Robot Wars returning to BBC2!

Just watched this and....wtf. What was that "Wrecks" bot doing? Seemed to be shuffling along before spazzing out and being totally useless. Did the designers of foxit have a hand in this? :p

Enjoyed the series, hopefully with some more tweaks and improvements we'll see an even better series 2. :)

I know in the old robot wars (UK) walker style robots had a massively increased weight limit allowed, not sure if battlebots have/had the same but it could be something similar.

At least the designs aren't basic cuboids or wedges, that's all I'll say :p

There's some interesting designs on battlebots. I'd love some UK builders think outside the box and build something unique. I'm drawing a blank, but every time I see battlebots clips I think how cool they look. Maybe it's the weight limit or increased flexibility with the weapon rules, but there's very little aesthetic design to the UK bots.

Watching the Robot Wars making of, you realise that they really tried to give the house robots some personality, instead of making basic cuboids with wheels. Shame really because every fight usually ends up with the same types of bots.

Wow the bots on battlebots are in a different league to robotwars  don't think they were made in 4 weeks in a shed though looks like no expense spared , still entertaining enough not too keen on the presenting style but that's what fast forward is for hehe

A lot of sponsorship as well i think, you can see adverts on some of the robots. And its just typical American fashion to have to do it bigger and more over the top, the referees and the announcers and intro guy just make me want to dish out a few slaps.

Sponsorship, adverts? The only ones I have seen is for their own company name, or the bots name.

I think I saw on reddit that a CAD or machining error meant they were over the weight limit and had to change things last minute. So they ended up with that spazzy thing.

I was going through a load of these vids a few weeks ago on YouTube and seen a few that seemed to be sponsored, just random vids i came across both old and new.

Could also be rich people with a lot of spare time :p

One of the robots (chomp) is supposedly semi autonomous which makes it track the target to face in the right direction. Can't imagine that was cheap :o

Arent some of the decent bots on Battlebots UK teams? I wouldnt be surprised if the US show paid towards the robots so they dont get any MDF ones lol.

I have yet to see any of these amazing battles on battlebots though. To me it just looks like the same kind of stuff as Robot wars, but raw sound added from the arena so it sounds more brutal, sound effects and intense music and over the top announcers to make it seem more exciting. The robots arent that great, best one I saw was the UK team and minotour. Like the video posted above by Gerard, looks like it was built out of meccano lol.

Battlebots does seem more gimmicky though, a lot of the robots seem to have flamethrowers and they seem to be for show and nothing else. The only effective flamethrower was on that robot "complete control" as it grabbed another robot, held it up and fired the flames directly into it. Warhead has a flamethrower with a spinner and its the spinner that does the damage, the flame is just there to make it look fancy.

All these drones flying around with flamethrowers that do absolutely nothing just gets a bit cringe-worthy.

There was one (Witch Doctor?) that knocked one of the flyers out of the air and it exploded. I agree that the flyers are pretty much tactically pointless but anything that causes more explosions is good in my book.
