Road Cycling

TrainerRoad from last year was saying 330w odd... but I think this is a little far fetched. The data was consistent last year so still beneficial, if inaccurate.

I felt fairly well warmed up by the 3rd sprint and that holding around the 300w mark is probably within reach. It's quite warm in there though & I'll have lifted albeit mindfully the day before & excuses & excuses :p

Will update the power thread once I have some new figures :)

I did think the 330W was probably a bit over the top but on the other hand, my 315W was also definitely over the top :p

I think 300W is quite doable for me too, based on a 270ish 20 min power when not trying to FTP test with my PM on a hill randomly. That said, I'm back up to 4kg heavier than you, with a higher BF% I imagine. Waa.

An aside...

Anyone that lives anywhere near Cheltenham/Oxford have any recommendations for routes between the two?

Alternatively, anyone between Oxford and London/Hoxton have any recommendations?

I am off work in a few weeks and maybe be cycling to Cheltenham to visit a friend before visiting another in Laaaandan. I'm feeling a bit too lazy to face two days in a row of 140+ miles.

Just call my Roady Jnr...

I was 'recovery' spinning/setting up/testing tonight ;)

I read recently ...'There is no good or bad FTP'...well :D

Makes me want to cry that Wiggins held 450w-ish for his hour record? 6.2w/kg or something disgusting like that :(

Edit: Oxford's not far, when are you off?

As others have posted, there's a bit of an obsession with FTP but it's not the whole picture. It's good for training purposes though.

Based on my training history I imagine my endurance over very long rides is probably substantially higher than my FTP might suggest. That said, I'm also very bad when it comes to pushing myself on shorter hills so that side of things is probably a lot less good than my FTP might suggest too. It's something I need to work on :)

I'm probably cycling on the week commencing 18/07, assuming I actually do it. There are potentially a few things that might mean I have to stay in Manc :/ If I do it I imagine the second day will be on the Tue or the Wed of that week. I'll be knackered from the previous day of 140 miles too so I won't be fast :)

I doubt I'll ever hit close to 300W. Too small for that!

Being a big ol' lump is handy for higher numbers...as long as nobody ever looks at my W/KG :p

Chuck in a bit of the Chilterns from Oxford. Then if you want to see where Londoners hang out add a lap of Richmond Park and then lap(s) of Regents Park (I hear this is where the North Londoners cycle) on your way to Hoxton.

Potentially something like the first 50 miles of my ride yesterday in reverse would be a good route into London. Watlington > Marlow > Cookham > Maidenhead > Windsor > Richmond Park
Not sure about the stretch from Oxford to Watlington as I've never been that far. Must be a few sportives that have started in Oxford and headed that direction though.

Good suggestions, thanks...I'll have a look at your ride :) As much as it'd be fun to cycle in Richmond park I think I'll be pretty knackered and be more interested in finding some place to go and eat all the food (and attempt to out-drink my friend before we head back to hers (er..not in *that* way)).

What the fudge... To go from Cheltenham to Oxford requires me to go back via Birmingham. That's not happening.

edit: Reading is less bad. Think I'll have to look at it properly whilst I'm being paid for it in work.

Jonny69...just rest properly. There's no point in re-injuring yourself or making recovery take longer.

I've been getting back into riding a bit more this week which has been nice. I can't believe how much happier I feel having done a bit more intense exercise. Makes such a huge difference.

My frame was from Flyxii. Dengfu are meant to be good too though.

For wheels you'll generally get them cheaper buying via Aliexpress or eBay.

I think I was quoted ~$470 including delivery for a 50mm 25mm wide wheelset which comes in at around £363 according to google.

With the pound to dollar rate at the moment you might be a bit fudged. An eBay seller would probably be a good bet as they may have already set the price in GBP and have not yet adjusted for the exchange rate difference.

Weather is quite frustrating at the mo...ended up cutting my morning ride short due to it turning to cack...and of course half way home it became lovely and sunny. Sigh.

Finally got a not utterly cack time on Blaze Hill, even though my attempts to get a decent PR were slightly scuppered by having to stop for some road works part way up.

edit: An entire minute behind OMS though, ouch. Hopefully by the end of summer I'll make up most of that time.

Ok, so one of my cycling objectives for the year is "Get a power meter and figure out what the hell to do with it." Well, I've managed to pick up a Garmin Vector S on eBay for £339 and I've successfully installed it, so hurrah there. It took a while to get it calibrated, but apparently that's a problem with the Garmin 500 I'm using, which doesn't like calibrating while its expecting any other ant+ devices. It seems to work, so that's part one of my goal done. Next job: figure out what the hell to do with it. I'll probably try to get out for a quick ride with it after work to get a rough idea of my abysmal numbers, and then I'll do a proper ftp test when I can bear to do it!

My advice is to simply ride normally for a bit with it. Don't concentrate on how high or low the overall numbers are to start with but get an idea for how much power you're naturally putting down when doing things like setting off from stationary, going up gentle inclines, descending, etc. You'll probably be surprised by your output (one way or the other) in all those cases.

Do you have https://chrome.google.com/webstore/...ggccakkgdfcadnklkbljcgicpckn?hl=en]StravistiX for Chrome? Absolutely awesome plugin and gives you way more interesting stats than you get from Strava premium.

The main disadvantages with the SJCAMs are that you'll need a waterproof case too and the shape of them kind of sucks (not so aero yo).

Once you factor in the case they're not drastically cheaper than the Virb.

Am I the only one thinking there isn't that much training benefit to be found in stupidly steep climbs? All you can do is clunk it into the bottom gear and pedal as fast as you can bear, which likely won't be very fast, and hope your knees don't fall off.

By all means ride them, but I wouldn't have thought it was the most useful training. Happy to be told in wrong, of course...

There's some benefit but it's a different one to the benefit of more steady climbs. Steady climbs over the 5-20 minute mark are a good opportunity to do threshold work. Super steep sections are going to be neuromuscular/anaerobic primarily.

In an ideal world you'd definitely get some of both in...but in terms of getting up *most* hills quicker you'll want to be doing more longer, steady climbs than short steep climbs.
