Thanks Roady, thing I forgot to mention was grease to use, any recommendations on that, Muc-Off seems to be highly recommended or should any old stuff to the trick?

That's a crazy-low peak. Mine rests at ~45, and peaks at ~187 when I'm fully sprinting.

maybe I'm not pushing hard enough? ;) but even the gym machines with HR monitors never go over 150 with me whereas my mate, brother etc can max out at 180-185.. :o

It seems a bit low but different people just have different max HR.
Max HR isnt related to fitness - it wont come down as you get fitter like resting HR does. It's just down to your body/genetics.

My max is around 182 and I would aim for 164-166 for a hard 10 mile ride - so around 90% of max. Which is similar to your 120-130 range with a max of 145.

~185 is balls-to-the-walls for me. Last time I sustained that for a very short time at the end of a 10k race I was very close to being sick!

Right so, my bottom bracket/crank is creaking as I'm cycling, every revolution or when I'm out the saddle it's groaning at me which is becoming a bit annoying. So going to service my bike properly this weekend re greasing and taking some of it apart to try find the culprit!

This has lead to me needing some parts & better gear to get it done properly so have formulated a nice shopping list for what I need which I may need some advice on;

*snip*

Any assistance or opinions on the above would be great! :)
Got around £300+ to spend across the items.

Nice to see you here Reaper.

Most of that is looking good! Personally I use the Finish Line lube, both wet and dry. Its good to see you getting all the bits and pieces yourself, not only is it fun to tinker with your bike, but eventually in the long run it does save you cash!

Depends how often you want to apply it, and how much you care about having a dirty drivetrain. If you do a five minute wash after every ride then WD40 is probably your best bet, otherwise if you just want to do it every few weeks then any degreaser and probably some sort of wet lube in the UK, Finish Line, Muc-Off, Weldtite, whatever, they're all a much of muchness really. They work for keeping things running smoothly and preventing rust but man do they pick up dirt like nothing else. I swear, i can spend hours getting my chain clean but after 20 minutes on the road with wet lube it'll be black as sin, no matter what i do. Other than that, i've heard some promising things about paraffin wax but that's a bit more involved.

My HR doesn't seem to get too high when cycling either, maybe 165 max but i don't worry about it too much, especially when on the bike i'm mostly going for endurance rather than all out efforts at the end of which i won't be sure whether i can make it home :p

Hey :D

Yes, I'd rather be doing it myself - My knowledge on bikes is weak compared to computers so I'd rather learn by jumping in the deep end myself instead of a LBS doing it for me. Plus in the future when I'm stranded on the side of the road, I'll know what to do.... hopefully. :p

Have ordered some stuff from Planet X, will order some from Wiggle and stop by Evans to get some grease as it seemed to be the cheapest.

It's great fun! :D

cyclist/driver rage video lol ;)

xD fantastic! Welcome back :D

You're welcome to it mate as I don't use it anymore (found it too bulky on my bars) and picked it up in a Wiggle sale anyways, just throw me a few quid for a beer (& to cover postage) ;)

That would be grand buddy!

I use the copper grease that I use on cars on my bikes too and never have any issues.

Just any old copper grease will do the trick. Go to B&Q it'll only be a few quid for a decent size tin that'll last you year's.

been tracking my HR the past few days, not on strava tho.

but my resting sits at 55bpm and maxes out at 145 while cycling - normally around 120-130bpm.

seems to be quite good.

Good ranges although quite low max as you're younger than me I think (35)?

My resting is around 60/65 (only done it a couple of times ages ago, should do again). I'm quite high on the bike, 150 for endurance, 150-160 for most commuting with pushing myself anything up to 185. I've seen north of 190 a few times (mostly turbo) but can't really sustain much over 180 when sprinting.

Pushing hard on fast group rides I find my HR around 180 and struggle to get it below 170 for the first 10 miles or so... I've not popped recently but usually find north of 180 I feel 'bonkish' so quite an incentive to get it down. :o

Longer rides once I'm knackered I find my averages really low 130-150 bpm. Can't seem to get to those ranges without 20-30 miles in my legs.

I'm using some 'Lithrium' Grease from CRC, I'll find you a link later if you wish? It's pink in a white tube and there was a deal with a grease gun...

If you do a five minute wash after every ride then WD40 is probably your best bet

WD40 is dodgy if riding in the wet and not cleaning your chain after every use! Will increase wear...

My max is about 190, give or take. My heart rate is always high when I'm riding, though, which is a concern, as I'm always maxing it if I'm going at anything like a high speed. I need to do some proper interval work to get my body to operate better at lower heart rates.

From what i hear it's absolutely fine in the wet as long as you do reapply after every ride and don't use any sort of specialised degreaser.

I've seen the video before mate - for me the concern is WD40's penetrating abilities, the water displacement is a good thing but the oil and lube within the actual chain links is usually original lube placed there from manufacture, soaking the chain in degreaser is the only real way that much of it is removed. The majority of chain cleaners and wiping won't move much of the links internal lube. WD40 penetrating this and leaving parts of it's own cheap generic lubricant there (when nobody is really sure what lubricant is contained in WD40, it's a closely guarded secret) would worry me. I'd rather a lubricant designed for the purpose to be there.

Is that why I'm finding the latter parts of longer rides my HR is significantly lower than the starts/shorter rides? Is it really that much of a concern?

Just about to set off for Boston. Zomgzzz....so early.

Enjoy & have fun!

I have a confession to make... I utterly buried myself on my commute in this morning in an attempt to break a 18mph average for grudas (that guy...)! Utterly utterly hanging by the time I got to work, any time my garmin speedo dropped below 30 kmph on the flat I dug deeper (grudas' words 'keep pushing' ringing in my ears). Any time below 28 kmph on the climbs I stood and pushed or pushed harder.

Result... Slowest commute of the 3 I've done this week (going the same route). WTF! I blame the cool headwind and the couple of slow stops.:(

05/08/15: 15:05 @17.7mph. Average HR 162bpm
06/08/15: 14:46 @17.4mph. Average HR 167bpm
07/08/15: 15:09 @17.2mph. Average HR 170bpm

Worst check out my Strava segment post ever. :p

pfth :D not even ;)
