Road Cycling

The thought crossed my mind.
I've just fitted the replacement parts (good delivery Wiggle :) ) and there is a fairly large buckle in the rear wheel from where the RD got wedged into the spokes.
It's probably just 1 or two spokes needing some tension after being jammed, at the very worst needing replacing!
so about 350 riders who paid didn't even make the start.
Don't tell me that! I was frustrated that it'd sold out so fast last year, I neglected to check again over Xmas time to see if they had more spots open up. Next year? ;)
Since returning to cycling the toes in my left foot have started going numb after about an hour. Any ideas? Bear in mind I haven't changed setup from years of 10k+ miles. I can only really think perhaps I'm subconsciously shying away from using my right knee properly so its somehow screwing up my position/technique.
I used to get pains in the outside of my feet from rocking in the saddle, I was pushing my feet hard into the outside of my shoes doing it. All diagnosed with a bike fit. I was also running my saddle too high. Had the saddle a little low on my turbo and got sore/strained knees instead, so those are my two quite easy self-diagnosis symptoms when tweaking position! ;)
On initial calculations the average increase in the 30 second intervals was nearly 40W. Around 9/10% up from 3/4 weeks ago. Peak heart rate was up a bit as well which is good. Pretty happy with that and hopefully not have to repeat that session any time soon!!! Was horrible.

Genuinely I think I've learned so much not just on the bike but much more about heart rate/zones/training/power output etc - been a superb learning experience and still a couple of sessions to go. Highly recommend spending some time/money visiting a local coach if you have one near you that's recommended.
Good work and nice to see an improvement like that already! I looked around coaches here, there's several but the only one I'd choose is quite expensive. His 'basic' package was £35pm which involved 2 group coached sessions, with additional specific rides/coaching at £5 an hour/ride. For that £35pm (supposedly a 'deal' for me) it was online training plans and logging. He's a very 'active' coach with a proven track record but I couldn't justify the cost. He was suggesting a starting level of 6+ hours of training specific riding per week. I'd love to get enough time to ride for 6+ hours per week outside of commuting lol! :o ;)
I need some new road shoes (as opposed to spd winter/commuter shoes). I've got some northwave shoes but they're wearing out a bit. My shimano rt82s that I use for commuting are standing up to a lot of punishment so I'm very tempted to go shimano for my new road shoes. I like the look of the rp3 shoes, which are pretty cheap at just £63, though they are super bling bright wide, so definitely no good for wet days!
Was more than happy with the couple of Shimano shoes I had, but I bought some 'cheap' Giro's (Treble II's) after changing from 2 bolt to 3 (my Sidi's were starting to get beaten up by the commuting). £50 in a deal for them and now I've ridden with them I'll never wear a Shimano shoe again. They're amazingly comfortable, with far less flex than the £85 Shimano's they replaced! :o

I did 2 x 1 hour testing sessions to see where I was at/introduction - that was £20 for the 2 sessions, Then I was offered 6 more sessions at £100 for them. This is at his home/training studio. Around 75 minute to 90 minutes each.

Just about to put in another order at Sigma. Bonus next month so treating myself to the Specialized Evade helmet. Would it be a bit OTT to get the orange colour changing one? (bearing in mind I do have the orange colour changing bike, and the shoes to match too!)

Not sure if a bright coloured bike, shoes and helmet is a bit much......

I wouldn't worry, you'll still be invisible to car drivers!

Oh course! I'm on that bike with my bright fluorescent gabba top and people still fail to see me. I even had some dopey woman walk out in front of me the other day whilst going down the high street. She did apologise which surprised me, but I still can't fathom how she didnt see me.

Actual numbers from today for anyone interested. Purely to show the benefit I've got out of the coaching - numbers are probably nothing special to some people on here but I'm pleased with the results so far.

Pre (W) - three weeks ago - 30 second interval average power.
Today - Today's 30 second interval average power
Pre PHR - 3 weeks ago peak heart rate
Today PHR - today peak heart rate
RPM - cadence
%MMP - % of maximum minute power
w> - increase in watts on from last time

Big thing coach pointed out was the increased power output today for less peak heart rate. I.e I'm working less hard but getting more power output, which is a great thing to see in terms of progress.

Some nice gains there.

Out of curiosity and to provide some perspective what level of conditioning did you already have prior to your coaching? has your volume change at all during this period? and was your training structured before?

Not to discredit your progress at all :) but I'm keen to see where more precisely the gains made can be attributed to. As I'm sure with some simple structure and the will to progress many here could derive some good increases in power too.

Sure - I guess before this I was spinning the turbo over the winter but no particular thought to what training etc/structure. I was a weekend warrior mainly and never really thought about much other than getting the miles in - I.e one night I'd maybe do some zwifting, another night one of the sufferfest videos. Also I never really knew my "baseline" etc - where was I at?, was my pedaling efficiency 50/50?, pedal stroke? heart rate zones? etc - all this has been very useful information during the coaching process (amazingly I have pretty much perfect 50/50 split in my pedal stroke, even that last 607W effort was bang on 50/50!!!)

What's mainly changed for me is with the coaching/training session once a week, I started using trainingpeaks as well which gives a much better idea of what your effort/fitness/tiredness etc is. Along with that some simple, easy to replicate sessions from my coach to work on the turbo and out on the road.

Will to improve myself has been one big thing, some really hard training sessions once a week really push me to my limits, which is hard to replicate in the house on the turbo. Yes - we've all felt tired and done in getting off the turbo, but has it been pushing you to your limits in the right way.

Heart rate zones are very important which is something I've never really put much thought into. Not just how much power you can put out etc.

Great reading here for those interested - Decoupling heart rate effect - https://www.trainingpeaks.com/blog/how-to-use-aerobic-decoupling/

Overall I would say the general education about the science of cycling has been the biggest eye opener for me over the last 6 weeks. Got another couple of sessions in this block and I'll give a proper FTP test at the end of the 8 weeks and see where it's at. But also I've learned that it's not all about FTP - fitness, fatigue, heart rate, power, efficiency are all things to consider, not just banging out 200 miles a week without any actual thought of what your working on/training for/striving for.

A good quote from today when I was utterly done in from my coach was the famous Greg Lemond quote - “It never gets easier, you just go faster." - That's how I now think about it.

We can all spend money on wheels/frames/shoes/rapha gear etc - but honestly £120 over the last 8 weeks has been way way better money spent to get a proper idea of how to train and what to train for the future.

Long winded answer but hope that makes sense!!

https://www.strava.com/activities/890239130 - Zwift CAT C ride/race last night.
Finally got a Zwiftpower result last night! Woohoo! :D

I'd wanted to jump in a CAT B race but laptop was being an arse (25 minutes to boot & start Zwift WTF!) so I missed the start. I jumped in a base CAT C/D race and just spent the whole time trying to keep around 3.2w/kg (the cutoff to get disqualified). Classified as 11th with an overall average of 3w/kg I'm happy with as so many of the riders around me got disqualified. ;)

Did another few efforts afterwards to stretch my legs and do a longer cooldown.

I did 2 x 1 hour testing sessions to see where I was at/introduction - that was £20 for the 2 sessions, Then I was offered 6 more sessions at £100 for them. This is at his home/training studio. Around 75 minute to 90 minutes each.
Sounds well priced (compared to the prices I'd been given). Reading through your other info it really sounds like you got lots of info from your sessions too!

Awesome results, kudos on the improvement! I bet it's great to see fairly consistent progress across all of those power bands! :D

You've pretty much determined where I'm at, at the moment and where I've probably been the last 6 months. I've tended to go through phases of form, losing it and rediscovering it. Then again I've pretty much been the 'same' the last couple of winters, trying to increase training volume too late after reducing outside/leisure volume. Although certainly this year my power levels are much better, as is my stamina.

This winter I've tended to work on intensity, rather than hitting intervals and I've felt much stronger from it. Much of that I'm putting down to the lumps of 'base' miles I've also done (rather than the every other week like previously).

I know I could progress more with a coach (or even just sticking to a training plan) but I'm now at the level where I'm not sure I 'want' to. I struggle to get enough time riding as it is, so I'd have to sacrifice other hobbies/time to increase any volume for plans and specific training. I'm happy with the balance I currently have, providing I can continue as I am (which I'm still seeing improvements with) then I think that's the best for me (currently!).

It might be a bit much, but equally if your other kit is quite plain it would work? Helmet & bike matching I think works better than shoes, but equally shoes tend to 'do their own thing'! I tend to match helmet to kit (with my shoes being totally independent) but that's mostly from me having darker kit (& helmets) with a bright bike (& shoes/overshoes). I tend to go for contrasting colours - my black/red/white club kit (black/red helmet) with my highviz bike & shoes/overshoes.

got this wee beauty as part of our club run on Saturday, I really don't have the miles in for it yet but..........

https://www.strava.com/segments/666720

Have fun! It's an awesome climb.
Very easy to go too hard on the bottom. It's about 3 miles into the climb before you first see the top and you're only halfway at that point.
If you're riding in from strathcarron, there's a really sharp steep climb out of the village which you need to hold back on as well, it's only a few miles from the big climb so you dont want to be killing yourself there.

After some advice or pointers. A frond was showing me the functionality of his Garmin 1000 which seems to connect very well with strava (and provide maps, upcoming elevation, heart rate info, cadence etc) . I have a basic free strava account. I'd like to use my (android) phone as a satnav, and was wondering if anyone does the same and what apps people would recommend and how close I could get to the functionality of the Garmin without spending a fortune.

I decided not to continue with Sufferfest after the trial - the app is great but it needs to mature quite a lot in my opinion, so next winter I'll probably use that instead of TrainerRoad.
Same, I did the free 7 day trial and used it 3-4 times. It works well but for me it's not worth the money. Zwift gives me so much more! I'd used some of the standalone SF videos before (own 3 I think and 'aquired' a couple of others), the 'interactive' part of the new app works but you're right about it needing to mature. A couple of the videos I did the onscreen info contrasted with the 'built in' advice on the original videos, making things feel very disjointed and out of sync. Realise it'll never be exact, but when the onscreen & video is in recovery but the app HUD is telling you to continue sprinting it immediately makes you think 'Wut?' (the last thing you want on an interval...).
SDK - MMH photos are up. Also - are you doing the Mad Summer Hare event - early Sept? I'll probably do the 73 miles again.

Anyone else fancy it?
I might, remind me closer to the time lol ;)

Awesome, enjoy! One of the few Top100's that none of my Strava 'friends' have ridden! :o

I used to use ipbike on android to talk to ANT+ sensors before Strava worked with them. It's 'free' for the first 1 million wheel revolutions (or at least it was). Very good app and has much of the functionality lacking from the Strava app. Pretty sure it can do everything you listed.

Just bear in mind that a £40/60 garmin basic head unit will do it better. You can also get a 810 second hand for around £50.

I think I probably need to give the Zwift trial a go. I've sort of been put off by some things I've read about it.

What are their training plans like/how do they compare to TR?

Awesome, enjoy! One of the few Top100's that none of my Strava 'friends' have ridden! :o

The segment linked finishes well past the summit about 1.5 miles into the descent so you'll miss everyone who just rode up and back again.
Try this segment, same climb but an extra 600 or so people done it.
