Rome 2 : Total War

I don't understand why they would cull it back? surely if they can make it look that good, but it's resource heavy possibly... stick that as the Extreme or Ultra settings??

Did they ever make it look that good though, or was it just a video?

Looks like it to me.

It doesn't matter what system you have, it will not look like the videos and screenshots.

The best thing about this release so far is the angry Joe review.

Just watching the soldiers climb the siege tower to jump off the top and land OUTSIDE the walls is just the perfect metaphor.

Play the Carthage battle under the historical battle menu, not as part of the campaign and it will be much more like alpha.

Have you actually done this? I have just done it - where are all the textures? The cobblestones? The smoke rising, the skybox? The buildings? The depth of field? The way the walls crumble under fire? The way the troops move and engage? The view down from the mount? Hell even the sublime anti-aliasing? It looks nothing like that video and my PC is no slouch.

They were either running it on "Deep Blue" or something has been majorly borked in the last 12 month or - and here's the crutch - it was a PR video in akin to Aliens Colonial Marines (Sega also wasn't it?).

I'm probably one of the few that actually is really enjoying this game, but that video to what we have now stinks of marketing and accumulating pre-orders rather then delivering the goods to me.

I've played over 50 hours on the game in 6 days, and I have torn it to pieces. I'm not sure what that says about me or the game.

It's pretty much a disaster, and there's no getting over that, the terrible AI, the bugs, the BS graphics and every other issue that has been well-documented all over the place. We have been conned and lied to, the videos and screenies prove that.

Yet, tomorrow morning I am starting another campaign and looking forward to it, it's a really bizarre gaming experience.

I'm playing a game that's 80% broken overall, if we divide the game into map and battle, then 50% is totally and completely useless. But the 20% of the whole, that is good is really really good.

It just makes you wonder with another 12-18 months of development and testing, consulting with the fan base, and letting us tell them what's wrong and how to improve it, and with quality people working on it on their side what we could have had.

I would have waited another 2 years, it would not have bothered me, I have tons of games to play, I can happily still play R1 with RTR again (10 year old graphics and all), in fact i'm going to, or played some more 3rd age, or Stainless Steel - or finally given S2 some real time, or played modded Empire properly.

It's just a huge missed opportunity.

8 hours and no.

I can't. Don't know why people even try. I... actually feel somewhat distraught over the state of this game, and I didn't even think I was a huge fan of the TW series. I guess after nearly 700 hours in Shogun 2, I just expected more from Rome II.

I'll be back to the game when I hear it has made sizeable improvement. I'm just glad there is Shogun 2 to fall back on.

Just watched* angry joe review, hilarious video. However I am not experiencing most of the problems he's referring to.

No performance issues or graphical glitches, AI is quite aggressive even though I play on normal. battles are no easier than in rome 1, it's the same thing put pikes in defensive position at a choke and they can take out hundreds of enemy troops. Perhaps there's a bug specific to extreme difficulty where AI is too passive.

Only bug I had is when during sieges on my cities the enemy AI does not attack me.

Edit: On a side note, what's up with flags in non-seige battles, is this a bug or everybody at CA were stupid enough to think that it'd be a good idea?

I was going to buy a new PC just for this game, I don't think I'll bother :(
As someone who still plays RTW 1 with the RS mod to this day I am truly gutted at the utter failure this game seems to be.

This post gave me quite a giggle. Fails to recognize the main criticisms of the game even when someone broke them down for you.

Here is a big clue. When the game and if the game is patched to perfection, performance wise the bugs gone, you are still left with a trash game.

Its not the bugs, its not the performance. Its so much more. You even alluded to one in the comical edit you made.

Am I saying game is amazing? I am praising it? How am I overlooking the problems of the game?

I said I do not personally have most of the problems he is referring to.

I find it funny that some people like you are so butthurt that they have to personally attack everybody who brings any bit of sense to this whining fest.

You recommended watching the Angry Joe review of TW:RII, where he spoke about the exact issue you just complained about. That is all.

I just had to quit a game as all my troops decided to start floating around about 10 feet of the floor.

I'm done with this now I have put in a good few days and the game is just stupidly broken. They have taken a great game and just ruined it tbh.

I will come back to it at a later date and see if anything gets fixed or improved.

I found out about the review from this thread, checked it out. What I said was, it was hilarious ie it made me laugh. It was comically presented. I then said that I have not experienced most issues he is referring too (most means majority but not all ie most issues are not present in my game but some are).

Lastly I did not complain about the flag in non-seige battles, some people here sit on TW forums and may have more precise information about future bug-fixes. It was a genuine question are flag in non-siege battles there to stay or will it be changed.

Edit: oh lord, in my comment it's "just watch", was supposed to be "just watched"

:p

No worries.

That Angry Joe video inspired me to very quickly write this PDF (sod any mistakes) whilst also reading the manual - for the first time and that's a new low for me - and worded around that page a little (please take down link if OTT but it's how I feel)...

This game reminds me of AvP colonial marines. It was a shocking game panned by most people, but you always get a few who like it. I've chosen to listen to the majority in this case! Learnt from my previous mistake.

Was hoping by now people would be reporting good news but this page makes me feel sad. Thank god I don't pre order games anymore!

They need to make it law that people can get a refund on software within 24hours. This whole no refund nonsense means publishers keep releasing junk knowing no one can return it! It's a complete farce!

1. Release fake video and hype the game up
2. Release said game and lots of people buy it based on what was shown due to lack of a demo
3. Publisher laughs as people can't be refunded so they keep all the money

How is that even legal?!

I am in exactly the same boat tbh. Still really enjoying it!
