There is a difference, especially when riding up 20%+ hills. Most non-pros don't need the extra gearing of a 52/36. Heck, some pro's even use compact crank sets.

How many times are you blasting along at 35mph and think I wish I had another gear, vs, slogging it up a hill wishing you had a lower gear.

I'd actually say it's more often that I'm blasting along the flat wishing I had another gear :D #flatlondon

First proper ride out today as my spd shoes came. Did about 10 miles. Still got a fair amount of energy left, will probably do 15 next time. A lot of fun, did a pretty mean climb as well had to pause for a minute at the top. Going back down on the way back was very satisfying

Back to the future - Feb 2016 :D

And today :D

You're welcome to apologise now :D
I'm glad you found those previous posts because I was looking for them earlier to reference them but my search skills were failing on my phone.

My assumption before I got the Aeroad was that the larger 52/36 crank would ruin my high cadence preference and I even bought a compact ultegra crank to go on the Aeroad. After my first ride though I found the 52/36 worked fine and there was no issue with slower cadence [I can go faster up steep hills than before so my cadence is probably about the same, dispite the larger cranks], So I returned the unused compact crank to Wiggle.

I'm actually wishing I had a bought a new bike earlier, going slower on the Allez for a year longer than needed.

2011 up Winnats : compact crank avg cadence : 53 https://www.strava.com/activities/205846671#4850653710
2017 up Winnats : semi-compact crank avg cadence : 62 https://www.strava.com/activities/974864073#23887023232

Well, i have a track session Thursday evening - quick taster session to see if I want to join the club and spend the spring and summer going round in circles*

*sorry, ovals. :p

So on the flat with a 50-11 you would be probably spin out above 45mph. Get this man a 58T!:D

Haha. Spinning 130rpm is not something I find easy at low power let alone the power required for that! :D

When I borrowed a Giant Propel with a 52T I felt much more comfortable spinning in the 32-35mph range. Didn't feel like I was spinning the legs like a mad man!

Sounds like fun, I would love to give it a go sometime. Just wished the proposed one at Aylesbury gets the go ahead as its just down the road from me

Without wanting to spoil the semi compact love in (I like mine too), the difference in old vs new Winnats is a) you're probably fitter and b) you went up Winnats with a rare tailwind on the weekend. :D

Are you really going to compare two efforts 6 years apart and attribute time savings purely to your chainset/gearing?

You didn't have a PM in 2011 (and if you trust Strava's power estimates) then you were working objectively 20% harder in 2017 than 2011. :o (278w vs 222w)

How much weight saved from you & bike and were you in lowest gear for each of them? With lower weight and higher power you'll have found the higher cadence easier - less grinding. As without knowing that your technique for climbing was exactly the same (doubtful!) it's very hard to draw any comparison. Apples and Oranges really, there's just too many variables.

Wow, that's some epic searching & memory! ;)

Good work & keep at it! Climbing up should always be followed by a fun descent, it'll help to keep you motivated when starting out! :D

This.

I'm not comparing time savings : cadence !!

Still, your power is not insignificantly higher on the most recent attempt so it's not an accurate comparison as to which chainset is easier or more difficult to turn.

I saw your name today whilst browsing the results. Reckon you could go quicker then?

Westferry or eglinton would be a better national course being dual carriageway or even the Stirling flats.

Didn't realise it was that bad!

Still John managed a 20:29...

Lawley doing a good time, expected better of the guy in 9th as he goes like **** out with the Bundy. Will get the story off kyle about the cars etc.

Yeah, going over data with my coach and I was off the power for 54 seconds crawling behind the queue at the roundabout and finished with 310w NP which is only a 1w increase on my best for a 10. That would have led to a substantially quicker time not getting stuck in the traffic.
The guy in front of me I caught at the line is usually a 21min guy and he was a 22:5something..... Only other bloke I have spoken to is a mate up here from another club who was off 12 mins before me, he only equalled his power from a 25 the week before due to getting caught up at the roundabout.

Westferry, Cambusbarron or the Kildary course up here on the A9 where Nationals was supposed to be this year! All flat, decent surface courses on big roads/roundabout turns. I have Kildary a week tomorrow, shifting focus to that for a fast time if the weather is kind. 315w long 20 is there I just need a break from all the course/lorry drama that's plagued my season so far.

Who are all the guys you know from down your way?

Chris Froome has a run in with an impatient driver. Just shows it can happen to the best of us.
