Road Cycling

Another day, another impatient twerp close passing and swearing when I shake my head at him... All because I had the nerve to get into the right hand lane to... um... turn right.

Bloody hell Von, you are so inconsiderate :p

Had my first ride in a month (bar a couple of short pitch black rides on the hybrid) today. I wasn't exactly hitting PRs but the legs are still there, just! Just under 20 miles so we'll see if they are still up to some proper distance over the next few days.

tubeless tyres are supposed to make your life easier right?

I've just spent longer and had more hassle trying to inflate one that wouldn't seat than i've spent on all punctures this year, and it's still not inflated :(

I guess some wheels are easier to set up than others.

Mine took about 1 hour for both.

Be worth it in the end. :)

However, I did fit tubes in them overnight before setting them up.

Hear some rim & tyre combo's are better than others! Saw quite a bit about it on STW when I was reading up on things.

Ross: Couple of frameset options from Genesis now and a good read/writeup on their 2017 range with some very affordable commuter options rim & disc.

Also Cervelo S3 Disc. *drool*

Maybe it'll be affordable by the time I'm allowed another bike... ;)

It might sound stupid but give this place a go http://www.physioclinic.net .

Promotes bone growth a few of my motorbike friends have used it with very very positive results. Only reason I didn't use them when I broke my leg was because I physically couldn't get there.

Thanks for that. Bit far for me but I could look at a more local place :)

I did briefly read about standing on a rumble strip for 20 mins per day to encourage growth/speed recovery. Need to read more to find out if that is rubbish or not :)

Can someone give me a little help with changing my bottom bracket on my Giant Defy. It's the one in the link here.

Giant Defy 3 2013

My mate is selling me his old Tiagra 10 speed groupset but I'm unsure as to what size BB I need and which tool I'll need to remove my current BB. From a little reading I think I need a HollowTech II 68mm BB?

And need to double check with him but I'm pretty sure it's this chainset.

Tiagra 4650 Chainset

Cheers

Sorry to hear about your accident FT, best of luck with the recovery. :)

according to those specs it's a threaded BB shell, so you should need

or a similar unit from higher up the range

So am I right in thinking this one will be suitable?

Ultegra Bottom Bracket

And which tool do I need to remove my currenty bottom bracket?

What tools do you currently have? You need to confirm your mates Tiagra is HTII as if it isn't you'd need a different BB and tools. What bike/model/year is it from? BB's can be an utter minefield as there are so many different standards, thankfully your Giant being square taper it does give you options on non-press-fit BB's (generally cheaper tool wise, with less faff and more compatibility).

I was able to remove the tapered BB (like yours) from my old Carrera using basic tools from a basic PX kit (basically using one of these).

To fit the threaded HT BB you'll need a special spanner, some other tools have it as one end of another tool (my PX kit has it as one end of the chain whip, the one linked before/current does not). I've no idea if your Giant is English or Italian threaded (probably English), but always best to have a google around checking forums for people doing the same thing on the same frame/year to get an idea of any pitfalls/issues in advance.

With the cost of tools (and how much time you you have & want to learn!) it would probably work out cheaper to get your LBS to change it (certainly would if it was press-fit - like mine on my Defy 1 2015!).

Hi guys,

Right this will probably sound ridiculous as I am posting in a road cycling thread but here goes!

I am totally new to this and know nothing about cycling really. I would like to get a bit more active and this seems a perfect way of doing it. My concern is cycling on busy roads etc, is this something I would need to get over? Or do you guys also cycle on quiet roads?

I'm quite close to the chilterns so that would seem like a nice place to cycle. What do you guys think?

Thanks :)

Chilterns is pretty good for cycling. You'll get used to cycling with traffic as time goes by... just expect anyone to do anything and nothing will be too surprising!

Unless you're living in the middle of a city then you are not going to be far away from quiet roads. You will be surprised how many small and quiet roads there are. But contact with busier roads is inevitable unfortunately. It is something you will get used to though.
