Road Cycling

Took the CX bike out for the first time today. I definitely have a lot to learn about riding on mud/grass/etc but it was fun :) Brutal headwinds combined with low tyre pressure made riding home at the end 'interesting'

Agreed. When I coded something similar for BuddyPress I just went with generic wording as the advantages of users knowing exactly how many alerts (vs the fact that there are any alerts) were far outweighed by the increase in code complexity.

Anyhow, let's get back to talking about cycling :)

You could apply that to anything though.
Why have a garmin? If you're only riding for enjoyment speed/distance numbers make no difference either.
Why even bother with a carbon bike, nice wheels, modern groupset, etc?

Agreed.

I love having power to look at the figures. It's a luxury item but then again 90% of our choices when buying bike parts are.

Not sure I get the issue with turbo miles when people are training to power - often a harder workout than on the road. People like to be elitist though I guess.

That said, I don't really like Zwift counting climbing for indoor riding.

My point is this : 300w indoors is completely different to 300w outdoors, in terms of speed and therefore distance covered.
It's perfect to ride to intensity indoors but speed, distance and climbing will be significantly higher due to the fact there is no air resistance, wind and real rolling resistance. These metrics shouldn't be included in a riders overall stats.

My other observation is that some riders in the Zwift community appear to have power to weight stats which are significantly higher than the top Pro's.

Wrong data should be kept private to the individual.

True /re some of the data on some riders being dodgy as hell but that's not something that is only seen with turbo/Zwift stuff (though admittedly you do see it far more frequently on there).

Speed and distance aren't always higher. It massively depends on the setup you have - much like wind, climbing, traffic, etc affects speed outside. Essentially both riding outside and riding on the turbo is subject to a lot of factors that mean it's virtually impossible to directly compare one ride's miles and speeds to another. Hence why I personally don't have an issue with turbo miles being recorded in principle.

Any suggestions for reasonable waterproofs for my legs? On my long ride in May I'll be wearing bib shorts all the way, but given British weather wouldn't mind something breathable, light, thin, waterproof, and of course cheap, to go over the top just in case. Given the long distances involved I really don't want boil in the bag, and I guess I might just have to contend with getting wet. Really keen to avoid kit being wet when getting back into it though.

Naturally such a product doesn't exist, but within reason cost doesn't really matter.

It'll be warm enough in May that you won't want to be wearing any kind of stuff like that on your legs. I'd suggest just carrying an extra set of bib shorts so you can change into the drier ones as required.

I'm on Michelin Pro Endurance v2's - they've done around 1200 miles and they look really smoothed off now - you run the same don't you - how many miles would you say they usually do before they're toast?

/oops - quoted FT instead of BennyC.

I normally get around 1500 from mine (though I've mostly ridden on the v1s and only more recently on the v2s). Obviously depends on the terrain you ride on too. I put mine through a fair bit of punishment but it's still all roads.

edit:

As others have said, make sure you're eating food that you know agrees with you. Don't try new stuff on the day.

Take two spare tubes, not one. And a puncture repair kit. Worst case one of your tubes is knackered and you miss a bit of glass in your tyre...you don't want to be completely stuck.

If it's a long ride and your tyres are getting near to end of life I'd probably be a bit proactive and over the op...and replace them a couple of days before the ride (making sure you've been out once on them before the big ride to ensure there's nothing wrong with them).
