I always recommend lifeline prime armour now unless folk are after an out-and-out "fast" tyre

I've got them on my all-conditions bike (on the second rear) and I've previously run various big name stuff, up to GP4Seasons and I see no reason to spend the extra now

I think I won't bother with tubeless for now and will probably go with Lifeline tyres. I agree with @Saytan, the Prime Race and Prime Armour are pretty decent and very cheap.

Next decision is heart or head? Heart wants Campag Potenza hydro disc gruppo, head says Shimano 105 R7020 is financially the best option.:(:confused:

Paying an extra £300 to get Campag because I like the shifting ergonomics more than Shimano.:o

Paying an extra £300 to get Campag because I like the shifting ergonomics more than Shimano.:o

as a long-time campag man, the only way i'd go back to shimano is with electronics. the flappy brake lever annoys me.

Potenza is a powershift groupset though, need chorus if you want ultrashift. Depends how much you like multiple shifts on the thumb button I guess. I dump the thumb button quite a lot.

This is a replacement for my bike that had Veloce so I'm fine with Powershift. It's a winter hack so no Chorus or Record since it'll probably get stolen or crushed by a car!

What width are the Gavia/your rims and what pressures?

Good to hear you've no problems, I was always sceptical of the IRC Roadlites as the road.cc review, although good isn't a good reviewer. He bodges them on non-tubeless rims, has never run wider than a 23mm tyre and runs them at high pressures. There's better reviews here and here compared to Hutchingson. They do read very well but only being in 23mm and 25mm they're off the table for me as I want to stick to 28+ now. Might be one for those of you wanting a better alternative to the Schwalbe One?

Might have more luck with a dedicated tubeless tyres? I didn't even think it was possible to run GP4Ks tubeless
I'm not running them tubeless, sorry I didn't make that clear! Took to easy option this summer (as I already had a gp4ksii in 28mm on the shelf). :)

I was doing a bit of bike fettling tonight and spotted a split in my rear sidewall :( It doesn't look too deep but there are cords split and showing



You can also see the pink rubber layer although this doesn't really show in the photo. Is this ready for the bin or am I worrying over nothing?

I'm probably being over cautious as my last Pro4 Endurance split right across the tread and left me stranded.
Rubbish, certainly a cut from some debris. I've had a couple of those myself but not recently. What's the age of the tyre? Superglue and/or a tyre boot would probably be fine. The Endurance I got a cut on like that I rode for 200-300 miles and it was cut right though as I had inner tube showing, I stuck some electrical tape over the inside but wasn't convinced so replaced them. It held up but superglue and a proper tyre boot would be recommended.

What do people recommend for harsh country lanes these days? I'd want to stay 28mm and I'd like something with similar puncture protection to my Pro 4E's (or better). I'm thinking Schwalbe One maybe? Or try the new Michellin Power Endurance?
Mine used to be GP4Seasons but after riding the Specialized Roubaix Pro which came on my Diverge they where far far tougher. Did 2 winters and probably could do 2 more on them but some of the surface is quite cracked now. Not cut from damage, cracked from rubber age/deforming due to me running them quite low (<50PSI at times!). They're heavy but utterly bombproof. Cheap too, I think on par with the Primes'. Larger air volumes so the 25mm have air volume of a 28mm, the 28mm volume of a 32mm. Quite a few guys from one of my clubs are riding them now (on non specialized frames!) as the LBS guys have been recommending and fitting them.

Although mostly depends on the frameset! Decided yet? ;)

There is something really quite sad and pathetic about how I feel right now. This is after I buried myself on certain Strava segments on my commute to work, only for my Garmin to not save the ride. I used to be all about getting out on your bike in the open air. Now I'm in a bad mood because there is no proof of my efforts digitally.

Haha! Better than having to move my entire brake lever to shift meaning I can't brake and shift at the same time.:D

Good call, gotta love that blue! Although it wouldn't match any of my kit! :rolleyes:

Hunt are pretty much my go to recommendation, even though I don't own any! Know several guys with them and they're all really happy. Several of them after trying cheap carbon/cheap Cosine/Prime etc first.

I bought a set of Hunt Aero Light Disc wheelset to replace the heavy Giant wheels.

I know you're not doing tubeless but the tyres went on with ease and inflated with a track pump without sealant.

Hunt support was decent and delivery was next day.

I've been reading the Bikeradar forum thread to see what is recommended and they seem to be the go to tyre. That said I am not yet committed to paying 50 quid a pop so will definitely look at other options (even going non-tubeless).

The Gavia tyres say 25mm but they are clearly not that wide. I've played around with the pressure and I am currently running them at about 90 for both (I am 82Kg). I would like to go 28mm, but I'm not sure the TCR frame will accept them and I will need to do some research and testing!

TBH Prime Armour will probably do the job fine. Maybe I'll just go for those, especially as I'm only changing the rear.

Annoyingly it has just over 1300 miles on it. My last Pro4E went at 1100 miles with a sidewall split hence why I want to try something different. I do ride on some shocking bits of road I guess.

Again and again hearing good things about these. Maybe even more than the Mason x 4 Season which are superb as a winter wheelset.

I'd be surprised if it didn't fit 28's as it came with 25's although certainly worth checking other peoples experiences. I had terrible problems with clearance on my Giant Defy 1 2015, even 25mm had less than 4mm clearance to the rear brake stay (rim brakes), but it did come with 23mm tyres.

Do you use an ELEMNT? Opinions?

I've been looking at upgrading my unit as I have started to get issues with my Edge 500. It is probably 7 years old so I guess it has has its fair share of use.
ELEMNT here, had it around 20 months (since the start of 2017). Around 500 hours, 8000 miles in 1200 rides and it's going strong. A few minor issues but only lost part of a ride once (battery ran flat), have had it freeze a couple of times but it generally sorts itself out and doesn't lose any of the ride. Have only needed to do a hard reset on it 2 maybe 3 times. My problems are only generally when following a course on it, not usual day-to-day commuting. Battery life is still great, features too and constant updates for it still (although the last year or so they're generally fixes rather than new features).

Considering I had a Garmin Edge 810 that barely lasted over a year, with around 6 months of crashing, generally getting more buggy and causing more problems as time went on, I'm 100% a convert.

The ELEMNT might be quite chunky/'ugly' and without a colour touchscreen missing some of the features of the Garmins - but I'll take a reliable unit I can depend on with longer battery life and very little fiddling required any day of the week.

Annoying. Admittedly it looks like a cut from debris, not from a pothole or such, would cut/mark any tyre!

had some bibs delivered today but not sure what to make of them. The rapha core make me look like I've got nothing down there but a camel toe, the asos t equipe evo are the oposite, make me look like a pornstar with it's shaped area. Random pics off internet, not me.
/cameltoe crew signing in. Totally agree, but standing admiring my manhood stood up straight in cycling shorts is not a regular past time of mine. I care more about how they ride! ;)
