Road Cycling

~48 mile Charity Ride on saturday. Great turn out, around 220 riders and almost £1000 raised for a local school (ride is free for everyone, so just donations).

Rode it fairly reserved as a social ride with a few guys I ride with on the weekends (rather than with some of the faster groups) and a couple of extras, 6-8 of us for most of it. Brutal winds from the North-East made the end half of the ride very hard work and I spent most of the time on the front pulling & leading the climbs.
  • First climb was Orcop hill, which according to Strava I've not ridden from that side before. We reached it the same time as another faster group I knew several of, so I nailed it up there racing Dean (no chance!). Really happy with my effort & power, was good to wake the legs up! 12th fastest on the day (of 68 on Strava).
  • After the descent I stopped to lend Luke my multitool so we were both chasing back to our respective groups for Bannet Tree Lane, I couldn't stick with him (almost blowing) but happy with my time up this one too, (12th of 65).
  • The next climb into Gosmont I took easy but got carried away on the long drag afterwards really not expecting it to drag on so far. I hit the bottom far too hard chasing and passing a couple of guys in Wiggle jerseys!
  • I don't even remember the next climb into Broad Oak as this area of the ride was just a long slog/drag into headwinds, our group was breaking apart at this point.
As we turned north away from the winds I pulled everyone over to regroup and allow the slower guys to take a breather. The next couple of miles were easy spent enjoying the sunshine (as we had a break in the clouds & shelter from the winds), before turning east again into the headwinds. I took the front here to even the pace out through these heavy rolling roads but we still had to stop a couple of times for Steve who was running on empty. I gave him some of my food and a bag of haribo before Holme Lacy to help him back, we were then on very familiar roads so the run back from Mordiford the group split up again slightly. I really pulled back at this point riding with Adam and semi-waiting for Steve - I was really suffering with saddle/sit-bone pain and this section of road is very rough. Everyone got held up by traffic getting back into town so we just ticked over the 3 hour mark rolling back in within 10/15s of each other, otherwise we'd have been under 3 hours.

I probably had the worst sit bone pains I've had on the bike yet - the couple of 6/8 hour rides I've done hurt far less! It was the first time I'd ridden Castelli Endurance (Progetto X2 pad) shorts for more than a couple of hours so putting it down to them (I've done harder/longer rides with less pain in other shorts in the last few months). Strange as for the turbo work I did over winter they were by far the most comfortable of all of my shorts. My legs felt fine throughout, fuelled well and had energy left at the end (so wasn't even the usual 'just get me back home' drag back)! Great ride & really enjoyed it, my arse was so tender I ended up doing a short week of mileage as I had intended to go out on sunday... I'll try and make up for it this week! ;)

Nice ride. Would you recommend the route or are too many of the chosen roads in poor repair? I can vouch for Hampton Park Road as it's close to may parents' house and is in a desparate need of an urgent resurface!

Lol closed road on this Island you're having a laugh.

I just looked up the council site for this expecting it to be prohibitively expensive but it's not as bad as I thought. Seems to range from £600 to £1100 depending on council area. Still going to cost each rider ~£100 to enter though.

Out? But you LOVE TT'ing so much! :p
£100 per rider? Can we not get the tax payer to subsidise it for us and make it a little cheaper?.....

The Tour of the Peak ride today was excellent : 61 miles with 6,500 ft of climbing and I came out of it with 96 PR's :) Sadly no new max speed records as there were too many cars in the way :(

PR's much?! Wow, I'd be seriously chuffed with that - great before and after.

How many of those PR's came from extra fitness vs the new bike do you think?

should be repairable. :)

Sure it's not screwed? ;) :p

Whatever your views are about the cyclist riding primary before the incident, what that driver did is indefensible!
They're both being stupid if you ask me, the fact the rider has at least 1 other following him (recorder) who's in a more sensible part of the road makes his position and actions even more stupid and dangerous. I feel he opened himself up to far more risk taking primary there, than if he hadn't.

What the van driver did is totally 'assault with a deadly weapon' and dangerous driving and should be treated as such. Just in my opinion the road there is more than wide enough for a safe overtake (and proven by the recorder), regardless of road markings. Stupid, stupid, stupid!

There's a solid white line which the van isn't allowed to cross unless the cyclist is going under 10mph, so the position is totally legit.
Legit/legal yes, safe, no chance! We need to see more of the recording, at least a minute or two prior to see the lead up to the incident. I'd be very interested to see how much space/room the van driver gives to the guy with the camera who isn't in primary. I'm betting more than enough!

Awesome ride! How did it feel climbing on the Aeroad? Was that the first big ride with lots of climbing you've done on it?

Pics of my new bike... in spoilers because size yo.
That looks superb, LOVE THAT GREEN! :D

Will be quite interested on how you find the Schwalbe CX tyres :)

Thanks - all down to fitness :p [see proper response below]

Climbing on the Aeroad is easier & faster. I know this because the gearing on the Aeroad is a semi-compact (52/36) vs a compact on my previous bike (50/34) so when the gradient goes up it should be harder to keep the same cadence on the Aeroad. But the opposite is true - it's actually easier to turn the pedals at a slower speed, despite the bigger gearing. This has to be down to less bike weight to move.

Weirdly I experienced similar, compact on my Giant, semi on my Diverge. Total weight is very similar, yet I find the Diverge no harder when climbing, if anything it's more responsive when stood (stiffer? alu vs carbon?).

Both with 11-32 cassettes.

Short on time, and on my own, so decided to have a real go at my local coastal loop.

https://www.strava.com/activities/976650345

Considering I've ridden that loop loads over the last 3 years (probably 50 times or more) - pretty chuffed with the PR's/average weighted power for the distance and average speed (a number of stops at traffic lights on the way home)

Head win back was brutal mind you.

First time i've really ignored speed/distance etc - and used my garmin/ vectors and just focused on trying to keep my 3 second average power at around 250W. Seemed to work out ok.

Probably heading to the local training bunch tomorrow night - I suspect I'll get physically, mentally and verbally abused - but looking forward to it!!:p:p:p

So I got the 2nd fastest time on the Peaks ride (out of 950) missing 1st place by 5mins. I should spend less time munching chocolate brownies at the stop !!! :p

The abuse is all part of it! Helps to reduce the suffering (but don't tell them that!) ;)

On Strava or timing chips? Strava time is more accurate because of the junction/food pauses ;)

Really really tempted to go out later (drove in today)... But need to mow a lawn or two first lol :(

Does anyone know it it's possible to change the crankset on a new Canyon bike order?
I'm looking to buy an Aeroad CF SLX 8.0 with Ultegra Di2 but I would like it with a 50/34 Compact Crankset, not 52/36 which is the standard spec.

SDK^ said:
There is a difference, especially when riding up 20%+ hills. Most non-pros don't need the extra gearing of a 52/36. Heck, some pro's even use compact crank sets.

How many times are you blasting along at 35mph and think I wish I had another gear, vs, slogging it up a hill wishing you had a lower gear.

very Sportive I ride - Tour of the Peaks (Winnats Pass 20%), Cheshire Cat (Mow Cop 25%), Stratford Sportives (Cotswold Hills).

Anyway, I know it's possible to change the crank out myself and re-align the front derailleur, but it's just hassle.

And today :D

I'm a spinner and therefore go for a 34x28 normal riding and a 34x32 on hilly rides on my current bike.
I was around 3.7w/kg last Ocotber but I'm currently in recovery training after 3 months off the bike, around 2.5w/kg now :/

You're welcome to apologise now :D

Even better is competing in your national 10 mile TT and having to join a queue of traffic at a roundabout 4 miles in..... Utter shambles.
I saw your name today whilst browsing the results. Reckon you could go quicker then?

Westferry or eglinton would be a better national course being dual carriageway or even the Stirling flats.

Didn't realise it was that bad!

Still John managed a 20:29...

Lawley doing a good time, expected better of the guy in 9th as he goes like **** out with the Bundy. Will get the story off kyle about the cars etc.
