Robot Wars returning to BBC2!

The big one (Gabriel) was just a poor imitation of Stinger in the end. It didn't look nearly as sturdy and it's weapon seemed to do absolutely nothing. Didn't seem as easy to control either.

What good robots did we lose to falling in accidentally?

For those that feel a bit nostalgic, there's a good documentary on YouTube about the creation of the first series of Robot Wars.

Interesting how they essentially built the first house robots in 5 weeks... Including spray painting Sgt. Bash on the first day they were due to shoot. Ps ignore the terrible Mark Lamar bit at the beginning :p

Axes and circular saws are pointless wastes of time, but if everything were a spinner it would be pretty boring.

I agree about the saws, I haven't seen an effective one yet, and I don't think they're allowed cutting disks in case they shatter.

But at least a heavy axe/hammer has the chance of knocking a connector loose or shock damage to electronics so it has some use if the driver is skilled enough.

They're allowed but they cannot be hardened, due to the shatter risk.

FRA regulations said:
12.3 Rotating Weapons
The speed of any rotating weapons - e.g. circular saws, carbon or steel cutting discs - must not exceed the manufacturer's specification. The manufacturer's specification must be available for inspection.

12.4 Hardened Blades
Commercially manufactured, hardened steel blades that may shatter are not allowed.

It seems to be a big problem landing a hit for most of the axe/hammer bots. I am surprised no one has tried pincers ala Dead Metal to hold the other bot so they can smack it repeatedly with the axe/hammer instead of a couple of awkward glancing blows per fight.

I watched a few of this series and enjoyed it. The worst bit for me is the experts opinion. They just talked complete rubbish.

I'm sure I saw a player robot with pincers in the early heats. I think the problem is getting the pincers to close at a decent speed and so capture the opposition. I also think there are weight limitations so once you add pincers, an axe and the necessary power gubbins there's not going to be much left for armour, etc.

I recommend watching the final episode of Battbots if you haven't seen it already. Some truly awesome quarter final matches.

Beta (old Terrorhurtz team) vs Tomstone is possibly one of the all-time greats already.

The best and most entertaining robot didn't win unfortunately, but it was a a reasonable waste of six hours!

Especially when I remember that I sat through 8 episodes of Lost.

Managed to get through the whole series yesterday in a few hours, skipped most of the talky talk bits on the early episodes and just watched the battles. Eased up on that on the last couple episodes though and watched some of the pit stuff.

I think I prefer the 1v1 set up Battlebots has over what was in the latest Robot Wars.
