Road Cycling

Has anyone spotted any bargain deals on framesets anywhere? Looking for something to replace my written off Supersix Evo I got for £749 from Pauls Cycles. There's nothing really jumping out at me at the moment. I'm not really fussed on what frame, I liked the Supersix but never really loved it, it was just a good deal.

Must say, having ridden a "pro" level frameset now, there's no way I'd pay RRP for one. It was certainly good but not worth £2k+.

Diminishing returns kick in strongly above about £2k with bikes I reckon.

After something similar to a supersix (head down/racy) I guess?

I'm out for a 65 miler first thing tomorrow. Weather looks pretty promising. 4500 feet of climbing, 6 categorised climbs - 3, 4, 3, 4, 4, 4. It's gonna be a tough one.

Actually genuinely bricking it about Sunday :(

You'll be fine :D Just be fuelled on by how jealous I am that you have a place :P

I'll be a little bit annoyed if it turns out they did nothing to segregate 46 mile riders from 100 milers... I got a 46 mile place but was only tempted if I had a chance of tagging onto the 100/taking a diversion/getting lost and ending up on the 100 route 'accidentally'.

Tempted to head out Dorking way and watch some of the pro race as there's 5 laps there but not sure how easy it will be to get there with the road closures.

Haha thanks!

Given how particular they are about rider numbers/hitting places at times etc, I bet they would have spotted you a mile away doing the 100 on a 46 place :p

I know I've had a grumble about elevation in Strava in the past but this takes the biscuit. Route generated in Strava, note the elevation - https://www.strava.com/routes/4236913 and after actually riding that route - https://www.strava.com/activities/657411164

My Garmin doesn't have an altimeter so I use Strava's data for elevation. So as far as Strava is concerned that route has both 1300 ft and 2600 ft of elevation  I don't even really care if the data is inaccurate as long as it is consistently inaccurate. Unfortunately as it stands it renders the estimated power and therefore calorie burn aspects of the site useless.

I guess this should be all the excuse I need to upgrade my GPS... and get a power meter :p

So when your PM pedals aren't being retarded and crank length is behaving you can actually put out some less miserable numbers :p  Such intensity

Well, that was a very mixed bag. I ended up clocking in at 59.9 miles, 4265 feet, 14mph, average heart rate 145bpm, weighted average power just 154W. It was always going to be tricky. I was way tired for starters - it's my 9th consecutive day of cycling and I came into it with 215 miles in my legs since my last day off, and I've been ill and sleeping badly... On top of that it was stupidly windy, so very hard work. I also managed to get a couple of mechanicals. On the first cat 3 I dropped my chain, though fortunately managed to get a foot out and down before I dropped myself, so then just had to walk to the next flat bit to fix it and set off again. Worse was the rear gears, which were playing up and kept clonking and shifting of their own accord. I eventually stopped to look at what was going on and realised that while the shifter was all the way over to the big sprocket, the chain was sat in the middle of the block. I pulled the shifter again and saw the cable just slip through the mech. The bolt must have worked itself loose. I did some roadside repairs and got it working, just about, but by this point I was losing time and losing my nerve, so I cut my route a bit short and turned towards Bolton and relative civilisation just in case anything else went wrong, rather than taking in the remaining two cat 4 climbs which are a bit middle-of-nowhere-y and which would definitely necessitate use of the low gears that my mech seemed keen to avoid. Coming through Bolton is always a delight, no one can drive. I nearly got pulled out on by some woman not paying attention. Some old man took umbrage at my riding up his inside in the bloody cycle lane and bipped his horn at me and wagged his finger like a proper penis. At the next set of lights he sat way over left to block me. I passed him on the right and sat in front of him in the ASL... Then just about a mile from home I had a stupid encounter on a mini roundabout. I was going straight over and there was a van at 3 o clock indicating left, like to go down the road I was on. I figure it's all good so I start moving out, and he does the same, except he doesn't turn left, he starts going straight over to 9 o clock. As I pass the front of him I see he's not indicating left, he's got his hazard lights on, so he's indicating everywhere. Argh.

Anyway.

The good... I got in the big climbs I wanted to ride that I've not done this year. I wasn't very quick, but they're good climbs anyway and it's fun to beat them again. I got my clothes right, and I was right to put a base layer on. It was even worth taking my arm warmers and gilet with me, as the weather was just at the tipping point at which I might have put them on. I got my food right - bunch of weetabix before I set off, then two energy bars and a gel en route. If I was tired, it wasn't for lack of food.

Good effort, shame drivers and mechanicals exist, but at least you smashed some good hills!

- Does anyone know where I can get replacement cleat bolts (using Look Keo's), I've lost 2 now, don't think my puny cycling arms managed to tighten them enough. Or should I just buy new cleats in preperation as I'll need them eventally. Keo's being £9.99!

EDIT: Prime Now has cleats, so going to order them for my ride tomorrow. :D

Shamrock and I came across a white van driver earlier who seemed intent on killing us due to the fact we were using 'his' road. He was originally going in the opposite direction but turned around and chased after us, then went to turn back, then got annoyed again, chased us, then slammed on his brakes in the middle of the road, then chased us for a bit and eventually gave up. WTF is wrong with these people.

Witnessed a stupid Peugot driver try to over take/squeeze in to a small gap that had opened up in the group of 10 as we were descending (at good speed) this morning.

Blind bend and oncoming traffic causing both directions of vehicles to screetch to a stop. Never witnessed such sheer stupidity in all my life.

Nice ride.

I'm heading out to Frodsham tomorrow. Not been there much but gonna give it a go. Gotta trudge thru the centre of Warrington though :(

Frodsham, yeah, it's a bit of a pig getting there. You got a route planned when you get there? I did a ride on a Thursday afternoon at the back end of last month which went round there. There's a good cat 4 climb from Frodsham town centre. There's another cat 4 I did on that ride which is pretty steep, up Yeld Lane, though there's roadworks at the end of the road after you come down the other side so I had to ride through a pub car park to get past.. I took a section from the Liverpool Chester Liverpool sportive which I've ridden before and fancied redoing. It's not a barrel of laughs getting back through Delamere - some big main roads to cross.
