80 is definitely on the low side but keep in mind that the mean cadence figure can be slightly misleading if you're the sort of person that rather than freewheeling at times just pedals slowly (or indeed if you tend to slowly ramp up your cadence when starting off). I prefer looking at median cadence or looking at the analysis graph in Strava to get an idea of where my cadence hovers at a given power.

Also, you should get the StravistiX extension for Chrome and enjoy all the extra stats you get on the Strava website.

Depending on the grade of the climb it's to be expected that you would have lower cadence so I wouldn't beat yourself up about that *too* much. That said, I'd expect 60 only on a really steep section.

The ideal would be that you produce the same power at a higher cadence yeah. The point of that being that you're a little more efficient and will put less strain on your muscles.

When using a power metre for pacing, is it better to ride to %FTP, or power zones?

I'm using %FTP at the moment (bear in mind I've only ridden with one twice now!), but that jumps about quite a lot (and I dont know my FTP fully yet).

The zones seem a bit broader and seem like they would be more stable.

I wouldn't use it for pacing just yet. Ride with it some more and just look at the figures to get an idea of what certain power outputs "feel" like.

That explains it, you want to not ignore the 0s as these contribute and your ave power will be huge if you do a lumpy ride :D

Wouldn't ignoring the 0s mean his average power was higher rather than lower?

edit: Which I know you've stated in part of your post but I don't think that having ignore 0s on would explain the wattage figure on his ride.

I don't think you can really say that carbon is always better than alu. From all accounts decent quality alu frames compete with decent quality carbon frames (much like cack frames of either type aren't great - though imo cack carbon probably beats cack alu).

My attempts to do a load of local hills last year were less than 100ft/mile. Though really it was more like 0ft/mile for 30 miles and 140ft/mile for the rest.

Finally ordered all (hopefully) the kit I need to turn my turbo bike into a CXy off-road machine. Hopefully I can build that up over the course of next week and get out on some mud in Feb.

They're great tyres so if you like them stick with them. There are cheaper options that are good but I don't see the point in switching (despite me being a Pro4 fanboy) :)

Finally got all the bits and some time to convert my old Cotic to a CX bike. At the same time I moved it from 9 speed Sora and BB7s to Ultegra + hydraulics + 50mm carbon rims. Should be a substantial difference :) Need to bar tape it tomorrow and take it for a test spin.

I'll continue to use it for turboing too. Need to fit the 23mm turbo tyre on a spare 23mm rim wheel I have. Bit concerned that'll be a little sub-optimal but I suppose it doesn't matter much.

Old monstrosity set up for turboing only:

Ouch, sorry to hear that :/

Do you have witnesses and/or did the driver admit fault? Exchanged details? You definitely should report to the police as that's very important for everything going forward.

Do you have insurance and/or BC membership?

Make sure you note down all costs (and keep receipts). Keep a diary of how much you've been inconvenienced and/or have been unable to work.

Also, the NHS really are keen on not performing surgery which may (depending on the nature of your break) leave you with one shoulder sloped or shorter than the other. Keep a close eye on this during your recovery and push for surgery if there's any kind of shortening. I speak from recent experience with a broken collarbone. It can help if you make a big deal of your aspirations to complete triathlons or say you're a keen swimmer...
