online. Is there an easy way to tell? Ideally I want to identify it so I can research what upgrade options I have rather than just replacing it with another the same (and seeing the same issues)... Would be nice if Ultegra cranks were an option as I would like to eventually upgrade my groupset (as currently I have no green light on a new bike purchase :()

I have a Giant with a BB86 pressfit bottom bracket. Exact same symptoms as you, ended up with a loud click every pedal revolution at the same point in the crank revolution.

LBS are replacing it tomorrow, surprisingly they said it would be under warranty, even though the bike is now about 15 months old (although it is on its third frame already, all warranty replacements...). I have a feeling the frame replacements contributed to the BB issues as they used the same BB each time, apparently pressfit BBs don't like being reinstalled too many times (?).

On mine I could replicate the click/creak by grabbing hold of the cranks and pushing/pulling them in the same direction with a fair bit of force.

If it's a Shimano BB I can't see why it wouldn't work with any of the Hollowtech 2 chainsets, so 105, ultegra etc. chainsets should be fine I think.

Bb90 is a trek standard where the bearings are pressed into the frame.

Shimano press fit bb have a plastic sleave which houses the bearings. Have fitted plenty of bb9241b with grease and it has cured creaking. Press one side in at a time to avoid cracking the tube that connects the two sides.

And how long until your 4-6 weeks are up? Your muscle can't repair while it's being use/abused more! ;)

The pain you're getting (if it's similar to mine) is from the muscle/tendon stretching down the outside of your foot and getting compressed with each pedal stroke. You may have experienced it more when riding hard, climbing lots and from pushing up the mileage.

Have you checked to see if you're a duck/pigeon (duck-footed/pigeon-toed) and all the other things like dangling your legs over a table edge and checking your feet relaxed position? That can quite quickly show you which way your foot would be more comfortable (so which way to adjust your cleats).

Obviously the foot cycling through the pedal stroke is totally different to being relaxed/walking, what you're ideally looking for is the most comfortable position with your metatarsals and the 'ball' of your foot directly above the pedal axle and then adjusting angle etc from there.

Source.

Im about 1 week in, i cant wait around i hate it, gonna give next week a miss then see how i am after that. Cant wait around much longer i need to help it along :)

I find my feet hurt on longer rides, climbing is fine because i dont have a choice over that one and i ride hard most days. So i think its the longer rides in general that cause it to hurt, and weirdly it only hurts when i do anything over 20 mile.

If i push my feet forwards in my shoes whilst theyre on the pedals i find it eases the pain a bit before my feet settle back into their natural position in the shoe.

I do need to look at how to set these up properly as i just threw them on and hoped for the best and got kind of lucky haha.

Thank you for the information and the link ill look at it in more detail tomorrow/monday when i alter them, i think then i just need to get off the bike mid commute and alter them if need be and see if it makes a difference.

Bit difficault as it hurts my leg trying to unclip at the moment and my ankle seems to be a bit weak under the part of my calf that hurts. Feels like its gonna snap when i try unclip.

Very odd.

First piece of castelli clothing. I feel like such a pro.

xD

xD

Two things to consider. Loosen the tension on your pedals. Unclipping shouldn't require any effort. Shimano pedals have adjustable tension.

YOu might consider getting some Specialized insoles. Depending on how high your arches are they have various levels of support. I use the green ones as I have quite high arches. Stops pain on outside of foot or arch.

Just gave the bike a nice clean and new handlebar tape. My OCD is too great for handlebar tape, if it's not identical each side it drives me nuts! :p
