Robot Wars returning to BBC2!

The audience seemed like to much pre recorded as well, could hear added laughter when Dara made a joke to the teams.

I liked that we had mics in the team booths, not sure we had that last time? Was great to hear their chatter.

Razer was a damp squib but Behemoth made a really good showing, always liked that robot.

Razer looked like it was struggling to pierce that toilet roll shaped robot at the beginning so perhaps this new armour they're all using has rendered their weapon useless.

Always wondered why so many teams use an axe but no one has ever tried a pneumatic piercing spike or something similar.

Well that one was just a stainless steel pipe, I don't think the armour was anything special. Maybe they just hadn't upgraded the robot or practiced much

Definitely remember seeing one. I'll find it.

I think there was a spike bot once but iirc the spike was tiny and on the front wasnt it. What would be good is a lance or something. To joust with other robots. Or have a robot that did damage by smashing full force into a bot then shoot the spike into its gizzards.

Also why cant we see robots with more deadlier weapons. Like flamethrowers, nades, chainsaws, mini machine guns strapped to its sides. :D Axe, flippers and discs are all samey, some do better some dont. What im getting at really is id like to see a few new style of attacks that use new tools that arnt the usual suspects. If thats possible.

One of the spike robots was http://robotwars.wikia.com/wiki/Nemesis btw.

flamethrowers do nothing (Sergeant bash was always crap) chainsaws are crap (which is why they change matilda to a flywheel) grenades and machine guns...I'm sure you can work out why they aren't allowed.

Yeah cost, safety, image (you think they want a kid friendly show with assault rifles?) and how are these robot builders going to get machine guns? :p

There was one on BattleBots but it was like a blow torch that worked well.

Tough to tell :p

I look for good driving more than good weaponry. Sure it's nice to see the odd incredible flip or spinner ripping a robot apart but I always like stuff like Panic Attack that was just really well built and driven.

I'd like to see them bring back the side contests in future series too, stuff like obstacle courses and the pinball points run.

Carbide was seriously impressive. Not really sure what the point of those "cluster bots" was, besides laughing when one of them got flipped about 10 feet in the air they seem to be there just to give another team member something to do. They're far too small and light to have any effect on any of the full size robots.

Razer was apparently just the same but had gained quite a bit of weight.

It's a shame we didn't get to see Razer get destroyed by Carbide.

I think so too, that blade they had was around 2500rpm? I think razer would have been shredded, it was sending the much bulkier behemoth flying as well.

Yeah you could hear them in the old series. Although I think they used it more in this new one and it was clearer. Weapons wise I thought it was a good mix. Flippers soon became king in the old version. Also Carbide reminded me of Hypnodisc for the damage. The cluster bots although ineffective it was nice to see a team doing something different. Imagine if you had a robot that split
into two one with an axe one with a disc yet combined it was even more ruthless!

What I found curious was at the end of the first battle one of the Roboteers said they had 2 hours to get them ready for the next round. How long were the audience there!! Normally you see about 2½ to 3½ hours recording for a half hour show (although when we went to see the Preston walk out episode on Buzzcocks we were there for 5 hours!). Recording must have been lengthy for this.

Chris Evans is out of work and experienced at filling the 8PM slot on a Sunday.

I think he would have suited the Robot Wars 2016 lead presenter role really well, if they couldn't get Craig Charles, but obviously he was a bit busy when this was being rebooted...

I thought it was a decent start. It's a bit rusty, and a touch too long (the old 45min time would have suited it more) and Dara really didn't have the passion associated with Robot Wars or any idea about mechanics, but overall it was still good old fun, with a bit of robot death, fun and teams helping out each other, just like it used to be.

I really liked that they introduced a bit of education too (but not so much that it diluted the show), with chats with the judges and in particular the legend that is Prof Noel Sharkey talking about robotics in a wider sense.

As a 2016 reboot goes I'm happy with that.

They'll film all of the series together, so most, if not all of the teams will be present at the same time, filming on consecutive days and I'm sure with battles from other episodes in the gaps between the rounds we saw today.
