Road Cycling

To be honest, I'd never even considered them. I've been out of the bike building business for so long I don't know anyhting about them.

Thats quite a cracking price though...they only seem to do discs though according to their website.

The new DI2 is 12 speed isn't it? Not that I'm sure I care whether or not I have 11 speed or 12 speed..
yeah :) may also be worth considering 1x grouppos ? I actually really like mine.

all in, if anyone cares, a couple hundred K done - a lot for me. On my new adventure bike with srams apex AXS 1x groupset and my view is :

enough gears for all bits of riding
drops between cogs are much more "noticeable" compared to say 2x rival
may be harder to find the "right" gear but it's also much easier to not think about the front
can still get fast enough, 50-60K/h is not uncomfortable.
the big dinner plate cogs at the back are big enough to climb up some steep inclines and funny enough I've had a few PR's on the local roads with this bike.

I suppose con wise :

it's not as "smooth" between gears
it may be harder to find the right gear
the top end is not there, can pedal it out if you try down a decline

So on way home I broke my new chain. Maybe the link wasn't put back In properly . The quick link is fine.. but one of the main links was not

Had to walk a few Kms back home. Ill see if I can repair it somehow. If not then I'll have to order another chain or put my old on back on

Would rather not use an old chain

Im not having much luck here

You broke it? Have you touched any other links or just shortened it and attached quiklink in the same spot ?

Basically what happened is when I was shortening my new chain I used a tool my mate had in work . It's like a wind up tool which pushes the pin out

Anyway..cut a long story short I threaded his tool meaning the pin was most of the way back in after shortening it but I had to use the socket / screw driver and hammer method to push the pin in the rest of the way.

This worked fine for about 20km so far, went home from what work on the bike. Has to stop at eurocarparts to get some car polish and got on the bike..took a few pedals and the link broken.

I'm going on to see if I can salvage in abit

If not. Then I need a new tool which I owe my work mate anyway and a new chain

I may have just salvaged the new chain I hopefully have fixed the link. Probably need to find out after about 20 Kms

You did what? You use that tool to push the pin out, to remove the end of the chain to shorten it, then use quick links to reconnect it on the bike. When and why are you pushing a pin in? Or, your saying the pin in the tool? In which case, how did the chain snap when riding?

You are a menace

Going to take away your tool!

If you snapped your chain then its unlikely to have snapped without damaging any of the links. You might be very lucky. Where did you buy the chain from BTW?

how's everyone.
havent't been here for a while again...
have pulled tendon/ligaments in my leg and been struggling to get it sorted...been 6 weeks now i think.. can walk up the stairs no probs but walking down them is a different matter...

The chain I purchased was a brand new shimarno CN-53 chain 116 links

I had to measure it to my old worn chain and remove around 6 links which I did . I used the below tool to do this

As I was initially winding the pin out I didn't realise that you were only supposed to wind it back to a certain point i thought the pin came all the way out.. hence I was putting pressure on the winding tool which ended up threading the tool abit layer on ..

When I put the chain back together that's when I discovered the tool would then become useless to me but it had pushed the pin back in a little way..

So to sort this I layed the again over a socket..got a thin star screwdriver and a hammer and whacked the link back in to position

This is when I then put it back on the bike using the quick links

It was riding ok has indexing issues but eventually got it to a point where is riding but was skipping slightly on two gears..

Then that happened.

Iv sorted it and hopefully the link should hold now , I have reindexed again which seems ok but a little clicking and sometime a little jumpy on first two biggest cogs at the rear . The rest seem fine

Ill have to work out why they skip slightly on the top as if I mess with the indexing again it will make it worse

I just can't see the point of 1x for road/gravel. I have zero issue with a front derailleur and the only real reason I wouldn't have on on MTB is because there is little benefit vs the downsides. I have a gravel bike with an 11 speed SRAM mechanical and I really dislike the bigger gaps. If I end up using that bike more I will definitely put a 2x groupset on it. Trouble is, its electronic only frameset and I don't want to pony up the money for shimano di2 GRX and I haven't a bloody clue what on earth I would be looking for with SRAM because their naming conventions are shockingly awful. How on earth am I supposed to know what generation of their wireless tech/groupset level I am getting. Its a mess and I wouldn't be buying brand new.

Where from? There are a lot of counterfeit chains about. Amazon is awful for them.

Thats the right tool but I have no idea what you were doing. The procedure to shorten a chain is:

1. Work out length of chain you want.
2. Use chain breaker tool to remove pin at that link. You can either undo it to the point where its just in the outer plate (usually if you want to re-join the chain without a quicklink) or you just completely push it through.

You then have 2 inner links that you join with a quick link.

Ordered it from eBay . Looks legit box wise and on the chain itself ?
