Road Cycling

Interesting one.

Looking at some Fizik R5B Mens Road Cycling Shoes.

Found them on Sigmasports @ £123.89

However on ebay, Sigmasports are selling the same shoes, same size, Brand new - £98.99 and collection from Argos in 2 days time.

Not a great way to do business surely......

"I'm paid to ride Continental tyres but I got given some Maxxis so they must be better." - said no Pro rider ever. ;)

Other unrelated news, few guys from the local club had a bit of a domino wipe out on some ice earlier. Now my ex-neighbour is in hospital with two broken collarbone's and a broken thumb... Rubbish start to his year!

Take care out there everyone, no matter your abilities.

Welcome to the party AbbZ! If you're just starting out take it steady, it takes a long time of steady progress to do regular big rides like some you'll see here. Recovery is almost as important as riding, as is keeping motivation when you're increasing training load/miles/hours!

The vast majority of 'portable' hand style pumps won't have a pressure gauge as they're generally used for 'get enough air in to get home' purposes. The larger 'track pump' is what most will use when at home changing tyres/wheels and most will have and pressure gauge. I went through a cheap £12 and then a 'premium' £25 pumps before I settled on the Joe blow that someone linked. Incredible pump for the money and one of the best i've ever used!?

I shouldn't be too bad starting out, (or at least I hope) :p I'm relatively fit at the moment and apparently have a good build for cycling. 64kg, 5'7, but huge(and strong)thighs ;)

I popped in to decathlon this morning just for a water bottle, came out with a pump (with an integrated gauge) tyre levers, multitool, saddle bag, puncture repair kit, tyre levers and 2 water bottles :) Hoping to get out this weekend for the bikes maiden ride (with me)

I feel like i've already been bitten by the bug  I can't wait to get out :p

chilly commute.. and rear gear cable snapped again! :| twice at the same point inside the shifter on 105 5800 groupset.

Happened to my 6800 twice now too. 50-11 for 10 miles back last time... :/

Going to try remember to check for fraying in the shifter and generally replace cables even more often now.

Having used hydro discs on my recent cycle holiday, I have to say going back to long-drop calipers on my commuter is pretty sucky!

Does anyone make a small-framed, single-speed with at least a front hydro disc? I'd pay good money for such a beast! From what I can tell, it'd probably have to be a self-build.:(

It seems to last around 1.4k miles for me going by strava! :o

first to snap was the original, then the cheapo ebay cable I found in the box(1400miles) and now a quality jagwire cable(1370ish miles) :|

there must be some design flaw there then, my sram bike is on over 6k miles of same use and has original cables.

I looked around for a SS with hydros a while ago and couldn't find anything really.. custom seems to be the way .

maxxis detonator road tyres
http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/categ...t/review-maxxis-detonator-road-tyre-12-45550/ - general review. Quite a fast tyre by all accounts but not that great protection.

Sounds like they're quite puncture prone, so make sure you've got all the required tools and a tube or two with you any long rides!

I've got big thighs too (always have had them, should've been a sprinter!), similar height, but I started at around 100kg. I'm hovering around 75kg now after a couple of years riding. Don't be surprised if you gain weight (muscle)!
Ouch. That really sucks for them :/
Sounds like 4 of them went down, 3 missing some skin and Ben with his collarbones & thumb broken, at least he's still smiling (pics on Strava)! Nobody has said anything much about bikes but from the 8 riding only 3 rode back...! Hope Ben's Venge is ok! It's less than 6 months old... :o

Madness! Although make the most of it, I saw someone buy a returned/used Tacx Vortex Smart from Wiggle's Ebay page for £320 over the Christmas period (with £5 delivery) when they're on sale for ~£306 with free delivery new directly from Wiggle...

I myself have snagged a load of bargains from there the last month or so... Many of the items are returns, so some are damaged/missing parts, others are just missing packaging. My notable bargains: 5800 cassette for £18, 5800 chainset for £60 & Sportful Sotto gloves for £25.

Another sub zero commute this morning, drive by abusers out in force as we didn't use the ice rink like cycle path for all of 200m.

ELEMNT arrived today. Fingers crossed I'll get it working later for a couple of days usage.

Hopefully that's the last of the ice this week... I'm off to Jamaica in 6 days! :D

i was in one of those crashes a few years ago, 15+ riders on the deck, one hospitalisation. It's definitely a time for sticking to busier gritted roads.

Couldn't you just grab any small frame and chuck a disc fork on it then just buy single hydro brake lever/caliper?

Another Disc convert! ;)

Think custom/self build is the only way. Lots of frame options due to most CX guys preferring to build rather than buy off the shelf!

Yeah really puts things into perspective really. I'd say I know 25/30 local regular riders and now 3 of them have broken collarbones in the last 6-8 months. Admittedly only 1 of them due to ice/winter. Still a high percentage and really makes me think I need to utilise Zwift more for some of the solo riding I tend to do.

I'm happy to bin off any ride when it is icy as I'd much rather be 'that guy' who bails on a ride at the 11th hour than having a rider to tarmac interface!

Sticking to gritted roads is tricky because I can head in either direction and come straight back but can't really do a loop without getting into a country road or busy A road. Biggest problem though is the last half mile to my house which is like an ice rink at the slightest hint of a frost :(

I'm thinking of getting rid of my turbo  Second year with it and I've used it less than 10 times. I just hate the thing. I hate riding without going anywhere. I hate sitting steaming in my damp garage and I hate staring at my stupid little laptop screen :p Still, at least I used it more than it's first owner!

Yeah, I need to start being that guy but as much of mine is solo it just means I won't ride!

I had 3 proper offs in 2016, not including cleat falls. Two due to ice, thankfully both at <5mph so all they resulted in was scratched shifters/tape, bruises and holes in clothing.

Need a bigger TV than the crappy old 24" I've got at the moment for Zwift... Laptop is more than capable to drive 1080p but the TV doesn't support anywhere near it! Had hoped I could use our old 48" but after moving house we have 2 lounges and only bought 1 new TV!

Anyone noticed Dropbox changing, no longer will it have 'public' folders, which I generally use for image hosting on here, what's everyone else use that's a quick & easy/free/folder-sync?
I've got a pair of Gripgrab leg warmers, more of a 'slippy' lycra than some others and a shorter size than Castelli, Sportful & DHB. I'd probably try Large arm warmers than the Medium I'd normally wear when sizing them.
BUY A NEW TV THEN!!!! DO IT!!
Lol I know, but money spent on new TV is less saved for a PWM. Priorities! ;)

I can definitely see the benefit on a commuter but not in any rush to upgrade my road bikes.

Here is an example of a self-build although it's a cable-actuated, hydraulic disc.

Weather looks ok today, but no cycling for me. I took the girls swimming this morning instead. Managed 1km in 40 minutes, which is slower than Ryan Lochte, but faster than your mum, so I'll take it.

Genesis Day One gets you some of the way there, but you'd need to replace the front disc brake with a hydraulic one. I'm not sure how easy that is? I'm thinking of getting one myself but would probably live with the cable discs for now.
