Robert Jordan’s fantasy epic The Wheel of Time coming to TV

This video really breaks down what is wrong with the last episode of Wheel of Time, Series 2, episode 8.
Agree with all of this - re rands wound, it's another ******* ridiculous change anyway as in the book:

Rand gets slashed by the dagger later on that allows for some excellent interaction between the yellow ajah and the asha'man, which in turn leads to more of the ajah questioning if their whole approach to gentling men that can wield siadin has been wrong

Found it a little unnecessary personally - from memory we get a general gist of lan/moiraines backstory throughout the main series as well as what sets moiraine and siuan on their path to find the dr.

Should I skip the prequel and just go to book 1 then?

I've enjoyed this. Seems to be the only people who don't are those who read the books, so I'll happily ignore the books and continue enjoying the show!
I'm in a weird place.

Never read the WoT books, gave up on the show.
Never read the Shadow & Bone books, enjoyed the show.
Never read The Witcher, just played the games, and thought S3 was a turd.
Read the manga AND watch the anime, and loved the One Piece live action.

All I want is a good TV adaptation of The Gentlemen ******** series.

It was renewed up to season 3 when they dropped the 1st 3 episodes of s1. S3 is currently in pre production.

Season 3 is further along than that. They started filming in April. It'll probably release next year.

If they're still planning on having eight seasons, they can't keep skipping years. Rosamund Pike would be pushing 60 by the time the last season lands, and Joshua Stradowski would be in his 40s.

I think you should read the prequel but not until you've read the first 10 books, which is when it was published. The prequel assumes quite a lot of knowledge and probably reveals some things you're better off finding out from the main series.

So I finally got around to finishing this season off, I really struggled through episode 6 and the Moiraine plot. They changed so things that affect characters motivations and development. Rand's plot is a complete mess. Moiraine and Lan's plot makes no sense and has plainly re-written because they have Rosamund Pike as the named star and book 2 is Moriaine lite. So we get new plots that are meaningless at the expense of key elements of charcter development.

We didn't need a lesbian relationship between Moiraine and Siuan and that whole Aes Sedai plot was at the expense of Rand's development. Instead of Fal Dara and Rand becoming initied in Borderland sense of honour, the long journey with Ingtar and Selene not Lanfear encouraging him we get some nonsense in Cairhenin. Rand hasn't got a reason to have picked up Borderland honour code and he hasn't had a real chance to learn to sword fight. Which is just as well as the 2 swordfights are missing. Lan was supposed to be hardened narrowly focussed man committed to a cause absolutely who develops bonds particulalry with Nyaneve and Rand that will change him in the long run. God knows what this Lan stands for.

The Egwene plot was progressing well and faithfully until the last 30 minutes of the season, her path is about the desperation of powerlessness it utterly frames her later development. Rather than being saved by her friends who are effectively superfluous to the plot, she girl boss saves herself. Then she saves Rand. FFS they ruined part of the character development at the last gasp. It feels like Hollywood can't have a woman not save herself anymore even when the rescuers are other women it seems.

Matt is borked because no Hunt no Matt journey, but I'll give them a pass because of the actor situation.

Perrin is now a murderer. The point about Perrin's journey is that he was unfairly blamed for things that he didn't do. Darkfirend and betrayer of the Children in Falme. But now Dain Bornhold is the honest one he's seen Perrin murder his dad. The whole point was supposed to be Perrin's innocence.

The lack of Ishmael wound, the lack of sword fight, the lack of deliberately allowing the attack to secure the victory (Sheathing The Sword) is an essential element of Rand's Borderland honour journey and pee' away.

The Forsaken being so weak, our characters are supposed to be at their mercy almost until 2/3rds the way through the series. There will be no peril left at this rate. Ishmael should a clicked his fingers to deal with Egwene, he has hundreds of years more knowledge in the power from an immeasurably more sophisticated time.

The first 2 books and first 2 seasons were the easiest to stick to the direction laid out by Jordan and the changes they've made don't improve things the replacement is worse than what we could have had.

For most of the season half the plot has gone well and half has been a mess but the finale in particular the last 15 -30 minutes made more stuff worse. It was well made, great costumes, the action was nicely done, the production values are great and if you haven't read the books your not exposed to the flaws in character development the creators have made. So the casual fan is probably liking it and I can understand why. But I see the road not taken and the future pay offs undermined and I'm sad and annoyed.

These books plainly need streamlining especially later in the series but I'm worried that the choices they're making now when the plot should be easy to deliver exposes the weakness in thinking that will lead to some hideous choices down the line.

Personal preference end of the day, if you're enjoying it carry on, if you've just started I dont think anything is lost by jumping to book 1.

Just stuck with the prequel as I was quite a few chapters in. Absolutely loving it. No not McDonald's. Can't wait to get stuck into the main book.

I take it Swan and some of the other sisters in the tower are not in the main TV series?

Not yet, but who knows in the future as the tv show isn't really following the books with any sort of certainty - there shouldn't be any re-occuring characters outside of Moiraine/Siuan/Lan - still think they will at some point pull a little switcheroo and say it's a retelling of the wheel

I agree with almost all of this. They've borked the storyline for future series.

To be honest, I only watch because of Moiraine (and Rand to a degree). If Rosamund had barely been in season two, I wouldn't have got to episode 5. In fact, I think she's been missing in one episode (2-2?) which I didn't like one bit. But it's picking up now, I've just resubbed to Prime so I get to see episodes 6-8 on my new TV in HDR (hopefully). :D

Finished the prequel book New Spring. Really enjoyed it. A couple of questions.

Moraine and Siuan was never lovers just close sisters. Was this something the show shoe horn in or does this develop later in the books?

Can see what some of you meant lots of content and backstory missed it. I can understand why. There only so much time in the show.

Not in the books at all.

It's mentioned in the books that novices sometimes hook up - they are called pillow sisters (its not explicitly stated its a sexual relationship), It isnt something that continues once they are accepted/aes sedai. The moraine/suian thing is entirely new, for the usual reasons, especially as they both have 'relationships' with the opposite sex in later books.

I don't have a problem with female lovers and can see why they did it in the show to save time and explanation between their relationship but that's a very lazy way of telling their story. Cheap Asda version indeed.

So glad I listened to you guys and got the books. Might not be everyone's cup of tea but definitely ticks the box for me.

One down 14 to go.

Robert Jordan did say it was a thing at a convention Q+A but not in books.

Watched up to ep.2 of the second season, but just can't seem get motivated enough to carry on. Might watch it in drips and drabs at some later point, but for now....just no.

That’s great news. Once again I thoroughly enjoyed WoT with only Rand’s final battle disappointing. Folks need to stop comparing to the books particularly now we’re waaaaaaaay off track from them. I think we’ll see the benefits of a streamlined TV show over the next few seasons as some of the books could be easily compressed or even missed completely.
