Road Cycling

I've often wondered why Box Hill always seems to fall under the media spotlight. Its like a little lump that isn't even very steep!

I read somewhere it is supposed to be the most ridden segment in the world, whether there is any truth in it who knows.

Edit: It was second after Sawyers Hill

It does sound quick, but no faster than your average Cat 2 road race really, just a bit longer. I knew a lot of the guys in the front group as they nearly all race locally.

Out of curiosity, if you rode it solo what do you reckon your average speed would be?

Also, anyone that is walking by that point should just be pulled out imo.

Doesn't sound like a bad idea even if they just divert them onto the 46 route but with hundreds of riders passing at once, it's got to be a hard task to manage. Not sure how you could easily pick out the riders and suggest they divert.

I'm in two minds about whether I should have taken my 46 place. On the one hand, it could have been quite fun and closed roads is always nice but it's still just flat central London roads and a good chance of being mixed in with the masses and not really enjoying it + the ride over to Stratford/back+waiting is hardly thrilling. I'll apply again for 100 next year and decide if I happen to get a place.

Same for the Velothon Wales next year. Riding it with workmates was all good to start but once I lost them and just tried to ride at my own pace I got a bit bored trying to maintain a rhythm on the climbs and descents.

Anyone have any recommendations for a single-speed wheelset for commuting? At the moment I can see a cheap option and a pricey option.

£134 for V-Sprint wheels built on Mach1 21mm rims and Miche Primato hubs. LFGSS seems to rate these pretty highly. They are hand built by Jess Varnish's dad.:D

£350 for H+ Son Archetypes built on Miche Primato. The rim should be better in theory but price seems a bit steep!
That's pretty much the track wheel market. You have a choice of very cheap or very expensive and nothing in between. That's why I ended up building mine myself. £135 for hand made seems pretty reasonable if they have the look you want - that's probably how much you want to be spending on your commuting wheels. Key thing is they've got sealed bearing hubs which in SS wheels will see you for 8-10k miles before you have to touch them.

I was pretty happy with my initial pace. The crash at Pyrford kinda messed me up, and my eating schedule. I ended up behind, and could feel a bonk coming on in the last 10 miles. Torq gel to the rescue, damn those things are tasty! Just had one on the Embankment, and tried to nail it down the Mall. That was pretty awesome, I had to give it the beans. Not just going to coast down there!

It's a hill within the M25 so one of the few within reach of the whole of the UK, Londoners. Ergo, 'the most popular hill in the UK'. :rolleyes:

Update: DOMS still bad, think it's from a stupid thing I did on the beach not just from the long walk - sprinting with the dog. I've not ran properly for probably 7-8 years, it felt good (guessing due to increased cardio) and didn't hurt my knees (running on sand) but don't think it was probably a good idea. Although it might be something I think about doing/training - a short 5km or something once a week. Heard of cyclists doing it to aid bone density?

No riding last night due to torrential rain. No riding this week due to packing belongings for the house 'shuffle' - we complete tomorrow, moving what we can (in the fiesta) from my parents house (where we're staying) for 2 days and have booked friday off work to move. Saturday morning I may get a chance to get out but will be utterly knackered from moving on the friday... If I am I'll get out on sunday! Counting down the days...! :)

It mainly received most of it's focus from the Olympic road race. I think that's where the fascination really comes from. People saw it 9 times on the TV and were like "damn, I need to ride that!".

probably! imo there are better climbs around that area :) if you really want some kind of challange, box his is just long/grindy but it isn't difficult as such.

and my time is super bad on it xD I stopped near the end of the segment, ate a cake and continued lol.

Seems like a bit of a no-brainer for the V-sprint wheels. Could get two sets for the same as the Archetypes! I just want something weather-proof, robust but under 2kg ideally.

How difficult is it to build a wheel? I could at least get exactly what I want then!

So you've only ridden it once?! :o

twice, first time was okay leaderboard wise :O I was in top 2k or something like that but that result is gone for what ever reason and got replaced by the ocuk one ha.

So: Ride 100 is out of the way, and I need to get back to a serious focus on weight loss and building more stamina and power. I was ok on Sunday, but some points I felt weak (climbing mainly, could have been the excess weight).

I've joined my local gym, mainly to allow me to do some swimming, but is there anything else that I can do in the gym that will enchance my fitness for cycling. Rowing seems to be a good shout? They also have WattBikes, so I'll be giving them a shot, along with my usual turbo sessions, and some weekend rides.

More cycling will assist with cycling. I would personally concentrate on core stability if in the gym as well as swimming for an all over workout and CV.

Diet is massive when it comes to weight loss and energy levels, probably more important than exercise so if you haven't sorted that out I would look into it.

Diet = weightloss

Wattbike = cycling gains.

I'd get yourself a TrainerRoad subscription and follow a plan. An ANT+ dongle will work with an iPhone/iPad so you can use it whilst at the gym.

Rowing & or swimming are wise choices for extra CV work, both low impact and full body. That said whilst they will assist there is no real substitute for more cycling :)

Will be heading over your way at some point so can get some miles in together and see if I can spot any useful pointers/cues you might find useful to help when climbing? Like 'Push it, maggot!', 'Squirm!' and 'Get to the choppah!'. :p

Get one of those pull along kiddie trailers and get grudas to sit in it shouting "Keep pushing!"
