Road Cycling

Wiggins Core Bibs are finally arriving to Rapha this Friday. I’ll measure up this week but at 5’10 with a 30” leg and 32” waist I found the Castelli Volo in a Large to fit well, a minor touch long (84cm leg, nothing some hitching hasn't fixed) and when stood the shoulder straps are on the snug side but whilst on the bike they are perfect.

A medium in Rapha says 81-86cm (basically 32”) waist and 81cm leg so expect that to be the ideal size. Is anyone else here have similar proportions and a set of Rapha bibs. Do the straps come up short?

My quads can be a bit of a squeeze to get through the grippers (dat weightlifting girth y0) so hopefully Rapha bibs grippers aren’t like a Boa Constrictor...

Medium will be sorted for you at that sizing.

Diet is definitely key to weight management/loss. I seem to have steadily put on a bit of weight over the course of the last few months despite riding more than ever. I think I ended up in the mindset of riding lots = eat whatever. My diet has never been especially bad but I clearly need to be more careful than I thought.

I always find this time of year I'm slightly heavier due to taking my eye off diet and time trialling twice a week giving me an insatiable appetite more often than not.

I've found running to be better than cycling for weight loss but perhaps that's because my muscles wasted away!:(

Running generally burns calories at a faster rate than cycling or swimming since it is so dynamic, involves the whole body and you are constantly fighting gravity. Its relatively easy to burn 1000 calories an hour while running. The draw back is you can only do that for 2-3 hours unless you are training for an ultramarathon. When cycling you can get away with a 6 hour ride so even if you are only burning 600 calories an hour it adds up.

But I'm the opposite of you when it comes to post exercise eating. After a good run i will eat my house empty, the appetite is insatiable. So in my core marathon training period I put on weight but loose a lot in the the base-building period between training cycles. Cycling however I just feel quite sick afterwards and just sip water.

Another difference is on a bike you can almost consume enough calories to offset the work done but with running it is very hard to keep up, the shaking stomach also limits the amount of absorption. Long distance runners can find their stomach shutting down after a couple of hours.

So my Vector pedals came with 2 red cleats, which look slightly different to my normal SPD-SL cleats. Do I have to use the new cleats? As I fitted new cleats yesterday :/ Plus I really need the float that the yellow cleats give me.

Yes. You absolutely must use the Look (alike) cleats. SPD-SL cleats will not go in. You will, at best, struggle to pedal at anything above 4 rpm as you gingerly balance your incompatible cleats on top of the pedals. At worst you will flat out die.

Do vector pedals not use Look cleats? They won't work with your spd-sl cleats if so.

Thanks. I did not realise, and feel slightly stupid now. Does this mean I'll need new shoes, or is there some kind of adapter?

So I had a go at spinning out my single speed bike on the way home. Strava linky. One solitary achievement where I hit 29.5mph, which on my 42*17 single speed gearing apparently translates to 150rpm. Beautiful souplesse it was not.

Both Look and SPD-SL are three bolt, so you'll just need to unscrew the SPD-SL ones and put on the Look ones. I suggest you draw round the SPD-SL ones first and then try to fit the Look ones into roughly the same sort of position, subject to the fact that they're not quite the same shape, and then just be prepared to adjust them a bit as you get used to them. So do some short rides first and then build up once you're confident of the position, or smash it on the turbo if you've got one and see how you get on.

Thanks again for the advice. I guess I'll have to buy some pedals for my other bike.

Anyone need some SPD-SL 105 pedals, they've only done around 400 miles :)

I've just been through the same thing - ended up ebaying a pair of r540s.

Wiggle order has arrived, containing the following:

New mitts for commuting, as my current commuting ones are knackered.
New thin long finger gloves for the Autumn.
Cheap jersey to add to commuting stocks.
Lube.
New chain for the winter bike.
New saddle for the summer bike. I've gone for the wiggle Cosine titanium rail endurance saddle. Only £30, so gotta be worth a try.
Rainproof arm warmers. These need to go back. Wiggle's sizing uses the word "width" when it seems to mean "circumference", which is to say I can barely get them over the heel of my hand.

Ta :)

Do you know if the one included with the Vector has any float?

I would expect them to come with the highest level of float available as it caters for the majority of riders.

There you go: My P1 pedals were the same, came with the cleat with the largest level of float, though I will be reducing this shortly.

red is 9 degree, grey is 4.5 degree. Black is 0 degree
