Road Cycling

I was getting all excited for one of the 9am club rides on saturday morning with the weather forecasts. Appointment booked for British Gas to come at 1pm, awesome, plenty of time to ride & get back! Friday afternoon they text the other half to move the appointment and she agreed to 10.30am. FFS! I missed the good weather, best laid plans and all that...

Had some visitors over for lunch, which thankfully easily distracted the other half once the food side of things was done. By around 3pm I'd decided to jump on the turbo, the weather was still good but it was just the easier option (being able to easily stop if required for anything). #i'magoodboy

Jumped onto a WBR 'Buffalo Herd' ride/race. 2.5w/kg group ride around Watopia flat for 4 laps. The first 3 laps with Sprints and the end part of the final lap as a race. The w/kg was lower than I was looking for as it's mostly aimed at C riders (and I'm technically a B) so I helped out doing some 'keeping' (riding riders back on who'd dropped) and lots of turns on the front. I smashed (and 'won' the first 2) sprints, before trying to take it easy for the 3rd lap before the race lap. Finished 7th overall, although the results got screwed so I'm still looking for my first real ZP result. That's 4 organised group rides/races now and I'm still lacking 'results' in my ZP panel. Grr!

Sprint 1 (13s), Sprint 2 (13s), Sprint 3 (12s), Race (5 minutes at @330W+, 29mph & 500W sprint finish I'm pleased with!) :D

Going to jump on this EVR race later if I can.

Ah... Gotta love a bit of retailer / manufacturer to and fro. Cycle Republic said they can't do anything about Topeak mini pump failing as it's just over a year old. Topeak warranty is 2 years. Topeak said contact Cycle Republic!

New Wheels ordered for the Ridley. More Chinese specials incoming. Will be my 3rd set, hope they're as good as my previous 2 sets.
Which ones?

Ebay specials - 25mm width 50mm carbon clinchers with basalt surface. Powerway R13 hubs. 1660g total without skewers. Shall see how this compares when they turn up.

Have you had to do any bearing maintenance on your other wheels (assuming Powerway hubs too)? I went for Novatec due to being worried about Powerway parts sourcing/maint but if it's not that big an issue I might look into it for my next pair. I've had three so far without problems.

MMH timings:

654 riders started.
Over 100 bailed.
I came in 272nd.

I'm quite happy with that as I only started road cycling 6 months ago, plenty room for improvement in the summer.

Now for a reward - chinese carbon wheels you say? Why yes I do think a new set of wheels would be most agreeable - which Ebay shop is it? :p

It happened at the round-about before the feedstation. I was standing up pedalling and it snapped and got pulled into the wheel. The wheel is fine but the RD and hanger were detroyed so it was a phone home for collection :(

Collection? Pffft, a real man would have unbolted the mech, then shortened the chain and ran it single speed!

Or not.

The thought crossed my mind.
I've just fitted the replacement parts (good delivery Wiggle :) ) and there is a fairly large buckle in the rear wheel from where the RD got wedged into the spokes.

Slightly annoying as the wheel is only 1 week old. I will ride with a slightly less responsive rear brake this week :p

Fingers crossed Canyon might actually ship my Aeroad tomorrow.

I haven't done any maintenance on my other hubs, sold my first set of clinchers with my old TT bike, and the other set are on my CX bike, had to tighten the hub up but that was it. They were both Novatec hubs. Went Powerway this time around as same weight but £20 less. They'll only be summer wheels and couldn't find any evidence of any notable difference in capabilities between those on offer.

Since returning to cycling the toes in my left foot have started going numb after about an hour. Any ideas? Bear in mind I haven't changed setup from years of 10k+ miles. I can only really think perhaps I'm subconsciously shying away from using my right knee properly so its somehow screwing up my position/technique.

Trying to resist the urge to buy some new cycling shoes because I really don't need them.

Another beasting at the coaching session today.

It was repeating a session from 3 weeks ago.

Warm up, 30 seconds hard as you can, 3 minute rest - repeat 10 times.

Ideally looking for an increase on each 30 second effort from the first time round, thus an overall increase in the average of the 10 x 30 seconds efforts.

Very close to puking at the end, was dizzy, light headed and totally empty by the end of it. Pushed 603W average for the last 30 second interval!!

On initial calculations the average increase in the 30 second intervals was nearly 40W. Around 9/10% up from 3/4 weeks ago. Peak heart rate was up a bit as well which is good. Pretty happy with that and hopefully not have to repeat that session any time soon!!! Was horrible.

Genuinely I think I've learned so much not just on the bike but much more about heart rate/zones/training/power output etc - been a superb learning experience and still a couple of sessions to go. Highly recommend spending some time/money visiting a local coach if you have one near you that's recommended.

I need some new road shoes (as opposed to spd winter/commuter shoes). I've got some northwave shoes but they're wearing out a bit. My shimano rt82s that I use for commuting are standing up to a lot of punishment so I'm very tempted to go shimano for my new road shoes. I like the look of the rp3 shoes, which are pretty cheap at just £63, though they are super bling bright wide, so definitely no good for wet days!

Just upgraded from Shimano R500 to Fulcum Racing 5s. To be fair the Shimano's lasted for 2 years but the hub has now died. I was tempted to go for the Racing 3s but as I'm 86kg and my bike is only an aluminum Merida I thought it best to save the money for other upgrades down the line (maybe a better bike!)

Fingers crossed Canyon might actually ship my Aeroad tomorrow.

My Speedmax is due for shipping around next week not expecting it any time soon though! Website still shows May but order confirmation suggested this week and online chat advisor advised as above.

How long have you been off or away from the bike? Are these miles in doors or outside? Obvious things to check are you're not over tightening your shoes, move about regularly on the saddle as well as coming up off it for standing drills. And if you can too, intermittently remove pressure from the sole of the foot by using the upstrokes to lift the foot within the shoe and help restore blood flow to the sole of the foot.

Might find your position just needs tweaking as riding styles, mobility & flexibility aren't fixed

Its been September since I've ridden "properly", and gave up entirely end of November. Been back since early February and only done turbo miles so far, so I definitely spend less time out of the saddle.

Move around more then if you're not uncomfortable :) Even on to the drops can be sufficient if you don't want to stand as can sitting fully up for 20-30 seconds during recovery intervals to drink/vomit.
