Road Cycling

More cycling will assist with cycling. I would personally concentrate on core stability if in the gym as well as swimming for an all over workout and CV.

Diet is massive when it comes to weight loss and energy levels, probably more important than exercise so if you haven't sorted that out I would look into it.

Diet was sorted, but I've let it slip recently. Bad form I know. So getting back into it. Core stability is something I was going to look into. And yes, more CV is good. Just trying to find some good swimming training plans, I need somewhere to start. Used to swim a lot when I was younger.

Diet = weightloss

Wattbike = cycling gains.

I'd get yourself a TrainerRoad subscription and follow a plan. An ANT+ dongle will work with an iPhone/iPad so you can use it whilst at the gym.

Rowing & or swimming are wise choices for extra CV work, both low impact and full body. That said whilst they will assist there is no real substitute for more cycling :)

Will be heading over your way at some point so can get some miles in together and see if I can spot any useful pointers/cues you might find useful to help when climbing? Like 'Push it, maggot!', 'Squirm!' and 'Get to the choppah!'. :p

Haha, sounds good ;)

Already on the TrainerRoad, I just need to get my ass in gear and start on the plan properly to be honest. Been a bit lazy recently, and it's showing!

I've found running to be better than cycling for weight loss but perhaps that's because my muscles wasted away!:(

Euch running. Not for me. I achieved recent weight loss when my diet was sorted, and I've let it slip. So really it's nailing that, and getting some good CV work in. Did you use any swimming training plans when you were training for your Ironman Shamrock?

This is what I was using:

I stopped going as my local gym was over £60 a month and only found myself going a couple of times a month. If I'm not out on the bike then I do core work at home such as stretches, physio band exercises, as well as press ups etc. Plus I've got the turbo trainer to set up still.

I didn't follow any specific plan for any of the disciplines. I needed my training to be flexible so apart from entering a few specific races before the Ironman, my training was mostly ad hoc and dependent on the weather forecast!

For swimming I tried to do 2-3 sessions per week, with one focusing on drills for technique and strength and the other focusing on swimming a set distance.

The problem with cycling is I will do a big ride, not quite taking on enough calories during, then pig out afterwards and consume more than I burnt.:(

Ace thanks. I will take a look at that link :)

My gym isn't too bad, and I'll try and maximum use out of the swimming pool and rowing machines/WattBike/stability area.

Turbo is at home, but turbo is a morning thing.

Focussing on drills and then distance sounds like a good plan. Thanks :)

I was going to look for a fitness app for the gym: obviously for cycling we have Strava to keep track of everything, but rowing machine and swimming is harder to keep track of sadly :( Although MyFitnessPal might have functionality in there to add it, although I'd prefer something with a rough calorie caluclation.

Work in the mancave is progressing nicely for it's role as the bike torture chamber

I had the 5.1 speaker setup in the lounge at our old house but as the new lounge has wooden floor boards, hiding the rear cables would be a right pain, so it's found a new home :D It's going to beat squinting at my 14" laptop screen (when you can see for the torrents of holy water).

Also found a good way to store energy bars and gels

Saves digging around in a box to find the flavour you want.

Does not compute...

Now it computes

What you mean is "I get hungrier cycling and blow out after but don't get the same urge after a run". Most likely because it's shorter in duration and any under-fueling becomes a non-issue.

Calories burned, all being equal, etc etc.

Hey guys, sorry for the lack of contact. Work has been mental with holiday's and what not recently (my turn next week :) )

Slowly finding my fitness again after a few months of illness. I've cancelled all my targets for this year, but I'm only 34 miles from last year's mileage (at this stage of the year). Unfortunately, I am now billy no mates, as one of my training partners has just become a father, and the other is in Cornwall. Maybe it's time I bit the bullet and joined a club again (the first time didn't go well).

These landed on my desk this morning :D Can't wait to get them home.

Does anyone else here own a pair, I've watched the majority of Garmin videos, but wondered if anyone had any tips from first hand use?
I'll have to muster the energy to do another FTP at the weekend, oh joy!

Well, I guess there's an element of runs generally being shorter in duration and overall calories burnt, but I mean that I actually don't feel like I have much appetite after a run. Maybe due to my insides being shaken around.

On a long bike ride it largely depends on how well I fuel during as to whether I'm ravenously over-eating after.

I used to get quite hungry after a long ride but now I tend to have a protein shake when I get in and I don't feel like eating at all for a couple of hours. Then when I do a normal size meal does the trick.

I'm probably 20 LB's lighter than when I first started cycling but still got a bit of weight to shift. When it really comes into its own is situations like my last overseas trip. Walking along a mountain pass at 2500m in 35'C heat. People were dropping like flies but I almost felt guilty that I wasn't really struggling... other than with my poor head for heights :p

Benny^Coxswain? :D

If you've got time to dig around for a flavour, you're not pushing hard enough! ;)

Rubbish about losing your riding buddies, nobody at work now riding? Might be some newbies you can smash! Good work on the mileage, probably best to just match that and ease back in before revising your goals/aims?!

SoliD & Von have Vectors for a while. Not sure who else!?

What I'm getting at it you can't objectively say running is better than cycling for weightloss and then in another post disclose that in fact you often tend to over consume calories after a cycle but not after a run. The energy equation for the two completely changes.

Of course if you burn less calories running but don't over eat afterwards you're going to lose weight as opposed to burning more calories overall cycling & then over consuming calories afterwards creating a calorie surplus.

If your NET calorie consumption was the same neither would be 'better' but you obviously find running suppresses your appetite and therefore more suited but it doesn't make it any better just easier to adhere to ;)

I'm being pedantic :):p

Yes, you are being pedantic. I didn't objectively say running is better than cycling for weight loss!:p

The fact is you fatties just need to eat less and workout more.:D

Wiggins Core Bibs are finally arriving to Rapha this Friday. I’ll measure up this week but at 5’10 with a 30” leg and 32” waist I found the Castelli Volo in a Large to fit well, a minor touch long (84cm leg, nothing some hitching hasn't fixed) and when stood the shoulder straps are on the snug side but whilst on the bike they are perfect.

A medium in Rapha says 81-86cm (basically 32”) waist and 81cm leg so expect that to be the ideal size. Is anyone else here have similar proportions and a set of Rapha bibs. Do the straps come up short?

My quads can be a bit of a squeeze to get through the grippers (dat weightlifting girth y0) so hopefully Rapha bibs grippers aren’t like a Boa Constrictor...

Diet is definitely key to weight management/loss. I seem to have steadily put on a bit of weight over the course of the last few months despite riding more than ever. I think I ended up in the mindset of riding lots = eat whatever. My diet has never been especially bad but I clearly need to be more careful than I thought.

I've been there. When I started cycling I was just under 54kg. So I figured I could eat whatever I wanted. I stopped at 76kg, as my average speed was starting to sleep. A diet of fry ups and pizza was certainly not the way to go.

I'm at about 67kg which seems to be a good weight for my height. I still haven't got my diet perfectly correct, but it's far better than before.

yuck - 3 weeks off the bike including 2 week all inclusive cruise and back on it Sunday. Felt like i'd never ridden a bike! Awful 30 miles!!

Same run tonight again - feels like the start of the year, not the middle of it when your supposed to be fit!
