Rome 2 : Total War

Is there a way to change difficulty during a campaign? I swear I had it on normal but I have most of Europe and can go at many turns without anyone bothering to attack me.. noones being very aggressive. :\

I want to know what happened to this :

Because its not the same game. At all. No amount of settings will make the game look like this, all the battles lack atmosphere and substance. I'm massively disappointed by the whole thing, mainly because yet again the hype train sells you a lie, they even show you a game which clearly doesn't exist in the final form.

This is the worst release in the Total war franchises history IMO! Even Empire was more playable on release, I thought they had learned a lesson from that game as for me Shogun 2 was playable day one with only minor issue, but alas Rome 2 is a bit of a damp squib I'm sure in a few month it will be in much better shape but people rightly judge in reviews on what the game is like now not what it might one day become, after all there are no garentees that these problems will ever be fixed (I'm sure they will be) but you can't judge a game on what it may become IMO.

I've been playing the campaign for a good while now.

I've not experienced any of the crazy bugs. Only a couple of crashes and a couple of units getting stuck at the top of ladders once or twice, nothing game-breaking IMO.

I have to say I'm not thrilled with the game though. It lacks the atmosphere of some of the earlier editions (Rome, Med2, Emp) and just doesn't feel right to me.

The only way I can describe it is that earlier TW games felt more 'solid', like they had more 'substance'. Whereas Shogun 2 and now Rome 2 both feel like they're missing something.
I feel like I'm rushing through campaigns clicking turn after turn and not really thinking about anything. Just "build here, train here and attack here".
On the other hand, in past games, I've felt really involved and interested in everything going on. Even watching the AI turns! (S2 and R2 I tend to skip them now). I felt pulled into the politics and relations between nations, now I just look for available trade routes (where poss) and declare war on anyone else.

It's just not the same.

So, to me at least, it's the game-play that's a disappointment - not the state of the game.

(I could have gone into more detail but this post felt long haha)

Much better with patch 2 beta, but they need do get rid ofv the capture points in open battles :)

I honestly don't think they will. It was a design decision. Like an earlier post mentioned: it's the way in which they've countered the possibility that, with the new Line of Sight system, defenders could simply run and hide for an entire battle to win via time-out.

The rest of us get the beta patch 2 sometime this week right? I had a skim of the patch notes and it seems very comprehensive so I'm looking forward to it.

What happened to 2-handed weapon units? Everyone has a shield i was at least expecting the Berserkers or Painted Ones to have big swords ;)

Now that we all know that everyone should share YOUR almighty opinion on this travesty, we can hopefully fix our ways.

We're the idiots apparently.....
I'm simply pointing out that a community which votes company of heroes 1 & 2 that differently are obviously pretty stupid when the core game mechanics are pretty much identical - they let the hype & disappointment override sense & reason then give stupid 0 votes for a game which isn't that bad.

The same applies here, Rome 2 has plenty of flaws but it isn't significantly worse than the other total war games as the core of the game is still almost identical.

The community can't say all the rest of the total war games are 10/10 but Rome 2 is 0/10 when 90% of the game is the same just with a few stupid choices & bugs which knock it down, don't get me wrong - I'm not saying it deserves scores to match the previous total war games - but the kind of silly scores it's getting give a false impression to perspective buyers (who deserve honest & reasonable reviews to read)

If they do insist on this kind of public outcry emotional wreck style voting then it simply means people will just ignore public voting scores (as I have for some time for this very reason).

But you could say the same for all the people blindly giving it a 10/10 when it is cleary no where near a 10/10 game....

It all evens out... some people need to just suck it up and realise that the game is a dissapointment and that the metacritic user reviews reflect this.

As far as i know, Rome 2 hasnt been subject to russians getting angry and rating it down due to how the russians were depicted in the game a la Company of Heroes...

Rome 2's reviews are from genuinally ****ed of customers.

I agree with this, while the game is definitely not a 1/10 game it is definitely not a 9/10 + 10/10 game either as it is clearly not finished. I also think that just because other Total War games were a mess at launch we shouldn't except the state it was released in. We played full price for a finished game, not something that can get a patch later.

Look on the bright side; at least thanks to the volume of sales this time around they appear to have taken the message and are actively addressing the issues in a prompt manner. Normally you have to wait for the first expansion pack to fix any problems with the base game.

I'm enjoying the game so far and other than the ocasional CTD during a town seige I havent encountered anything game breaking. 8/10 from me.

Has anyone tried playing the iceni? I can't get anywhere with them. I declare war on one of the guys near to me and we just seem to keep trading armies over and over as we both have 1 territory and replenish at the same rate?

Also I can't understand their tech tree. What building do I need to get something better than the basic melee units?

I am currently playing as the Iceni on normal and finding it easy, rolling over Britain and northern France. In regards to better units, you have to upgrade certain red cloured buildings but I'm not entirely sure either. I took over Scotland & Ireland and have much better choice of units there than in my own home province.

I've been playing as them, conquered all of the british isles except cornwall so far. Biggest problem I've found has been rebellion in scotland and ireland, necessitating me keeping two armies there.

Am starting to gain territory in france as well.

Tech tree I've paid little attention to so far, but it doesn't seem to get you much in terms of better units.

I've conquered all of northern Europe with the Iceni, they are pretty easy to play with. Just build up a couple of armies with decent stack size at the start and then go to war. I conquered Wales first, then Scotland, Ireland and Devon. I took the Welsh city with just the default army you get when you start iirc. Just fight the battles on the battle field instead of auto-resolving. At the start I used mercenaries really early on to boost recruitment, but remember to get rid of them afterwards they are horribly expensive.

As to buildings, you need to go with Artisans 1st to unlock the higher tier military stuff. bronze workshops and blacksmiths will unlock better infantry and siege weapons respectively. For cavalry you need to build a tier 1 farm and then a horse farm at the next tier. Right-click on them to see what they do.

As Iceni I prefered researching Tavern to unlock "Painted Ones" (yellow building) as not only does it unlock better swordsmen units it also grants happiness, compared with the bronze workshop etc (red building) for Spear Bands etc that all generate Squalor.

Better units and happy populations? Job jobbed :)

I just noticed that capture point in open battles seem to only be present when there's a forest to hide in. My battles as carthage in the deserts have no capture points. That seems to support my view that capture points have to be present since the introduction of line of sight mechanics.

Edit: Doh, that doesn't seem to be the case, tested it with Iceni and had no flag in open field battle that had woods nearby.

Also noticed that I had a flag as cathage when my siege was attacked. Is flag present when defending siege no matter how is behind the wall? I am getting confused now.
