Road Cycling

I think its almost certain I'll end up doing plenty of gradients like that, they are everywhere I go round here :p

Managed this on the MTB, although if it had gone on any longer I may have died, think average heart rate was about 188 .

Is such a thing even possible? Walked it and even that was a struggle! The full thing was a bitch.

It's gonna be a painful summer :o
Haha, hunt them down & conquer them! That's what I do! :D

Mike Morris is somewhere around you, you'll probably find him on many of the leaderboards or come across him out riding. Tiny & funny guy, but a hill climbing machine! :D

Would these be ok? The pad in their range of bib shorts seem to get a lot of good reviews, so I'm assuming it's good even for a few hours on the bike?

Or is it worth the extra £13 on these?
They both have the same KISS pad, its ok but I was buying the previous year model Evoluzione for £40-45 which I feel is a fair price, not the full price. I don't find the pads comfortable for 'all day' but I do tend to suffer more than others. I've found them brilliant commuting shorts and ok for the occasional 2 hour+ detour on the commute home though! ;)

I own two Volo jerseys so I'd probably buy the shorts, but only to match, as they have the exact same pads you're better off saving money with the Evoluzione... But equally see if you can find last years range on sale for even more saving.

Also, well worth buying 1 pair and wearing them for multiple hours before buying more!

I really want to do the 312 but I dont think I have it in me.
...and if I did id prefer to go around the whole island.
Derp 312, not 321 lol ;)

Yeah, it looks very attritional. Although it doesn't have Soller, Lighthouse or Sa Calobra so unless you've done all the big names (and happy with your times) I'd say skip it in preference! Such a hard day, it'd scupper any other big rides so prob worth doing on a short weekend, rather than as part of a full week? I do quite like the idea of riding the 'bottom' half of it - Soller down and then cutting back up through Bunyola, still around 70/80 miles. Avoids much of the long flat drags around & Puke Major.

Deal on some 23mm tyres: 2 x Mitchelin Pro 3 Race & 2 tubes for £30.

May have found my future wheel 'plan'... Zipp 30 Course Disc. Buying the wheels separately can get the price down to ~£600... Going to hope in a decent enough sale/offer I can get them for around £500 or something :)

Tubeless compatible, wide 21mm internal width, although quite heavy (1700g with discs) much of that weight is hubs/discs and not on the rim. Still almost half a kg lighter than my current wheels... I really can't afford to stretch to the Firecrest 202's or 303's as they're triple the price...!

Mad one: http://www.cyclingweekly.com/videos...-then-sits-there-patiently-as-driver-parks-up - blink and you'll miss it (in the distance near the start of the video).

What do you guys eat when cycling in the early morning? I intermittent fast so I never eat in the mornings (because I'm not hungry and it works). I'm fine cycling up to 60km on an empty stomach but then I hit a massive wall and die. Best light thing to eat before hand? Don't like to eat while riding.

Cycling beyond 60 miles without any intake is quite hard work unless you're very careful to pace yourself.

If you don't want regular food you could just take a sugar/energy drink in your bidon or have a gel or two?

Alternatively, I often like to just have a large granola bar for breakfast when going on a cycle.

Most of the options above £50 are going to not suck so I'd just try some you like the look of. I personally ride the higher end DHB stuff and have been okay with the pads even on extremely long rides. The cheaper DHB stuff is useless for all but the shortest of commutes though. I'm also not a fan of Altura stuff as it seems to fall apart quickly and be designed for very large riders.

Woo, ordered the last bits for my new CX bike. Should be with me later this week, so all being well I can get building at the weekend.

Missed this. What's the CX build? :) Want to join us on some of our light off road rides sometime?

Seconded. I can do about 35 miles on just breakfast and drink squash while riding. 50 can be done with just energy drinks, but I'll be tired after. Once I get up 60 miles I have to eat regularly or I'll be seriously struggling by the end of it - I'll eat something every hour or thereabouts on a 60 miler, and the same goes for anything longer.

Mango Point AR frameset with SRAM Apex and TRP Spyre disc brakes. I'll see how I get on and might head down your way sometime!

Might build myself a nice summer bike and make my current Giant my Autumn/Winter bike.

Siggestions best road frame and fork for around £300?

I don't think you'll get much for £300 that'll outperform a defy.

Planet x pro carbon framesets from £249 are good value though

probably better off with performance upgrades to what you have. Maybe a nicer summer wheelset?

Ingest something or accept unless you pace it as a Z1/Z2 ride you will be limiting your distance and intensity.

I intermittent fast (more religiously at times that others). If I'm riding more than 40-45m I'll start to eat on the ride (or if riding hard for a shorter duration in a fasted state) if not I won't.

Eat to perform.

You may be onto something there - essentially the only real complaint with the Defy is the wheels - they're out of true if you so much as look at them hard, they're also made from iron.

I regularly do 50 miles early morning and I'll usually just eat a banana towards the end of the ride - 35-50 miles in. I'll often have a nutri-grain bar or soreen lunchbox loaf (why do Asda keep on going OOS?) in case I feel more hungry. I usually have a small bowl of porridge and a coffee beforehand.

£300 gets you handbuilt archetypes on miche hubs from the cycle clinic. I've had a set for maybe three years now on my summer bike and they've been great.

I was going to suggest similar, but with the novatec hubs, a bit lighter, similar money and I had 7000 no maintenance miles in horrible weathers before I had to change the bearings

Nice quick commute in this morning as the wind was behind me, though that doesn't bode well for tonight.

Had a bit of an encounter with a dog. As I was heading along I could see cars bunching up ahead and then spotted a cycling taking evasive action to avoid a dog in the road - it was a reasonable size, maybe like a German shepherd? After he passed it, it went back to the pavement, no owner in sight or anything. I signalled to the guy in the car behind to slow down and rode on past and as I neared the dog it ran out into the road towards me growling so I put my foot down and got out of the way. I looked back to see that the driver behind me had stopped so presumably he was planning to sort things out.

I pressed on to catch the guy I'd seen ahead of me, and overtook him just as he caught another cyclist on a hybrid. I recognised his bike - a kona paddy wagon - as one I see locked up at work. He actually beat me there in spite of my overtaking as he took a slightly quicker route for the last mile or so, which I don't use as there's a junction that can take forever.

Same - early ride in a morning I usually have a coffee and a slice of toast with banana on. Can go around 35-40 miles on that. Anything over that and I usually try and get a bowl of porridge down me. I don't particularly like it but I tell my brain it's just fuel.

Big bowl of porridge (topped with a spoon of syrup and a handfull of dried fruit) for me before a long ride / run / race.

Not eating whilst riding is going to be an issue on longer rides though IMHO. You'll empty your glycogen stores and, bam, you hit that wall. I rode a 100km Sportfive on Sunday and whilst riding I had 2 or 3 gels, a couple of SIS energy bars, plus a few Jaffa Cakes & some flapjack at a feed station.

i keep filling up with snot at the mo and it makes eating on the roll really hard - feel like i can't breathe, so i have to stop, scoff and go
