Road Cycling

Steady ride this morning, winter is coming, needed my arm warmers until 9!
Legs weren't really there. Gonna try smash the club run tomorrow.

Got all next week off so going to try get some big miles in! Hope the weather stays good!

Watched this last night. Pretty impressive feat, even if he was a little irritatingly positive and a little bit loopy. Guess you have to be.

Must say his decision to use a bamboo bicycle that turned out to have wonky head, top and down tubes and a BB so wide he could only fit 1 front ring and stays so narrow only 9 cassette rings, was a bit of an oversight.

As was riding it for the first time being the start of a 3,200 mile slog :o

Went out for the easy paced café intro club ride today given the forecasted heavy rain so opted to use my single speed given the good mudguard coverage. Good ride, but very wet from start to finish. Got a puncture aswell which wasn't any fun.

Sat quietly watching the Vuelta when I heard this massive pop/bang somewhere in the house. Completely confused as to what it was, maybe a bulb going but it was too loud for that. Spent ages looking for what it could have been then noticed the tyre was half hanging over the rim of my single speed.

The tube seemingly spontaneously popped along the seam/join and blew the tyre off the rim! It wasn't overinflated, if anything it was underinflated. Can't really believe it. Never seen anything like it.

I've got a tyre that keeps doing that. Really annoying. It's fine if I'm riding it but if I leave it in the sun it'll lift the bead off the rim and there's a huge explosion. Did it right in front of my face the first time and deafened me! I think the 'clincher' part of the tyre isn't a very good shape for the rims.

Had this happen before when my pump gauge failed, so was giving inaccurate readings and thus overinflating blew about 3 tubes before realising what was going on.

The chainring bolts on my single speed bike are a bit loose. Do I need to buy the proper tool for holding the back of them to tighten them, or can I improvise with a bigass screwdriver or something?

I'm hoping that tightening them will stop whatever is clonking on that bike. It's been making a racket since I pulled the wheel back a bit to take up the slack in the chain. It's not worn enough to replace yet, but it does need tightening from time to time.

I've only had to resort to the tool once so you'll probably get away without it - and it didn't really help that much anyway. A clonk sounds like it might be something else though.

Off out to take in some local hills (Blaze, Pyms (proper) and Goyt). Feeling a bit run down so I think I'll take it easy. Also cycling with a friend that is a bit out of practice so another excuse for my hill times ;)

Huzzah for proper Pyms  ... take easy except for Pyms? :p

Pretty windy out today

Dark lenses making it look gloomier than it was but still a bit nippy and I struggled for about the first 90 minutes to really get in to it, which is strange as usually after 5 minutes I'm in the groove. Gloves, arm warmers and a cap. I'm cautious when being quite so wrapped up as I find I sweat more without realising and can suffer cramps if I don't hydrate properly. Summer jersey & bibs ofc :o Legs felt quite heavy, oddly, more likely they were just chilly.

Still happy enough to knock almost a minute off Aston Hill and not put in a bad time up Chinnor Hill (looks at Kimi :p) as I was taking it pretty easy and just scoping it out as I've come down it loads but never gone up... Had planned to do the top of Kop Hill but wanted to put in a good effort up the 'other' Aston Hill towards Tring and the thought of a 6 minute effort culminating in 20%+ having already come up Small Dean Lane was enough to put me off :p

Actually crossed paths with a sportive (Possibly an 'ABF' organised do? What a rider answered when I queried :/) but thankfully they stuck to the main road rather than off the beaten track. It reminded me (not trying to sound elitist) but how slow & dangerous other riders can be not to mention unpredictable. I gave them all a wide birth as a result.

Found 600 calories with over half coming from fat to be sufficient to get me round without any performance drops. I've been slowly increasing the amount of fat consumed on rides the last 2 months or so and also fueling with that first and then carbs later. So it wasn't until around 2h45m that I stuffed some Soreen in

Did spot quite a deep cut in my front tyre and a slight bulge as a result. Right in the middle of the tread. Is it possible to 'plug' bicycle tyres in a similar fashion to car tyres or is it going to have to go in the bin/turbo with less than 300 miles? :(

*Haven't had a chance to look at the rear brake rub under tension yet Roady but it's on my to-do :) *

Just at a cafe stop... Did go for it a bit on Pym's but PM battery ran out before that and my HRM was playing up - pretty sure my HR was higher than 100 whilst I was sweating/crying up there :p

Ride should be done in about an hour so will be interesting to see the time. Could've gone harder and on a good day a lot faster I reckon /getting the excuses in yo

Yeah, I'd expect chainring bolts to be more of a creak. I think it's coming from the sprocket or the chain, so maybe it is time to replace them.
