Road Cycling

Power meters are awesome :)

The thing I like the most is when cycling into a headwind and feeling like I'm putting out crazy power to go at 15mph...then looking down and realising that I am. Let's not talk about slight declines are tailwinds though. They don't exist.

Indian Pacific Wheel Race.

Crazy.

Basically you start on the west side of Australia in Freemantle then race/ride across the country unsupported finishing in Sydney.

I cannot imagine how difficult something like this would be.

On a bad day this really would destroy you physically and emotionally.

Not to mention all the fines you'd receive from the Australian police for not having a license plate.

I dont agree with that at all. He made a suggestion, it was then pointed out that it wasnt a great idea, he accepted that it wasnt a good idea and moved on.

I can quite easily image some politicians in this country having a similarly bad idea, then pushing that idea through just to avoid admitting they had a bad idea.

To be honest I only read the start of the article. Having read the rest I agree with your point. Mea culpa :o

What's the life expectancy of a Bottom Bracket out of interest? Assuming this (above) is it on it's last legs it's done around 4,000 (mostly dry) miles which seems a bit on the low side. (BB86 PressFit).

Any excuse to buy new tooling :o :D

Varies massively - I've had as low as 1k (was a very cheap Sora or lower end one ridden in rain, bike left out in rain, etc) but more normally I'd expect 5-6k, sometimes more.

What is the deal with disc brake mounting standards? Is it just a huge mess? I'm going to be installing trp spyres on my new bike, which are post mount unless you spend more for flat mount, but even the flat mount ones need adapters to fit them to a flat mount frame. Obviously if I get a post mount frame the post mount brakes are fine, but then if I instead get a flat mount frame I need adapters to get post mount brakes on there.

The frame I want - mango point ar - has post mounts, but it's not in stock. The Dolan rdx is more expensive and has flat mounts so then it's adapter hell or spendy flat mount brakes. The ribble cgr is in stock and post mount but it's more expensive than either of the other two and it's ridiculous bright flourescent yellow.

This is a pain in the arse.

Jonny ///M's advice is good.

The requirement for adaptors isn't that unusual even when you go for post mount. There are lots of standards for the frame and slightly less for modern road disk brakes. Steel frames often tend to be the most annoying when building up road disc brakes.

If buying new I'd personally just buy flat mount. I was very close to doing this for my post-crash build but for various reasons didn't - and I slightly regret that decision. I'd also not bother with TRP Spyres either. They're good for mech disc brakes but theyr'e substantially worse than hydraulics. Could you not get some setup with 105 hydraulics? The hood shape is kind of annoying but it's not awful and the brakes are substantially better than Spyres.

Spent most of my weekend building a 6'4' glasshouse so missed any of the group rides, hard work with the number of parts and ***** instructions! Managed a good Zwift base session on Sunday catching up on some of the Rugby 6N. Just as I was finishing up I recalled seeing a 'WBR Fast Lap' listed so I jumped on it for an easy ZP result.

As I was well warmed up I smashed it early, a group of 5-6 of us working well, 4 of us held on but I'd done too much previously to finish any better than 4th. Two guys getting up the road around 2 miles before the end and the 3rd place guy putting a couple of seconds into me before I opened my finish, had to go for a long sprint but couldn't close him down. Looking at the results the power averages put me into CAT A so was racing CAT A guys! Not many in the race but I was well in front of the CAT B's I'd normally be racing!

300W avg for 19mins, might mean I need to do another FTP test... (FTP currently set as 271W!) ;)

Sounds like all the group rides got soaked saturday and then the headwinds on sunday made things pretty miserable too! Most of them rode out to Abergavenny to support some of the locals riding in the 2017 #1 Abergavenny Handicap Road Race, best placed was Will coming in 6th. Sounds like a brutal race with only 65 finishers of the 100 starters! :o

Winds must have been coming from the south as of the 10-15 riders on my Strava (who rode down together in the morning), they had splintered into several groups for the ride back. A fast group of 4-5 smashing a load of KOM's on the way back!

While we're talking discs...

What are peoples experiences on pads & types? My 785 on the Diverge are 'Ice-Tech resin pads w/fins', I've had some wet weather noises again from them (still loads better after topping up my fluid levels!) and although I'm not changing them anytime soon, I think I need to start to build my understanding of pad compounds & types.

Most of this stuff should really be posted in one of the other threads :) Zwift/turbo thread for instance.

Popped out for a flat metric earlier. Weather was pretty grim right up until 10 minutes before I got home... which I guess I shouldn't be surprised by

Feeling the effects of the stag weekend I think (and to be fair, my lack of activity lately). HR was a bit high for the power output and it felt like harder work than it should do. First metric of the year though so I'm happy on that front :)

Gabba short or long sleeve?

Need something for English showery weather!

This time of year - short sleeve. I rode with a long sleeve today and even when taking it steady I was edging towards overheating.

If you're the type to get cold easily though perhaps take this with a pinch of salt. I'm more the overheating type.

Got back from Milan last night and have to get out to a wedding prep (not mine :p) thing in a bit but this weather was too good to pass up. Headed out for a quick 35 miles and put my foot down a bit. Definitely felt the effort but hopefully it's helped clear out some of the 4kg of prosciutto and cheese I ate over the last few days...

Pretty happy with the speed and average power :)

First Crit in 2 hours. Race legs? Maybe...

Didn't realise that is today  Guess you're done now but... er... belated good luck!
