Yes I think I was more trying to say once you're used to blasting the **** out of your legs for 30 mins at a time then 20 mins of the same won't be as bad. :)

20 mins FTP test should be a piece of urine!
Do the full 60 mins to be sure ;) :p

I've not done a proper FTP test this year but looking at my Strava Power Curve for this year :
- 1 hour : 275w
- 2 hours : 257w
- 3 hours : 230w

[I'm 80kg]

Pretty happy with those considering they were done as part of longer rides and with traffic stops.

That's a pretty impressive power curve tbh, less drop off than I would expect. Guess you do a decent amount of longer rides?

The point is that the pace you do for 30 minutes is less than the pace you do for 20 minutes, because by definition if you're going as hard as you can for 30 minutes you aren't going as hard as you could for 20 minutes, same as you wouldn't be going as hard as if you were only going for 1 minute or 10 seconds or 1 second!

No, it shouldn't.

If you can ride 'comfortably' at Threshold for 20 minutes and aren't anywhere near your max HR come the end or 10/10 for RPE then you aren't riding hard enough. You can't use speed to reliably measure intensity because it's subject to too many variables, even more so when in a bunch.

It's like people saying they do sets of 5 consecutive reps with their 1 rep max in the gym, well then...

Did one this week in my gym (first since start of the summer) the instructor came over to me 3mins in and said "you can DEFINITELY go harder'. Looked down at my power output and was like wtf as I thought i'd overcooked it so tried pushing a bit harder..

Result was I had pretty much an identical average after 20mins as I did 3mins in - I guess I don't look like i'm suffering enough!

Not really - I've done a couple of 73ish mile rides but most are 60 miles. On solo rides (50% of my riding) I'm never resting on the pedals and even on downhills always stay above 220w, so just consistent power throughout the ride.
Club rides are slightly different where it will be maximum effort up hills (to not get dropped) and then rest/coast on the way down.

Managed to get quick 20 min power test in last night, slightly fluffed as half way through I had to get off my bike to recover a dropped bottle! :o

Some websites say deduct 5% and some 7% to get a rough FTP. What's the generally accepted figure?

I've never done an FTP test, but if you want to get a true figure, do the full 60 minute test.

But at least you now have an up to date FTP20 figure. ;)

Without warming up, then having a hard effort before to wear you down, that is just a 20 min best and nothing to do with your ftp.

If you're doing it properly then for 20mins you don't need a bottle - Take some before you start then go for it :)

I think my bottle is sort of my comfort blanket - i just wanted it within reach in case. I get water anxiety out on the road when i get down to 1/4 left :p

I took my cx bike out this morning. I bit off more than I could chew with some of the terrain - cobbled climbing is the suck - so ended up walking a fair bit of it. Hey ho. I'll have to do some more exploring to find something I can manage.
