Road Cycling

so the sports tax avoidance person of the year award will go to Mr Hamiton and Mr Froome will be out of the running ? - can't blame him for liking the hills around Monacco though.

Is the jury still out with respect to a caffeine ban ? last year there had been some internal pictures of the Tour buses, amongst other things, kitted out with some nice Italian espresso machines. - that would be a difficult addiction to give up.

You're right - its Terbutaline I'm referring to.

I have a brown one and a blue one - the blue one is Terbutaline and makes me heave if I ever need two puffs (hardly ever use it - perhaps if ive mowed the lawn without taking hayfever tablet).

Odd I occasionally have to have a Terbutaline inhaler in the form of a dry powder inhaler called Bricanyl Turbohaler, as I cant breathe properly during a bad hayfever season. Never made me feel like being sick, I can believe it enhances performance a tiny bit in that it opens up my airways and makes my heart race a bit. I used to be able to run a bit better after a puff on that when I used to run regularly

One shot of terbutaline is ok, but if I need a 2nd shot (super rare, I'd have to be in a right mess to need two shots) it makes me wanna puke, always has done - since my teens.

Anyway back to CF - he could have course get away with this, but hopefully for him his defence material isn't stored on a Sky laptop.

Oh dear Mr Froome! https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2017/dec/13/chris-froome-team-sky-reputation-abnormal-drug-test
I can understand being a little over - but twice the limit? Something Fishy?
My understanding is that the 'limit' is from the medication itself and is a fairly soft level where a TUE is not required, something I read said that the 'limit' may come from the recommended daily dosage of ventolin for a normal male adult, one which is probably not performing high intensity exercise outside for prolonged periods at altitude. I don't know if there are revised figures/doses for pro cyclists/athletes, but there probably should be!

I also wonder if the 'doesn't require a TUE' is for a normal inhaler usage, if he's taking it in tablet form it would be much more concentrated in a urine test... Also a double oral dose would spike a urine test if not absorbed into bloodstream? Also, taking it in a more concentrated form (like a tablet) it should probably require a TUE?!

if you heard the Guardian 'journalist' Sean Ingle on the R4 today this morning, fairly inarticulate,
the Guardian were annnoyed their 'exclusive' had been spoiled by Sky announcement, and during interview had already hung, drawn, quartered, stripped, Froome.
The Guardian have been getting worse, some of their anti-cycling rhetoric is getting as bad as The Daily Wail. They do seem to still love Wiggo though don't they?! :o

I get a little bit of Exercise Induced Asthma, particularly in the cold. Maybe I 'require' some of this stuff too!
Get a TUE with your prescription, or does a prescription count as a TUE for us mere mortals? :D

we'll have the usual song and dance about metabolisms and excretion and how the sun hit the Spanish mountains just right that one day and he was so awestruck by the beauty of the landscape that his body temporarily shut down and as a result he ended up with a higher level of it in his bloodstream than if he'd been looking at some concrete in the rain in Dudley.
I lol'd.

What actually happens is my coughing attacks prevent me from actually keeping it in my lungs long enough to soothe them.

It definitely doesn't have any performance enhancing effects when I use it.:p

URGH. 6800 shifter snapped a cable inside the shifter again. I wonder how much fun it will be later. I've got a spare shifter so there's a good chance that'll go on instead!
30rpm laps were fun on tired legs...

Some spontaneous black ice on the sketchiest descent in Richmond Park this morning. Fortunately van driver just before warned us there's a cyclist down and we could see police at the bottom and we took it super easy down there but one of our guys slipped out just in front of me. Got off and walked down the grass side at that point. No ice anywhere else.

Sketchy as hell here too, the heavy snow on sunday was followed by a cool day on monday (snow day for most, I stupidly caught a lift to work), a solid freeze on tuesday (again caught a lift) then wednesday (day off) we didn't quite have the thaw they'd forecast - temperatures did reach 3 degrees briefly but it was at around 3-4 pm as the sun was setting. We had some rain showers but with a freezing cold wind whatever had melted mostly froze again and only slightly thawed overnight. It was like an ice rink earlier but areas which had cleared from shovelling (like my drive) where clear, it's only the uncleared snow+melt+rain which has frozen hard. Carpark at work is like an ice rink as nobody cleared it or parked on it until yesterday. Roads themselves are ok! My housing estate is pretty horrific, with the drag towards the main road 50% ice. I might commute in tomorrow if we have a good thaw today. I don't see the point of riding in if I've got to walk 10-15% of my commute and wreck my cleats to avoid hurting myself! ;)

Zwifted last night, one of the fastest and most brutal races I've done for a while. Hello LTHR! #abused! :o

Need a big Zwift ride this weekend to get my mileage on track, really struggling with baby & weather to maintain any fitness!

Kinda frowned upon to link or talk about prices etc. I think you can get away (depending how much you've fluffled FT) with saying what you're selling and asking people to trust message you if interested, but I wouldn't go much further in here.

If another admin stops by you'll probably get more punished but FT isn't that big a meanie!

Impressive power and average speed there Roady.
Thanks. Power was misleading as some huge efforts & recovery with quite high power to stick in the group towards the front trying to affect race outcome rather than sitting in (for a manic sprint at the end). It was a huge group of 20+ riders so speed is misleading as huge draft effect, you could do 3.2-3.5w/kg and stick in the group but if dropped off the back it was a 4.5w/kg+ effort to get back on, most of the time I found myself doing 5.5w/kg to chase breakaways or to try and escape with 4.5-5w/kg digs on the front to drive things. Brutal! :o

Lots of B races you can get away with 4w/kg climbs and 3w/kg in group. Not this one!

After yesterday's "rest day" I was getting crazy ideas of taking the 45Nrth Gravdals off the fatbike's 29er wheelset, before a little hill rep session shortly, to get me over 6000m climbing so far this month (excluding the 500m that Strava didn't record on Monday)... But I've just seen sleet is predicted this afternoon and freezing overnight temps until at least Saturday morning.

... Better quickly drink this coffee and get out before mushy flakes put me off riding!

I never seem to get much luck with the drafting - I often find myself stuck in no mans land, in-between the pack I want to latch onto and the pack I've just dropped, with no-one to keep me company/take turns etc. It's under-appreciated just how much effort it takes to get from one pack to another, even with another wheel to help out. If ever I do make an attempt to break I generally wait for a hill - my low body weight means it's a bit less hurty :p Can't do that on these flat races though!

I do sense the drafting effect is perhaps a fraction too beneficial, not massively but maybe just a tad over the top. I don't know what % Zwift gives you in a pack.

Get the hood off or peel it right back. Take off all the small screws you can see and you will have easy access to the whole ratchet mechanism. The 11 speed shape seems to be quite good at snapping cables, probably down to the sharp turn as it leaves the shifter.

I've heard of this being a problem with 105 as well... Didn't grudas have a couple go like this?

I'd check your cable guides and outers where they meet the shifter if you're seeing this frequently. I've never broken a cable at the shifter end, not even seen a frayed bit there in several years all on 5800. Seen plenty at the derailleur ends!

Thanks for this, Jonny! I had tried the small before and removed the lower panel but never really saw any point to it. I thought I'd have another look to see if there are any other screws I can remove after that panel... nope... but that does allow me to remove a larger panel. If only I had noticed this before!

This nugget found inside...
