The cake is a lie! :(

Saddle height, talk to me folks.

Took my new bike for a spin yesterday after making some adjustments, I measured the saddle height of my currently bike which was 720mm from the bottom bracket. However on the Cervelo I can only get the saddle down to 740mm from the BB, this is the seat post slammed.

Now, I can cut about 10mm off the seat post to it's minimum (rather not as I lack the tools) which brings me down to 730mm from the BB or do I look at buying a short seat post?

Or, (where I lack understanding on how my legs should work) if I was to buy a shorter crank i.e. 170mm and run the saddleat 745mm, this should work the same and thus put me into a more aero position, no?

Shorter cranks may be one option. Personally, I'd go for a shorter post first; what brand/model is in there now?

True a fit is a starting point, but like these new fangled professional photographers with DSLRs everyone is a pro these days. You need to ensure you're using a respected and recommended fitter to get a good base, and actually your position will change as you become stronger on the bike. (Able to hold a lower position etc)

You are totally right, I went to a highly recommended fitter in my area. I also don't expect them to get it right on just one visit so what I am currently doing is a bit of testing. I had two bikes done on the fit so this lets me rule between fit and saddle for the pain. Once I have this I am going to contact the fitter again and go from there. So how I see it the process is a bit of an iterative process as the fitter made his initial changes to me, but of course this might bring up a new problem. I would say he did tell me to contact him if I have any problems so I am not worrying yet, I just wanted to make sure I had enough information for him to work from.

As a bit of an update I went on the turbo last night with my winter bike and it felt better for comfort on the saddle, that's the problem I had a fit on a new bike (only used it 3 times and it is a new saddle to me!). Tonight I am riding Mallory Park with the Propel, I have had a feel round on the turbo and I don't think my sit bones were correctly on the saddle. So I have moved the saddle forward 5mm to confirm whether it is purely the shape of the saddle causing the issues.

Heehee, got a PR on my commute in this morning on a stretch of road where I made a point of absolutely obliterating some guy wearing baggy shorts on a road bike. He had no bar plugs either. Not cool, dude, not cool.

If it was me I would firstly cut down/buy a new seatpost to give you that additional 10mm. Then you will only be 10mm out from where you want to be, then could you get some cleat spacers so reduce the difference further. A quick look seems like the most you would want to do is 5mm with that. You could always then drop 5/7.5mm on the crank length to get it exact if you really need it?

I guess you could trial this by increasing the other bikes saddle by 5mm and see if this gives you any rocking issues? Sorry I don't know the full story on this one so by all means ignore me if you are already at your max height!

I wonder if there are seat posts that hold a saddle lower at all? Just thinking out loud here but I wonder if zero offset seatposts have a shorter vertical distance between the saddle rail and seatpost tube.

Edit - If you run 175mm cranks now and swap to a 170mm crank you would need to raise your saddle 5mm to keep the same maximum leg angle.

If it's already booked and you're going to lose money anyway just go and see how it is? Might be worth watching anyway!

I need to start doing the same early mornings. That was the plan this morning but I woke up feeling too tired. (wimp)

I'm only losing money on the ride itself, so it's not too bad. I think it was only £25 or so. Hotel was booked, but I can cancel it without losing money (took the option to cancel as we've been busy at work anyway). The guy I'm going with said not to worry about the ferry cost.

The ride has a proper name and number per rider, so it's a bit of a bummer. Without riding it, I'd rather save my pennies for other bike stuff now :p;) Closer to a Power2Max :o:D

There's a minimum line, but there would be at least 170mm+ of tube inserted into the frame still so assume it would be OK.

It's carbon though and feel like I should be playing the rules with it. :p
The frame and seatpost are both carbon (I think?) and I know which I'd prefer to cut! :o

CUT THE FRAME!
If that's the case, then saw away my friend.

:eek::p

Right so it's probably my understanding that is the problem regarding the minimum line I saw (the Cervelo manual wasn't the greatest tbh, more like I'm an idiot?) and thought that there would be enough tube in the frame for it to not be a problem.

The seatpost is their Aero one, believe the one linked is fairly close to it. I'm also running 172.5mm cranks at the moment.

I think now that my understanding is better, it'll be best to shave 20mm off the seatpost, I always thought I had longish legs! :p Guy I bought it off was running it at 790mm and he wasn't taller than me!

I will add I didn't rock when pedalling (although I could feel like my hips wanted to) at 740mm so I'm not too bad, but I definitely couldn't get my heel onto the pedal it was floating just above.

Went for a ride today with my new Adjustable stem, set at 40 degrees
I may look silly
I may feel silly

but it certainly helped my back :)

Spoke to the Doctor today, and they are referring my back to the Muscletal , but not for phisio this time, looks like im getting an injection into the base of my spine

It's better to look and feel silly while being able to ride your bike while suffering with a back problem, than have it sit in the garage hoping you will be able to ride it again without pain, or flogging it.;)

Rubbish, buy a load of Rapha and learn how to stand by your bike!
