Road Cycling

@Roady I might not make it in the 3 days :p Or even make it, but I want to aim for something either way. Push me training wise.

Put all my stuff together, just mounted the TV, will be using an old 2009 MBP until I can get a new PC off @platypus when he's back from hols! :)

Excuse the dusty floor... I am going to be PVA sealing that badboy soon. Now I have no excuse....

Just back from my first ride on the bike - 10 miles (yey me!). The 2 x issues are still present.

I can confirm:

Dork disc - definitely high pitched whine coming from there, when i unclipped just one of the 3 clips of the disc, noise stopped, re-clip and noise returns.

Rear cassette (check me!), the last 2 gears furtherst from the bike - the bike rides smooth in every gear, but when you select either of these 2 it is a loud constant clicking noise - loud, enough for others to hear when cycling past :(.

I have emailed the company, but still waiting in a reply. There is also a bike shop in my local village, so not sure what to do :(

Had our clubs annual hill climb last night and had the delights of the "locals" interfering and obstructing the final few riders.

Firstly a local old boy resident decided to stop about 1 yard past the finish line where there were about 15 people all stood cheering, possibly more, and then proceeded to drive down the road, and stop next to a car coming up the other way and had a full 3 or 4 minute chat obstructing the road so much one girl had to stop in her first ever TT/Hillclimb. I rode down and had reasoned conversation about obstructing the road, and the local lady had decided it was an access road so she was perfectly entitled to just stop and have a chat.

Always a delight dealing with completely ignorant and rude people, we weren't causing an obstruction and the road at the top even with cheering had people fully on the side of the road. The road is barely used and isn't even a cut through for anything.

I wasn't overly impressed at our club hill climb last year when another club decided to continue their club run slowly up our designated hill rather than take a diversion round it. Granted the road is open and free to use but I just thought it was a dick move from people supposedly on our side.

On the chain catcher point, the biggest issue people seem to have is chains being thrown outwards when shifting up rather than falling down the inside. I'm not aware of many chain catchers that cover both sides for a TT sized chainring (I know Aerocoach are bringing one out soon). Losing your chain = all your aero weenie gains gone so I just wanted the security.

Sounds like the limit screws need adjusting on the front derailleur. Have a look at your manual (they are available from Shimano if it didn't come with the bike) and have a look on youtube at some vids. Make a note of how much you adjust it and if you really stuff it up just set it back as it was

EDIT - Two things I assumed. 1) you aren't trying those gears in the smallest chainring are you? if so, that is almost always likely to cause some noise. The gear ratios overlap so there is never a need to do that. 2) Assuming you are in the big ring are you trimming the front derailleur as you get near the top of the cassette? Basically just operating the lever as if you were shifting into another chain ring should trim (move it a bit :p) the derailleur. As you go back down the cassette you may need to do the same the other way by moving the little lever about halfway through its travel. If should give you a little click to indicate it is now in the lower trim setting.

I did say i was a complete novice! I read/watched some stuff about gears for newbies and it said to not worry about the big ring to start with - so all my gear changes have been using the small ring.

So you are saying i should not use the 2 gears furtherest from the wheel whilst using the small front ring?

I was finding that i was using these 2 gears to start off from, moving up as i gained speed :(

R.I.P head position with the TV that high on the wall :p Head down, eyes up it is ;)

Phone attached to garmin mount for all stats I need on Zwift app :P

What's going on with the bar angle on that black/blue ultimate!

Woman. Had to move them up as with her hips/angle she couldn't get forward as much as she would like.

Potential pr0-hack for Elemnt users without Strava live segments...

Plot a route on RWGPS using cue items, deleted unwanted cues, insert custom cue items at the start & finish point of each segment.

Cue's should flag up in a similar fashion to TBT but I've yet to try this myself though will do soon.

I've had my (full sized ;) ) Elemnt just over a year now and can't ever see me returning to Garmin.

I attended my second club run of the year recently, poor show I know but have gotten plenty of solo miles in..., anyway I suggested the club stop using Garmin connect because it was a royal PITA to get routes on to any device that wasn’t a Garmin or for those not using GC.

Shortly after they switched to the RWGPS platform which of course in addition to Strava the Elemnt automatically syncs routes from over wifi  I’d not bothered with the TBT function prior to this but it caught my attention on the club run as the routes for each speed group all have turn cues on. And providing you plot your route properly, involving not clicking directly on junctions but after them, it seems to work pretty well indeed.

Reviewing my lap efforts for climbs at the mid-ride coffee stop with FT & Steedie last weekend on the companion app is just another nicety that you don't get with a Garmin. The companion app actively saving your ride every few minutes too gives some assurance that if it does ever die or fall off and get lost you don't lose the entire ride and have to try and recover it like I see many Garmin users do...

It’s praises are sung enough already without me repeating myself :)

Edit: oh :p and as FT discovered, if you chose to, you can broadcast your location to other Wahoo Elemnt/Bolt users. So that when you view the map it'll show their location in real time. So I could see FT waiting around the corner from our meet location. Equally you can watch someone falling of the back of the bunch too :D

Sorry, I misread as two gears furthest from the wheel :o

This page has a diagram showing the combinations of gears best to avoid- https://wickwerks.com/support/crosschaining/

Ta for that - so it seems i was cross-chaining (never heard that term before) as yes, i was small front to small rear and one up from smallest too. This is where the clicking noise was. So to stop the clicking noise i simply need to not cross chain - genius.

Still have that mosquito noise to sort................

and just had a reply from the place i bought it from:

The first issue may potentially be because of the plastic disc, this is not an integral part of the bike and is there for protection when assembling. Most people will remove this.

The second issue may be that the gears are not indexing properly and the rear derailleur may need adjusting slightly.

Everyone happy for me to remove the dork disc (lol).

@Lethal` you'll be pleased to hear that plans are afoot for The Tumble to be attempted on Monday! ;)

Excuse the dusty floor...
I was more concerned with the filthy front tyre!

Girl^bike = EZmode.

I'd have lost my rag and stood between them chatting so they had to move on. Nothing worse than ignorant and rude people ruining others fun for no reason than to be awkward!

That's neat, I've never thought to use cue's like that. Could be good to point out nasty upcoming corners/descents/junctions.

Seriously hovering over the Elemnt now... they seem to just be so far ahead in their release of features to Garmin
I wouldn't say 'ahead', but they've just been very active about releases and rather than just 'fixes' each updates brings obvious features and enhancements. You really feel like you're getting something with each, rather than behind the scene 'fixes'.

Mwhahaha, I'd heard of it but not seen it, you could play 'hide & seek' when you drop @Steedie on climbs! (harsh, but funny!) ;)

Love my ELEMNT too, even with the pain I had trying to get it updated at one point, since a bit of troubleshooting it's been flawless. Far less issues than I had with my Garmin 810. The Garmin just infuriated me when it lost rides/crashed or was painful when it went wrong. The couple of times my ELEMNT has gone wrong I've not got frustrated with it (trouble shooting has been logical) and have much more trust in it as a device. I was never a Garmin fan and doubt I'd ever go back without good reason. For the many years 'head start' they've had vs companies like Cateye, Leyzne and Wahoo they don't have much to show for it with their actual devices.

Are we having the bi-annual 'what does Roady do.to his chains' chat again?. I think he just really likes ordering chains
Haha yeah we are... Although I really need to order some as I don't have a spare which I'll obviously need in a week or twos time (I mean who gets a month out of a chain anyway?). :p

for his dungeon...
Ssssh, that was our secret! :(
