Road Cycling

VeloToze looks so tight at the shin it might prevent water seeping into the shoe. They also look like a pain in the arse to get on.

Can confirm, PITA to take on & off but 100% waterproof providing you've no tears or holes in them. They're reasonably durable but depending on how careful you are putting them on & off and where you end up putting your feet down they won't last more than a few months.

They do seal perfectly around the shin/calf. In my experience spray accumulating and running down the legs and soaking in to your socks is the cause for the majority of the water getting in your shoes.

The problem is they grow so quickly you're having to take them up another notch to bigger bikes every 2 minutes. I bought my youngest a Wiggins for xmas and by the end of this year it'll be too small for her, other daughter is now on her first road bike (650b) and I have to wonder how long it'll be before she needs the full 700c.

I don't think RS would see that as a problem - just means he can buy a new Canyon bike every three months ;)

By the time it arrives, they will need at least one size higher.;)

Quads been feeling quite sore recently, I can only guess because I'm now riding at least six days a week and pushing my limits most rides, I need to come up with a better strategy... Either more rest days, or mix up intensive and pootle rides.

Felt very strange taking it easy on direct route from home on Tuesday to help my legs. When i finally pushed myself out of the door yesterday, I tried to pace myself better to do more consistent laps going on effort (couldn't see times, I keep my Strava recording gadgets in pocket), rather than blast one ~1.3 mile loop and then suffer. Seemed to work reasonably well, four laps of ~5mins-5mins 15secs, with best loop only ~10secs off my current PB.

Slight negative was my Polar H7 was not picked up by my smartwatch last night, but I think I got them seeing each other ok last night after the ride, so will try again later.

Or consider your pedalling mechanics/efficiency and positioning as increased volume will exacerbate any previously minor issues.

Hahahahaa they are all kinds of awesome!

I reckon I could persuade the wife on one for our 2yr old. We bought our then 11yr old a Grand Canyon and the idiot said he was going out on it to the park, really went to his mates and left it outside and it got robbed. Tool.

Haven't bought the 9yr old one as he's growing fast, but just built up a mountain bike for the eldest now. It's a chinese carbon frame, full XT set on 29s, but he'll be able to grow on it (XS frame) but can always upgrade the frame as he goes.

I'm not allowed more bikes... and we're supposed to be moving house, (the one we've seen has an even more cool basement for gym/ riding) so I reckon I'll get something to "build" and hide it in there :p

Dammit, now I'm looking on the canyon site.

Had my first real 'race' on Zwift tuesday night. KISS Night Road Race Series. As my previous 2 'races' have not been real races I entered myself as CAT 'C'. You can find my result on the second page under 'C->UPG' which means I exceeded C category limits and for this series there is no 'auto-promotion' up to CAT B as I'd entered as C... Doh! Oh well! :D
It was a tough loop of Wattopia with a climb of the Pretzel, myself and 10-15 others had broke away from the pack before starting the main climb with a good 15/20s gap. Once on the lower parts of the climb one guy tore away and I tried to hold his wheel, no chance! Myself and 4-5 others putting distance on the rest of the breakaway, midway it was myself and 1 other guy with 2 up the road chasing the leader down. At least 1 of them got disconnected before the top. Just before it the guy I was riding with dropped connection a couple of times so I held back a little to ride with him, the chasers behind us more than 30s down at this point. Once over the top it was some fast descending with us swapping wheels, I used the aero-tuck to carry lots of speed onto a kicker half way down, huge effort (saw 8.5w/kg & threw up in my mouth!) over it to put several seconds into him. At this point we were catching and passing guys dropping from some of the B groups ahead. Once on the flat we came back together so tried to save some energy for a sprint, around a mile before the finish he managed to jump on a couple of passing B riders wheels which I missed and had 4s to make up! Sprint finish was a complete hash as the finish line wasn't very distinct exactly where it was... Without a results table afterwards I had no idea if I'd beaten him into 2nd or 3rd place (so finishing 3rd or 4th). Zwift didn't auto-upload my ride to Strava either. The next morning Strava was broken/down (due to AWS East1 dropping) so I wasn't able to upload my ride until almost 24h later (work training course). My ZP ride data hasn't linked to my Strava ride and I can't figure out how to do it, or who to contact.
Looking at results, myself and the guy I rode most of the pretzel and finish with (Craig Barlow) have the exact same finish time (58:44) and both C->UPG. The first place finisher of CAT C was 1:01:07, with the only other faster CAT C->UPG I can see the 1 guy who sped away on the climb, so we finished 2nd and 3rd (but got unclassified). Our finish time would've placed us around 40th in CAT B (out of over 100 riders). So next race for me I'm certainly safe to enter in CAT B...!

I think they were on crc when I looked the other night.

Got some in the shop I'd take a better picture of the drop but I'm off :).
Thanks for the info bud, I've discovered the PLT which I think answers exactly what I'm after - a anatomic bar with a 'raised' middle part of the grip to spread pressure over my palms as well as the 'inside' edge of my grip (which is what's causing my numbness). At least for that price I'm happy to try it out without being significantly out of pocket if things don't work out as I'm expecting!

But at that speed if you came off the rotor would slice you clean in half, true story, rim brakes 4 lyfe, #propelotoncru
Remember it well, wasn't that the same time Sagan last had a haircut? :p
Talk to me about overshoes people....<snip>So think I need to get some overshoes. Anyone able to recommend a pair? Don't want to spend anymore than £20-30 ideally.
I've used/own/owned the following:
  • PlanetX Neoprene - Cheap but poor fit & didn't like velcro closure.
  • DHB neoprene - Cheap, thick neoprene & some of the tougher toes/heels. Heel slightly large/short so occasionally slip up, zips questionable but have been careful with mine (at least they're metal). Would happily buy the 'Extreme' ones.
  • Gripgrab Orca - Ok fit, but kept slipping up on my heel so returned them, didn't ride in the rain.
  • BBB HeavyDuty Hiviz - Loved the colour of these and good for road spray, not that waterproof as quite thin neoprene. Great fit but not as good in the rain as the cheaper basic DHB Neoprene. Wrecked them in a crash.
  • Gore Softshell - Comfortable and felt like they were good for warmth even though very thin and light. Wasn't convinced on waterproofness (top not very snug) so sold them on after only riding in light rain once.
  • Velotoze Tall - PITA to fit and not very long living, didn't get wet feet in drizzle wearing them but no insulation and not breathable in the slightest so very 'boil in the bag'.
  • Castelli Nano / Sportful Speedskin - Very thin & keep drizzle spray off, never ridden in real rain but imagine they'll cope fine. Can be fiddly to fit and won't last long as so thin & tight. Longer 'living' than Velotoze but would only use in spring/summer as no insulation.
  • Sealskinz Neoprene - My go-to at the moment, the open-sole highviz ones. Fantastic fit, top collar fitting to leg is excellent and the best I've tried. Fabric outers tend to soak up rain a little faster/sooner than the more pure neoprenes but this is offset by the better leg fitting. Zips have been fine and I've worn them 200+ times. Would certainly buy again at the ~£25 prices listed now, even after getting mine cheaper.
These are pretty good for winter, but they're not overly good for rain/spray. They're more of a softshell, than the typical neoprene, they don't stretch like neoprene but provide a good light fleecey layer that stops wind, rather than the 'heavy' feel you can get from neoprene. I found the tops quite a poor fit and water would have no problem running/soaking in from the top. They don't feel like they'd soak up water (like neoprene does).
VeloToze looks so tight at the shin it might prevent water seeping into the shoe. They also look like a pain in the arse to get on.
Velotoze are great for stopping rain, but as mentioned I wouldn't recommend them for long rides, they're rubbish for warmth as they're just like wearing a rubber glove. I wouldn't imagine they wear very well either! I've only worn my set twice and they have a few snags and holes (so I'm half saving them for if I start any TT'ing).
Does have hydraulic brakes magically stop your tyres aquaplaning? And increase the grip between the tyre and road?
YES.

This.

Had one of those rides today where I thought I should probably sack off the day job and go pro such was my awesome pace... then I turned a corner and the headwind slowed me to a crawl :p

In other news THE WINTER BIKE IS (slightly) BROKEN! I'm sure someone on here can point me in the right direction though. Basically I started getting a knocking feeling through the bars when on the front brakes. When I got home I noticed that my neat stack of spacers was now looking like a half finished game of Jenga and holding the front brake and rocking the bike I can see the forks moving slightly in the frame. Is that headset cap off and tighten up or something else?

Came across this comment on the bottom of a road.cc article on Sky's TUE saga: "Froome will probably get jiffy backs thrown at him this year. He'll soon be wishing he had those lethal disc brakes to keep the crowd at bay. " lol :D

So...about to move offices in work which means I'm going to have to lock my bike outside like some kind of plebeian. Anyone know of the cheapest place to get hold of gold secure d locks? I'm not interested in getting the best/lightest in this case as it will be locked somewhere relatively secure and I may get two of them.

Have a google round for the cheapest price but the best locks on the market are the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit or Abus Granit X-Plus. Both need at least 60s and two cuts to remove with a handheld angle grinder. :D (That is actually a long time in bike stealing terms)
