Bought a Garmin 810 and tried it out yesterday. I went out and did a 30 mile route I've done before and noticed the Garmin unit recorded half the altitude gained compared with my phone using Endomondo, 1530ft compared with 2960ft. I don't know which is right, not sure I care that much, just thought they should tie up better than that.

Secondly, I uploaded my Garmin data up onto connect and have it linked to Strava. The data sent to Strava seems slightly different from the Garmin connect, pretty odd considering the Strava data comes from Garmin. Anyone know what's going on?

both take the same raw GPS data and process them in different ways, they manage stops etc differently

I did much the same route last year on my proper geared bike and only averaged 16.1mph compared to 16.7mph on the single speed today. I swear that bike is magic.

there's no hiding place on an SS. You may have sat back and spun up those "little bumps" on your geared, you didn't do that on your SS

+1 on the silly wind. Was getting hacked off with it on my ride when I got caught by a group of 10 to 12 riders. Tagged on with them for a few miles and it was an utter pleasure to have some shelter.

I'd gone out in a mid-weight long sleeve jersey. Needed in places to keep the wind chill off but I was cooking a bit in others. I like the idea of a short sleeve jersey which is windproof on the front, though it seems the choice is either a Gabba or Gore Oyxgen.

It's awesome when you get to tag along with a large group randomly (assuming they're a friendly bunch :p). Especially so on long rides or in weather like yesterday's wind. I'm probably not heading out today given the forecast rain but it sounds like the wind is already picking up. Bleh.

I've added you actually - I sometimes ride around that area so we'll have to meet up one day :)

Good work. I've just been out and done a metric century to Jodrell Bank and back. Very flat, but that was deliberate as I was on my single speed bike. I'd wanted to challenge myself to see if I could do it and I could indeed. It's a pretty flat route but the little bumps here and there were tricky.

I thought of you and Physichull as we were riding out actually. If we do the route again (which I reckon we will, minus the return via the Trafford Centre part) I'll let you know - if you fancied it I'm sure it'd be pretty easy to join about 15-20 miles in and leave off at the same kind of distance?

Good work on the SS ride. I agree with Saytan (not that I've ridden SS outside of a couple of track sessions) with regards to your improvements. Though I'm sure you've got fitter too as you've been out a fair bit lately. Do you ever monitor HR? I find it interesting to look at it after a ride sometimes to get an idea of how hard I was pushing/taking it easy.

Ah, I wondered who the request was from. They seemed a good bunch and I had a quick chat with a couple of, plus thanked them for the tow when they turned off. Have to love Strava Flybys for cyber-stalking other riders :D

OMS & Ted - thanks for the tip on the Craft Elite - will have a look around for that. I've also spotted that Prendas do some Craft base layers which have a Windstopper front, though sizing choices are limited at the moment (will ask if they are getting more for autumn / winter). Gives me another option to explore.

Count me in.

Anyone used Ubyk.co.uk? I'm thinking of buying the Cinelli Neo Morphe XL (well can't decide between this and the normal Neo carbon bars), and they have it in the 40cm size I want.

Rounded off the head of the pad retention bolt on my TRP Spyres today. Annoyed is an understatement, entirely my fault. For some reason I decided it needed to be nice and tight and way overdid it. Followed that up by almost doing the same to a bolt on my car cycle rack when I slipped when tightening it up. Gave up doing anything else that requires even the smallest bit of thought/concentration for the rest of today as I'm clearly having a brain-free day.

On that note, anyone fancy sharing their own workshop mishaps in an attempt to make me feel a little better? :p

Right, so I just did a quick 10 miles whilst the rain had stopped and I think I need some new tyres :D

Several very hairy moments, fortunately on quiet, but well maintained country roads. It was mainly my grip on the road, it didn't feel like I ever had any... also cornering was very iffy. I realise the roads were I bit greasy after all the rain but I still didn't feel safe. The tyres I've got now are the Schwalbe one's that came with my bike. I've done about 600 miles on them - since April.

I don't really have a budget, not when it comes to safety. But I'd like to hear your suggestions. Also, what's all this folding tyre business, does it just mean you can fold them down? Please forgive my ignorance...

foldable are normally lighter because they don't have the wire to keep the tyre "shape" doesn't really many any difference when you put them on ! :)

grippy tyres -;

michelin pro4's - endurance/grip versions
Continental Grand Prix 4000S - haven't personally tried them but lots of good feedback.

Your tyres are unlikely to be worn out after 600 miles.

No, not saying they're worn out, just don't think they liked the damp roads... they're Lugano's btw.

I'm looking at the Grand Prix 4000S II Conti's, they seem the business!
