Road Cycling

Thank you :)

Will definitely pick up some cream. The shorts I have now were the budget B'Twin ones at Decathlon, that I bought when picking up the bike just so I could get out there, definitely going to look at getting some better ones now. Also need to get some proper shoes and pedals, currently using the stock pedals with my Converse (they're comfortable but far from practical) so I quite often find myself having to adjust my feet

Good work :)

Rather than cycling-specific stuff, get some sudocrem and use that. Cheaper and just as effective. Ask Benny so show you ho to apply it  ;)

Proper shoes, shorts and pedals will improve your comfort massively too so good choice on that front.

What do you guys eat when cycling in the early morning? I intermittent fast so I never eat in the mornings (because I'm not hungry and it works). I'm fine cycling up to 60km on an empty stomach but then I hit a massive wall and die. Best light thing to eat before hand? Don't like to eat while riding.

Cycling beyond 60 miles without any intake is quite hard work unless you're very careful to pace yourself.

If you don't want regular food you could just take a sugar/energy drink in your bidon or have a gel or two?

Alternatively, I often like to just have a large granola bar for breakfast when going on a cycle.

Would these be ok? The pad in their range of bib shorts seem to get a lot of good reviews, so I'm assuming it's good even for a few hours on the bike?

Or is it worth the extra £13 on these?

Most of the options above £50 are going to not suck so I'd just try some you like the look of. I personally ride the higher end DHB stuff and have been okay with the pads even on extremely long rides. The cheaper DHB stuff is useless for all but the shortest of commutes though. I'm also not a fan of Altura stuff as it seems to fall apart quickly and be designed for very large riders.

Woo, ordered the last bits for my new CX bike. Should be with me later this week, so all being well I can get building at the weekend.

Missed this. What's the CX build? :) Want to join us on some of our light off road rides sometime?

The tyres are Kenda's. Should I replace them?

Getting decent tyres is one of the cheapest upgrades you can do that makes a real difference to how nice the bike feels to ride (and how well it grips in the wet). I'd recommend changing them out yeah. Popular options are 4Seasons, GP4000SIIs and Pro4s. There's other good choices too of course.

You made the right choice reporting it to the police. I'd chase them to see if he's admitted fault - that's an important first step.

Get your bike checked by an LBS that you trust. If it's a carbon frame I'd personally write it off - or get the LBS to state in writing that it is safe. Make a note of everything that is knackered, including clothes and stuff that is just 'scuffed' - it could well be more damaged than you think.

Do you have your own insurance or are you a member of BC?

Speaking as someone just getting started with discs, what's wrong with sintered? Do they obliterate the discs?

The braking power is more reliable - reliably bad. They're also more prone to noise (and I'd say disc brakes don't need any help with that). They can cause rotors to wear quicker but that's not really a concern imo. Semi-metallics last for ages and have better bite. Race matrix in theory are even better than semi-metallics (at least UberBike branded ones) but I have never noticed a difference between the two.

Very important but it doesn't take long to bed them in. Just ride up and down the road and do a few intervals of accelerate, brake hard, repeat. You'll have them up to 90% power in about 5 hard brakes at most.

Haha just the thought of attempting that at my level now terrifies me. I struggled on my second climb yesterday, 2.6 miles and only an average grade of 3% going up to 10% in places which is laughable in comparison, so have massive amounts of respect for doing stuff like that!

Genuinely excited to get to a level where I can give have a solid attempt at a climb like that. Me and Ben are off to the Peaks in August for a bromantic weekend away, so setting up a structured plan now to be at a decent level for that. I'm also still at 95kg from my bodybuilding days, so looking to shave off 10kg by then

You're going to love Pyms Chair :p

Just had a look, that looks like a fairly respectable climb and what I should be aiming to do by August. Those little kickers look fun!

There's also Blaze Hill, Brickworks and other fun ones near where you're staying. Depending on how you feel about distance it's not incredibly far to go to Mow Cop too...

Fun fun :)

Only went and done Streatley hill tonight didn't I!? :D

Well chuffed with myself. A slow 11 minutes (although 3 minutes of that was taking photos and texting Ben and my boss as I didn't realise I'd stopped before the end of the segment, not making excuses as 8 minutes is still slow! :p). Was going so slow at one point my Bolt kept auto pausing haha

Then raced the sun set home as I had no lights, genuinely put a lot in to tonight's ride, kind of surprised it's only 16.9mph average, bolt said 17.1 :p

Yay!!

Classic Strava stealing mph tbh. Good work :)

Thanks for reminding me why Pro4s are awesome ;)
